Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians & Burnout (Conference Presentation), Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren Oct 2023

Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians & Burnout (Conference Presentation), Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

There is substantial research about sources of burnout among academic librarians; however, very little addresses the impact of the local environment. Responding to regional and institutional shifts while still trying to uphold the values of librarianship such as providing confidential and free access to information can quickly lead to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion, classic symptoms of burnout. A panel discussion was hosted at the Arkansas Library Association (ArLA) / Southeast Library Association (SELA) Joint Conference, on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Academic librarians from different Southern states discussed their local environments, their libraries’ responses to recent events, and their strategies …

Addressing The Complexities Of Creating An Inclusive Campus For Transgender People (Conference Paper), Jason D. Phillips, John William Blue, Kerrie Taber

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Making transgender people feel accepted into the campus community goes beyond educational programs to encourage inclusion. The process should also include many institutional facets from IT to housing. This paper examines the changes made or in the process of being addressed at a regional public university in Arkansas.

Disabling Injustice In The Higher Education Classroom, Daniel Eadens, Danielle Eadens, Christopher Lanterman Jan 2021

Disabling Injustice In The Higher Education Classroom, Daniel Eadens, Danielle Eadens, Christopher Lanterman

EGS Content

This chapter explores perspectives in higher education classrooms, specifically the need for social justice in education through inclusive and universal design/ universal design for learning (UD/UDL). The authors contacted colleagues regarding what worked to change paradigms and perspectives around issues of social justice and advocacy in classrooms. Three themes emerged, mirroring those of the literature reviewed: scholarly strategies, structured activities, and amplifying marginalized voices. The authors also discuss how accessible and inclusive approaches disable injustice and ableism in higher education classrooms by recognizing disability as an element of diversity and the need for inclusive approaches on college campuses and beyond. …

Offering Assessment Options Motivating Learners Through Multiple Mean.Docx, Danielle Eadens, Daniel Eadens

EGS Content

One of the tenets of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is that of Multiple Means of Action and Expression. Far too often, faculty in higher education enact principles of UDL for the singular purpose of accessibility for learners with disabilities rather than looking at it as a framework of inclusivity for all. It is integral faculty shift mindsets to one of inclusivity when it comes to persons with disabilities and unique learning needs, “Teachers need a mindset that shapes how they approach all students in the classroom” (Eadens and Eadens 2016, p. 253).

Supervision Matters For College Students: Relationships Between Employment Type And Student Outcomes., Daniel Eadens, Justin Hultman Jan 2020

Supervision Matters For College Students: Relationships Between Employment Type And Student Outcomes., Daniel Eadens, Justin Hultman

EGS Content

Although student persistence is an important metric for higher education administrators and working is pervasive among those who attend college, the extent to which work supervisors may impact students who work while attending college through interactions is underexplored. Thus, this study examines the relationship between supervisor interactions and student outcomes in relation to type of employment, academic persistence, and competencies. The literature review indicates the relationship between type of employment and academic persistence is important and interactions may provide useful benefits. However, interactions within the type of employment experience is lesser known. The study site for this research is Alpha …

Bridging The Skill Gap: Helping Non-Traditional Students Develop Research Skills When They Need It Most, Christina C. Wray, Renee C. Montgomery Mar 2019

Bridging The Skill Gap: Helping Non-Traditional Students Develop Research Skills When They Need It Most, Christina C. Wray, Renee C. Montgomery

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Many of the research skills needed to succeed in higher education are never explicitly taught. Most students learn through experience and exposure. However, working-class students don’t always grow up in academic environments that provide the same exposure to these skills. In fact, at the University of Central Florida one of every five of our students is the first in their family to attend college. Using the University of Central Florida’s “Research Tips Tuesdays” webinar series as a case study, participants in this session will explore ways to help working-class students develop fundamental research skills while respecting their busy schedules. We …

Educators are amongst a population at risk for exposure to secondary trauma because they have contact with young adults who may have or currently experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, relationship abuse, or financial insecurity. However, despite the vulnerability of educators to secondary trauma, little research has focused on this population or preventative techniques that might mitigate the effects of secondary trauma to educators. A faculty cohort was selected to identify levels of exposure and coping strategies used to navigate classroom and one and one interactions with students. In this presentation participants the results from this semester long faculty …

The Prestigious And The Predatory: Helping Online Students Navigate Open Education Source In A World Of "Fake News", Kathleen Hohenleitner Phd, James Campbell Phd, John Raible Ma Mar 2018

The Prestigious And The Predatory: Helping Online Students Navigate Open Education Source In A World Of "Fake News", Kathleen Hohenleitner Phd, James Campbell Phd, John Raible Ma

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Teaching early literature students to conduct research online poses a challenge when students encounter Open Education Resources. Some are predatory, published for profit, and not well vetted. Others are highly credible and perfectly appropriate for use in student essays. An instructional designer and two faculty members collaborated to design a module to help English literature students think critically about the online sources they find and how to best participate in the existing literary conversation.

Quality Leadership Matters: A Research-Based Survey Of Graduate Programming, Daniel Eadens, Carol Mullen Jan 2018

Quality Leadership Matters: A Research-Based Survey Of Graduate Programming, Daniel Eadens, Carol Mullen

EGS Content

This empirical study contributes to the dialogue about quality leadership and national trends involving standards-based program review. It is the first to utilize the 2016 Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards for graduate programs and separately from accreditation and sponsorship. The literature on quality leadership is reviewed, and results from an original instrument are described. Survey influences included leadership literature, the CAEP Standards, and the University Council for Educational Administration’s artifacts. Students and completers’ feedback was on program effectiveness, satisfaction, impact, and ethics. Variance was found in perceptions of quality, relevance, and learning. Contradictory beliefs of program …

Vicarious Trauma The Unseen Burden.Pptx, Lynell Hodge Jan 2017

Vicarious Trauma The Unseen Burden.Pptx, Lynell Hodge

EGS Content

What is vicarious trauma? Vicarious trauma is a response to the continued exposure to secondary traumatic content (Figely, 2002). The difference between burnout or compassion fatigue is they can be addressed with time off or rest; however, vicarious trauma needs to be handled through coping skills and stress management. If not addressed, vicarious trauma can have adverse impacts to a person’s cognition, self-perception, and empathetic engagement (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). Additionally, vicarious negatively impacts job satisfaction. The results of the study found for every increase in vicarious trauma, there was a decrease in job satisfaction. Vicarious trauma thus provides a …
