SoTL Commons Conference

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) has been developed by cross-disciplinary research
and practice-based teaching inquiries. The objective of this study is to investigate how a cross-
disciplinary project can increase student engagement and learning outcomes. The cross-disciplinary
project in this study is infusing data science into digital photography through data visualization using a
programming language, Python. It is important to choose a single shared subject to overlap across
disciplines. The shared subject is color as data of a digital image. Color is a crucial element of

A Negotiated Curriculum: Giving Students Choice And Voice, Brenda Thomas

SoTL Commons Conference

Implementing a negotiated curriculum entails sharing power with students by giving them the autonomy to make decisions of varying degrees about curriculum and pedagogical practices. It is a relational pedagogy that increases student agency and engagement, enhances inclusion and belonging, and models democratic dialogue. Teaching with students as partners rather than to students as objects holds transformational power for instructors as well as students. This session will explore the results of a 3-year research project that examined students’ engagement in learning during their participation in a negotiated curriculum. Session participants will hear how one faculty member implements this approach, reflect …

The Relationship Between Academic Advising And Students' Completion Of Corequisite Gateway Courses, Michael P. Moran

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This bivariate correlational quantitative study sought to determine how variables predicted students’ course outcomes in first-year English and mathematics courses within a corequisite learning support model. Course outcomes were defined dichotomously on a successful completion or unsuccessful completion basis. The participants of this study included those who initially attempted first-year English (n = 2,055) and mathematics (n = 2,843) course(s) in a corequisite learning support model for the first time between Fall 2018 and Spring 2022 and were assigned as advisees to the professional academic advisors in the centralized advising model. One emergent theme within contributing factors to participation was alignment with personal goals (74.7%), …
