Saving For Post-Secondary Education In Individual Development Accounts, Min Zhan, Mark Schreiner Sep 2005

Saving For Post-Secondary Education In Individual Development Accounts, Min Zhan, Mark Schreiner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Low-income people have less access to opportunities for post-secondary education, and the welfare reform in 1996 further limited access for welfare recipients. Since welfare reform, there has been an increasing interest in strategies meant to enhance the well-being of low-income people through education and the development of human capital. In this study, we examine how low-income people saved for post-secondary education in Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) in a nationwide demonstration. IDAs provide matches for savings used primarily for home purchase, microenterprise, and post-secondary education. We examine how savings outcomes differed between participants who intended to use their savings for post-secondary …

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Academic rigor is a topic that elicits some rather strong feelings. I've heard students complain that the courses they are taking are too easy and that we don't demand enough of them. Those students want more rigor in their courses. I've heard faculty complain that students are poorly prepared, have distressingly short attention-spans, and seem to be more interested in parties than in studying. Those faculty don't think that students want or will tolerate increased academic rigor. I've heard parents demand that we refund their money for a course because their child didn't really learn anything and that faculty are …

Temple: The Story Of An Urban University, Eric G. Lovik

Essays in Education

This article provides a brief history of the formation of Temple College in the late 19th century and its official recognition as a university during the early years of the 20th century. The institution evolved from very humble origins of private tutoring sessions in a Baptist pastor’s office. In only a few decades, the institution attracted faculty with reputable academic credentials, offered undergraduate degrees in practical and scholarly fields, and provided graduate and professional education to men and women of the working class, various racial and national heritages, and wealthy families. Despite numerous obstacles, Temple’s founder, Russell Conwell, turned his …

Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price Sep 2005

Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform had the unforeseen effect of causing large numbers of public assistance recipients to drop out of college, discouraging their pursuit and acquisition of postsecondary education (PSE) credentials. There is a growing body of research that shows the value of postsecondary education in getting public assistance recipients onto a path toward occupational and social mobility. The restrictions of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families PSE policy, coupled with the recognition that college participation should be an option for qualified welfare recipients, influenced the emergence of many successful state and county-level movements focused on reforming welfare reform PSE policy. Their work …

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews Sep 2005

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.

Academic Rigor: A Critical Analysis, Dennis Clayson Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: A Critical Analysis, Dennis Clayson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

There is a segment in the movie "Bedazzled" which appears pertinent to the present discussion. The scene is inside a classroom. A table is covered with a stack of red apples, indicating the popularity of the teacher and perhaps symbolizing forbidden fruit. Actress Elizabeth Hurley, wearing a short skirt and tight sweater, is teaching in front of a classroom full of young men. She walks to a blackboard where tomorrow's homework assignments are written. "OK boys, tonight's homework. Algebra: XN + YN = ZN, but you are never going to use that, are you?" She erases …

Academic Rigor: A Baby Boomer’S Perspective, Deb Bloom Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: A Baby Boomer’S Perspective, Deb Bloom

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Living in a world that equates faster with better, maximum output with quality, and multitasking with accomplishment, is it any wonder that students today are confused about what is required of them in a rigorous academic program? As education has evolved over the past several decades, we have seen a transition from valuing a broad liberal arts education as adequate preparation for life to a focus on career preparation. Large numbers of baby boom generation students graduating from college in the 1960s and '70s assured that their college education would open new worlds for them, frequently discovered a degree in …

A Review By Jesse G. Swan Of Lessons Of The Masters, By George Steiner, Jesse Swan Sep 2005

A Review By Jesse G. Swan Of Lessons Of The Masters, By George Steiner, Jesse Swan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Lessons of the Masters, George Steiner's published version of the Charles Eliot Norton lectures he gave in 2001-2002, is to be a lesson in the value of conceptualizing, fostering, and admiring highly idiosyncratic individuals engaged in teaching, be it teaching live, present persons or future, absent generations. The theme and style are familiar, as is the abiding sense of nostalgia and impending elegy: "Having taught for half a century, and in numerous countries and systems of higher education," Steiner announces in the first sentence of these melancholic reflections, "I have found myself increasingly uncertain as to the legitimacy, as …
