Changes In Student Engagement: The Relationship Between Place Of Residence, Gender And Engagement, Kendall J. Stanislav
Changes In Student Engagement: The Relationship Between Place Of Residence, Gender And Engagement, Kendall J. Stanislav
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The residential college campus model has been in existence in North America since the days of early Colonial America. Students living in dormitories and residence halls were the norm until the 1950s and 60s when students began to move off-campus. As this trend has continued research has examined the merits both of living on and off-campus and in general found that living on-campus is more closely associated with a wide range of positive outcomes, including engagement or involvement (Astin, 1984; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). Involvement theory states that the more time and effort invested in academically enhancing practices, the more …
A Phenomenological Study Of Female Faculty Transitional Experience Into Administration Within Cccu Member Institutions, Meleca Consultado
A Phenomenological Study Of Female Faculty Transitional Experience Into Administration Within Cccu Member Institutions, Meleca Consultado
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The number of women entering all levels of higher education is continuing to grow. However, there is a disparity between this fact and the number of women serving in senior leadership positions within higher education. This gap is even more evident within member institutions of the Christian Council of Colleges and Universities (CCCU). This study examined the experience of seven female CCCU administrators during their transitional period from faculty member to administrator. Five of the seven women transitioned into their current administrative position within the last five years, highlighting a rapid movement into leadership. This study also found that only …
The Experience Of Female Administrators At A Private, Kenyan University, Elizabeth Lyon
The Experience Of Female Administrators At A Private, Kenyan University, Elizabeth Lyon
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The ability of women to achieve leadership positions is often constricted in comparison to males, especially within higher education. Although these limitations exist as a global phenomenon, they are a reality specifically within African higher education (Arnfred & Afrikainstituet, 2004). Some women break through barriers such as cultural traditions and enter into leadership, but numbers remain uneven between male and female managers (Burn, 2005). Much can be learned from the experiences of the women who achieve managerial positions within higher education. Currently, literature exists on women serving in the public academic world, but little to no research exists on female …
Latino Students' Experiences In A Latin American Study Abroad Semester Program, Melissa S. Lima
Latino Students' Experiences In A Latin American Study Abroad Semester Program, Melissa S. Lima
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
As the Latino population increases in the United States, developing a better understanding of Latino students’ experiences within higher education benefits both the student population and those interacting with these students. Due to the limited research literature focused on the experiences of Latino students going abroad, the researcher aspired to contribute to the literature about Latino students. By using a phenomenological qualitative framework, the study intended to offer a deeper understanding of the study abroad experiences of Latino students. The study revealed that a community of learning, relationships, and the need to continue diversifying student groups impacted the identity develop …
The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the essence of college students’ engagement with theology. Theology is the foundation on which Christian beliefs are based, and many Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institutions affiliate themselves with core theological doctrines that influence how their institutions function. This study seeks to explore the theological experiences of eight college seniors attending three CCCU institutions. The guiding questions for this study were how do college students define theology and how do college students perceive the influence of theology on their day-to-day experience? Through photo elicitation and semi-structured interviews, four …
Social And Transitional Experiences Of Non-White Third Culture Kids At A Predominantly White Institution, Debby C. Cheruiyot Bii
Social And Transitional Experiences Of Non-White Third Culture Kids At A Predominantly White Institution, Debby C. Cheruiyot Bii
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this study was to look at the social and transitional experiences of non-white Third Culture Kids at a predominately white institution. Six non-white TCKs were interviewed using phenomenological qualitative methodology. Responses were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to discover the central themes. A variety of factors emerged as determinants to how these students experience college in a country outside of their home country. The findings present implications for individuals in higher education that interact with non-white TCKs. Recommendations for future research are also included.
Faith Integration Development: Faculty Conceptions Of Faith-Learning Integration, Brandon J. Jacob
Faith Integration Development: Faculty Conceptions Of Faith-Learning Integration, Brandon J. Jacob
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The integration of faith and learning (IFL) is the foundation upon which faith-based higher education has been built. As such, it imperative that educators at faith-based colleges and universities understand and implement this integration effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine how academic and student affairs educators conceptualize and practice the integration of faith and learning. The study also sought to identify key similarities and differences that exist between academic and student affairs educators regarding the integration of faith and learning. To answer these questions, a sample of nine academic educators and four student affairs educators were interviewed …
Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster
Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
The single best predictor of the success of university sponsored student development activities is the degree to which the students are engaged in these activities (Kuh, 2007). Sax (2008) observes though that much of our understanding of the impact of the college experience is based on the study of students in the aggregate, with relatively little work done on how the college environment differentially influences men and women. The present work investigated gender differences among Emerging Adults (ages 18- 29) (Arnett, 2000) in their engagement of university sponsored activities at a small faith based university located in Northern California. The …
