The purpose of this study was to investigate reasons for establishment of the National War College, its interrelationship with other Senior Service Schools, and to assess why the multiple institutions continue to exist.;The study contained three hypotheses. First, the National War College was planned and developed to be the capstone of the nation's military educational system. It never achieved that position. Instead it has shared the summit of professional military education with the other four Senior Service Colleges. A Study Of Paid Faculty Consulting And The Policies Of Higher Educational Institutions In Virginia, Albert F. Stem

The purpose of this historical study was to ascertain several academic and administrative issues associated with regular faculty who engage in off-campus, paid consulting activities. Using data collected from five, public, higher educational institutions in Virginia, the author examined the academic profiles, motives, and consequences of consulting on the faculty, as well as the institutional policies governing paid consulting.;Thirty-one faculty members and five administrators from the Virginia institutions participated in an instrumented semistructured interview designed to gather information relative to faculty involvement as paid consultants in a centralized training and development program during the decade of the 1970's. The purpose of this study was to identify factors contributing to success, nonsuccess and, withdrawal of open admissions students at Virginia State University. The primary objective was to develop a means for predicting academic outcomes at the time of matriculation for each student in the open admissions program.;The students studied were entering freshmen who were underprepared to enter college. Ex post facto data used as predictors consisted of SAT scores, high school achievement, placement tests scores, and measures on student commitment, socioeconomic status, and student expectations regarding college life.;Using a total of 32 predictors and the criterion categories of successful …

Involvement, Social Class And Attrition In Higher Education : The Case Of The Stop Out, Terrence Scott Daugherty

This thesis tests the validity of three theories purporting to explain the attrition of stop outs -- why students interrupt their studies with the intent to return to school. Data were gathered at two schools, Portland State University and Reed College. Two theories, those of social class and involvement, were tested at each school as contending explanations of attrition by path analysis of parsimonious models derived by factor analysis. These theories were found to explain little of the variance of attendance pattern (less than 4.3 percent) at either school. No particular lines of causation could be demonstrated at either school. …
