The Political Value Of Knowledge And The Elite Schools' Curricula: To Ignore Or Not To Ignore Marxism?, Dana Neacsu Jan 2005

The Political Value Of Knowledge And The Elite Schools' Curricula: To Ignore Or Not To Ignore Marxism?, Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the content of elite law schools' curricula. Like all such debates, this one also reflects the author's political and social concerns, which at this time are questioning the impact such curricula have on the graduates' abilities to deliberate "upon the full range of issues which might appear directly or indirectly on a less impoverished [contemporary] political agenda." Elite law schools, which are usually associated with elite universities, are expected to offer liberal legal education. Elite law schools are the fountain of legal scholarship. They are also the place where many of this nation's leaders acquire both …

Engaged And Engaging Science: A Component Of A Good Liberal Education, Judith A. Ramaley, Rosemary R. Haggett

Higher Education

We live in a period of rapid and complex socioeconomic change. The forces driving this change are reshaping the educational landscape in ways that we are only beginning to understand. Many recent reports and books, including the 2002 report from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College, have explored the implications of these changes and have identified growing gaps between the intentions and assumptions of faculty, the actual experiences of students, and the demands of the workplace. The lack of clarity of purpose in undergraduate education …

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well Being And College Adjustment For Freshmen At A Southeastern University, Robert E. Ratliff

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The purpose of this study was to identify the possible relationship between spiritual well being and college adjustment in first-year college students. The Spiritual Well Being Scale and the College Adjustment Scales were administered. Relational analysis was used to investigate 91 college freshmen enrolled in a freshman seminar course at Charleston Southern University, Charleston, South Carolina. This relational analysis included both psychological and developmental aspects of college adjustment in nine specific areas of college adjustment: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, academic problems, and career problems. Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes Jan 2005

Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

A model using moral judgment and cultural ideology (political and religious ideology) for predicting moral thinking about critical social and political issues, developed by Narvaez, Getz, Rest, and Thoma (1999), was assessed for utility with students at evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges. Freshmen (N = 199) and seniors (N = 230) from 2 evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges participated, completing the Defining Issues Test 2, Inventory of Religious Belief, and Attitudes Toward Human Rights Inventory. The regression model predicted a significant amount of variance for the students in this study; however, the R2 value (.22) was much smaller than …

Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Perceptions of student and professor competence and respect were investigated through a survey of 2042 students from 77 liberal arts colleges, both Christian and non-Christian. The Christian schools are part of the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities); CCCU responses were 78.5 percent of the total. Chi- Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine if gender and type of college affected students’ responses. Two conclusions can be made about student competence and value: (1) male CCCU students are most likely to believe that male students are viewed as more competent than female students and (2) non-CCCU students are …

Cooperative Learning In Higher Education: Comparison Of Hispanic And Non-Hispanic Graduate Student Reflections On Group Exams For Group Grades, Bobbette M. Morgan Jan 2005

Cooperative Learning In Higher Education: Comparison Of Hispanic And Non-Hispanic Graduate Student Reflections On Group Exams For Group Grades, Bobbette M. Morgan

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study is to share reflections from 202 non-Hispanic graduate students and 65 Hispanic students who have participated in cooperative written examinations for group grades. Reflections are clustered by themes identified from the students’ comments using Van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomonological approach which is how the direct statements of individuals describe a common shared experience add to the affective understanding of the event. The experience is examined and defined through reflections of the participants. Students experience positive interdependence within a cooperative learning setting. Results of 202 non-Hispanic graduate students and 65 Hispanic graduate students are compared.

The Transition From High School To College : A Single-Case Study, Margaret R. Hay

Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to use quantitative and qualitative data to describe the transition recent high-school graduates made to a small, rural community college. Both the students’ academic preparation and their own perceptions about their preparedness for college were described.

Stopping-Out Of College: The Students' Stories, Diane Simpson Webber

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study focuses on young adults under the age of 26 who enrolled in a 4-year college, left college, then later re-enrolled in either the same or a different college. The students stopped-out of college for various reasons. Purposeful sampling identified eight participants, mostly from New England, who were in different stages of the stopping-out process. Qualitative data was gathered through interviewing these participants. The purpose of this study is to construct stories from the students' words and interviewee observations as a way to better understand how students made meaning from their stopping-out experiences. An overview of retention missions and …
