Through A Mirror Dimly: Social Constructionism Through The Lens Of Faith, Amy Quillin

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Postmodernism has often been excoriated in Christian circles for its departure from commonly recognized principles of truth seeking. How can we, as educators, help students grapple wisely with this pervasive worldview in the context of encouraging a biblical and vibrant development of their faith? Are there components within postmodernism that might help inform students’ faith development? This article will examine social constructionism, a variant of postmodernism, from the lens of Christian faith and spirituality, and will attempt to answer some of those questions.

As the children of boomers move through education system, there is an increasing parental involvement in the college student's experience. This is the result of a combination of factors, including the increasingly higher cost of attendance, boomer parents' own experiences in higher education, societal trends to extend adolescence, and student issues today that can sometimes be life-threatening.

This inquiry was conducted to explore how the characteristics of our university’s religious mission are interwoven into our educational leadership doctoral program and are manifest in the structure and learning experiences that our students encounter. We examined how these characteristics might correspond to or relate to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards that resulted from national reform initiatives in educational leadership in the mid 1990s. We concluded that the foundations of the PhD program are built solidly on the distinctive characteristics and identity of our founders and are aligned with these professional standards as well. Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

Since the enactment of the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, there have been several additional attempts by Congress to address the problem of alcohol abuse on college campuses. In 1 990, Congress passed the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act containing a provision requiring institutions to notify students of the number of arrests for liquor law violations. In the 1998 Higher Education Amendments (HEA), Congress proposed a set of initiatives institutions should take "to change the culture of alcohol consumption on college campuses."
