Responses To Teacher Feedback On Errors Differ By Age And Gender, Sandra P. Clarkson, William (Bill) H. Williams Ph.D
Responses To Teacher Feedback On Errors Differ By Age And Gender, Sandra P. Clarkson, William (Bill) H. Williams Ph.D
Publications and Research
Many students enter Hunter College's developmental mathematics program committing errors (mis)learned years earlier. These errors typically persist into the adult years and it is important to correct them specifically; simply reteaching concepts is not sufficient. Furthermore, there is a strong correlation between completion rate and student perception of the instructor's concern. To address both factors, we developed and tested an instructional technique to see whether giving detailed feedback to students about their errors would facilitate progress through the course. We found that the use of the feedback method had a clear positive effect on women; while for men, complex age …

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout
Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout
ACMS Journal 2004
Chartres Cathedral is highly regarded as a magnificent Gothic structure including beautiful stained glass windows and striking sculptures. Mathematics, especially geometry, played a central role in the design of this cathedral. This paper explores that mathematics and how it contributes to the overall effectiveness of the design.
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
ACMS Journal 2004
The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

An Analysis Of Student Reaction To The Use Of Interactive Video And Hypermedia To Enhance Post-Secondary Biological Science Education, Paulette A. Church
An Analysis Of Student Reaction To The Use Of Interactive Video And Hypermedia To Enhance Post-Secondary Biological Science Education, Paulette A. Church
Graduate Research Papers
The perceived effect on student learning provided by interactive technology in the biological sciences has been studied on a small, private, two-year college campus. The first portion of the study was the perceived effectiveness of interactive video when used for class presentations for biological science majors. The second portion of the study evaluated five campus-produced interactive laserdisc tutorials designed for individual and group use for students taking a general introductory biology lab course.

One Hour Of Chemical Demonstrations, S. Solomon, M. Oliver-Hoyo, J. Tian, B. Brook
One Hour Of Chemical Demonstrations, S. Solomon, M. Oliver-Hoyo, J. Tian, B. Brook
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This article describes a diverse set of chemistry demonstrations especially selected to encourage student interaction and to be easily transported. The demonstrations may be presented at a level that can be tailored to any audience– from very young children to high school students planning careers in science. An ideal environment is a small classroom with 20-30 students where everyone can take part in the discussion. Once the chemicals are prepared, the collection of demonstrations takes about ten minutes to set-up, and one hour (or less) to perform. Very little is needed at the visiting site, no more than a table …
Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano
Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The computational, graphing, statistical and programming capabilities of today’s graphing calculators make it possible for teachers and students to explore aspects of functions and investigate real-world situations in ways that were previously inaccessible because of computational constraints. Many of the features of graphing calculators can be used to integrate topics from mathematics and science. Here we provide a few illustrations of activities that use the graphing, parametric graphing, regression, and recursion features of graphing calculators to study mathematics in science contexts.
Developing Mathematics Enrichment Workshops For Middle School Students: Philosophy And Sample Workshops, H. Keynes, A. Olson, K. Singer
Developing Mathematics Enrichment Workshops For Middle School Students: Philosophy And Sample Workshops, H. Keynes, A. Olson, K. Singer
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This paper describes our approach to organizing enrichment activities using advanced mathematics topics for diverse audiences of middle school students. We discuss our philosophy and approaches for the structure of these workshops, and then provide sample schedules and resource materials. The workshops cover activities on the following topics: Graphing Calculators; The Chaos Game; Statistical Sampling; CT Scans–the reconstruction problem; The Platonic and Archimedean solids; The Shape of Space; Symmetry; The Binary Number System and the game of NIM; Graph Theory: Proof by Counterexample.
A Qualitative Characterization Of An Introductory College Nonmajors Biology Laboratory, Cherin Ann Lee
A Qualitative Characterization Of An Introductory College Nonmajors Biology Laboratory, Cherin Ann Lee
Faculty Book Gallery
The nature of an undergraduate, nonmajors biology laboratory was investigated in this study. Student participants were enrolled in a general education biology laboratory course at the University of Northern Iowa. The researcher's purpose was to gain a characterization of the instructional format and laboratory activities experienced by students.
Interpretation of student and instructor responses enabled an insider's view of the biology laboratory. The laboratory period was consistently described by both students and instructors as having three parts, Beginning, Middle, and End, with the End being of special importance for conceptual development. The instructional format of the three instructors differed within …

Museum Studies Programs Are Not Prepared For The Ph.D., Hugh H. Genoways
Museum Studies Programs Are Not Prepared For The Ph.D., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information
This article represents a response to the Committee on Museum Professional Training’s (1995) inquiry about establishing a Ph.D. in museum studies. It is also a partial response to Alan Friedman’s call for a Ph.D. program in informal science education in Curator volume 38, number 4 and Samuel Taylor’s editorial note in the same issue saying that a broader program should be considered covering all public programs. I will address the larger field of museum studies primarily because the problems faced by all of these areas of study are very similar.
Implementation Of Inquiry-Based Freshman Chemistry Laboratories, Elizabeth Ann Maschewske
Implementation Of Inquiry-Based Freshman Chemistry Laboratories, Elizabeth Ann Maschewske
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to facilitate the implementation of inquiry-based chemistry curriculum devised by the College University Resource Institute (CURI) into the freshman chemistry labs at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) with the aim of retaining and enthusing chemistry students in general and women and minorities in particular. Pertinent educational research is reviewed and practical strategies are recommended for the process of curriculum implementation. A pilot laboratory section is taught incorporating as many of the recommendations as possible. Pilot labs study the process of implementation and look at student perceptions and academic achievement. An action plan is developed …
