Building Pathways Of Possibility From Criminal Justice To College: College Initiative As A Catalyst Linking Individual And Systemic Change, Susan P. Sturm, Kate Skolnick, Tina Wu Jan 2011

Building Pathways Of Possibility From Criminal Justice To College: College Initiative As A Catalyst Linking Individual And Systemic Change, Susan P. Sturm, Kate Skolnick, Tina Wu

Faculty Scholarship

Across the United States, communities, especially marginalized and low income communities, face challenges resulting from the “school-to-prison pipeline”—a continuum of conditions increasing the probability that people from such marginalized communities, particularly black men, will find themselves in prison rather than college.1 Dismantling this pipeline has become a significant national focus of advocates and policy makers. In New York City, a network has emerged in the last ten years to focus on building a new pipeline from criminal justice to college. This network focuses on rebuilding the lives of the over 70 thousand people who have fallen into the school-to-prison pipeline. …

Faculty Scholarship

The Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program is a model for substantially increasing the number of underrepresented minority students earning doctoral degrees in the physical sciences. The program presently leads the nation in master’s degrees in physics for African-Americans, and is one of the top ten producers of physics master’s degrees among all U.S. citizens. The program is on pace to become the nation’s top producer of underrepresented minority Ph.Ds. in physics, astronomy, and materials science. We summarize the main features of the program, including two of its core strategies: Partnering a minority-serving institution and a major research university through collaborative research, …

Yoga In Higher Education: North American Educators And The Use Of Yoga As Pedagogy: A Dissertation, Laura Douglass Jan 2011

Yoga In Higher Education: North American Educators And The Use Of Yoga As Pedagogy: A Dissertation, Laura Douglass

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study used eighteen interviews and a self-administered online questionnaire (n=117) to examine the use of yoga as pedagogy in undergraduate and graduate level classrooms in North America. The results of this study suggest that educators define yoga in three distinct ways: as a modern postural practice (eight interview participants), a philosophical orientation (seven interview participants) and a New Age orientation (three interview participants). The data from this research indicates that educators who view yoga as a modern postural practice and a philosophical orientation were highly committed to maintaining the following characteristics of higher education: secularism, the biomedical model, and …

Negotiating Social Mobility And Critical Citizenship: Institutions At A Crossroads, Michelle D. Deardorff, Angela Mae Kupenda Jan 2011

Negotiating Social Mobility And Critical Citizenship: Institutions At A Crossroads, Michelle D. Deardorff, Angela Mae Kupenda

Journal Articles

A Black law professor who teaches at a predominantly White law school and a White public law professor who teaches at a historically Black university in the same southern, urban community are co-authors of this Article. Here, in this piece, we explore the tension between the goals of our institutions and many other institutions to improve the socioeconomic status of our students with our personal goals of preparing students to challenge societal injustice and to be critical citizens who are willing to challenge a government that engages in abusive actions or is exploitative of its citizenry.

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick Jan 2011

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Unlike current assessment protocols, which emphasize prediction and control—often at the expense of engagement with the unknown, emergent, and new—we explore here our experiences as professors opening to surprise, in pedagogical interactions that have unpredictable outcomes. We imagine and advocate for institutional structures that, rather than predetermining goals and measuring how well we have achieved them, necessitate surprise and strengthen us to respond creatively and liberally to it. Without room for surprise, we argue, education is denied, and distorted by the loss of, one of its central energies: the circulation of the gifts of chance and serendipity.

Exploring The Population Dynamics Of Wintering Bald Eagles Through Long-Term Data, Julie Beckstead, Alexandra N. Lagasse, Scott R. Robinson

Biology Faculty Scholarship

THE ECOLOGICAL QUESTION

How does a bald eagle population change over time at a winter migratory stopover and which factors influence its abundance?

ECOLOGICAL CONTENT

Bald eagle biology, conservation biology, endangered species, population ecology, and migration ecology (stopover)

WHAT STUDENTS DO

Guided Approach: Students will generate questions about bald eagle numbers influenced by weather and food availability. Students will then use graphing software (JMP or Excel) to compile the data in a graphical form to answer their questions.

Open-ended Approach: Students will generate their own hypotheses of interest from the larger bald eagle data set. This approach is encouraged for …

Testing The Influence Of Counselors' Self-Disclosure In Career Counseling : Does The Content Of The Disclosure Matter?, Kerrin A. Sendrowitz Jan 2011

Testing The Influence Of Counselors' Self-Disclosure In Career Counseling : Does The Content Of The Disclosure Matter?, Kerrin A. Sendrowitz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which counselor self-disclosure influenced the process and outcome of career counseling. The investigation was a one-session field intervention that used an experimental between-groups design, in which clients were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) coping-mastery self-disclosure: the career counselor disclosed having personally experienced a similar career-related challenge and described how he or she overcame that challenge, (2) similarity self-disclosure: the career counselor disclosed having personally experienced a similar career-related challenge, without describing how he or she overcame the challenge, and (3) no self-disclosure. The dependent variables were …

Grading Participation In College Courses : Instructor Attitudes And Practices, Susan L. Rogers Jan 2011

Grading Participation In College Courses : Instructor Attitudes And Practices, Susan L. Rogers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

An exploratory study was launched to redress a gap in the literature that is expressed as an assumption that "most" college instructors grade participation in undergraduate courses. A sample of 521 instructors at a large, northeastern public university was surveyed to assess their attitudes and practices in grading participation in undergraduate courses of 50 students or less. A survey instrument was developed for the purpose of this study and subjected to principal components analysis, and this instrument yielded 7 subscales of acceptable reliability (Cronbach's alpha ≥ .70). Results suggest that the majority of instructors across disciplines incorporate a "participation" factor …

Academic Advising Models In Faith-Based Colleges And Universities, Roger D. Wessel, Jenni L. Smith

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This study examined how academic advising is conducted among private, faith-based colleges and universities. In addition to developing a profile of academic advising at these campuses, academic advising organizational models used by these institutions were examined. Academic advising responsibilities at these institutions incorporated prescriptive and developmental advising methods. Seventy percent of the institutions utilized the “Faculty-Only” advising model. Benefits of using faculty members as advisors include the emphasis that private colleges place on faculty-student contact, enabling students to have a deeper relationship with their professors. Negative implications when utilizing faculty advisors include that they have other job responsibilities and priorities …

Themes that emerged were (a) shame, (b) (c) fear, (d) ambivalence, (e) ignorance, (f ) lack of sexual subjectivity and agency, (g) presence of sexual subjectivity and agency, (h) same-sex attraction, (i) female sexuality as God-given and natural, and (j) the importance of open dialogue …
