Objectives: Recently, a malfunction of the autophagic pathway has been implicated with impaired glucose metabolism and progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. Further, an interconnection has been suggested between the autophagy and heat shock protein (HSP) systems. The aims of the present study were to investigate the effects of exercise and rapamycin treatment (RAPA) on the autophagic process and HSP in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from prediabetics compared to controls. BACKGROUND: Any discussion of health should involve a discussion of health literacy, as it is a critical factor in the acquisition and application of health-related information. One specific area is mental health literacy (MHL), which refers to knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders.

MHL has experienced improvement in the areas of recognition, management, and prevention; however, current efforts for MHL development and improvement have a one-sided focus. MHL efforts do not address the issue of stigma in terms of reduction or awareness setting the stage for the current research.

Skin cancer is an important topic in the United States due to the recent increase in cost and mortality. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if the early implementation of a multicomponent sun prevention program positively impacted kindergarten and first grade students’ knowledge and behavioral intentions to practice safe sun techniques after a one week period. Kotter’s Model of Change and the ACE Star model were utilized to guide this EBP project. Stair negotiation accounts for 16% of fall related traumatic spinal cord injuries and the vestibular system plays a crucial role in fall avoidance through its role in maintaining balance during human locomotion, but its role in stair negotiation is unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the vestibular contribution to a) stair negotiation versus locomotion and b) stair ascent to stair descent in healthy young participants. It was hypothesized that, with cadence held constant, vestibular influence would increase during stair negotiation when compared to locomotion. As concussion research shifts from diagnostic to managing return to play (RTF), many studies have sought to establish safe guidelines for recovery. Computer-based neuropsychological programs measure cognitive function performance typically affected by brain injury and include a self-report post-concussion symptoms scale. The use of the total score of a post-concussion symptoms scale as a possible predictor of protracted recovery in high school athletes following injury is still being researched. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a school-based cross-training program on body mass index (BMI), attitudes toward physical activity (ATPA), and physical activity (PA) levels of children in the 4^th and 5^th grades. Children (N = 118) were divided into control (n = 60) and experimental (n = 58) groups based on class availability. While the control group continued academic classes as usual, the experimental group participated in cross-training involving resistance training (RT), calisthenics, and stretching twice a week for 10 weeks. Consequently, school aged children are not meeting the recommended 150 mins/wk of physical activity. We studied the effects of Minds in Motion-MAZE on middle school aged (n=74) children’s balance and motor skills. Minds in Motion-MAZE is a low cost physical activity program designed to improve balance and motor control. Participants participated in Minds in Motion-MAZE for 15 minutes during the 7^th period. A multivariate test did not show a statistical significance of participating in Minds in Motion-MAZE and improved balance and motor skills. …

Because nutrition education does not receive much instructional time, students may not learn about proper nutrition, which may make it difficult to lead a healthy lifestyle as they get older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2014), during the 2011-2012 school year, 52% of districts required some type of skill-based nutrition education, while only 35% required a curriculum be provided for each grade level. The purpose of this quantitative study investigates the effect of a skating unit on factors of cardiovascular fitness, static balance, explosive power, and agility in fifth graders. Methods: During a 6-weeks skating unit (twelve lesson), seventy-one students (ages 10-12; M age = 10.34) participated during regularly scheduled physical education classes. Three separate classes served as control group (C) (n=19; 8 male; 11 female) and two experimental groups: roller skating (RS) (n=26; 11 male; 15 female) and inline skating (IS) (n=26; 10 male; 16 female). Predictor variables, institution type and annual allocated revenue, were investigated as potential predictors of success in NCAA Division II Athletic Departments, on the outcome variable (points scored in the Learfield sports-NACDA Directors’ Cup), working through mediating variables representing culture type (clan, adhocracy, market, and hierarchy). Data were collected through an electronic survey emailed to all NCAA Division II institution athletic directors and head coaches.
