This has been IMSA's work since we opened in 1986. Now, in our 15th Anniversary year, we are ready to further expand our statewide programming and to more proactively share what we have learned about what works in the field of mathematics, science and technology teaching and learning. The time is right, the needs are great, and the stakes for public education have never been higher.

Searching for the secrets in the heart of the atom, or in the genetic code that makes each of us unique, IMSA's African-American and Hispanic alumni are extending the frontiers of science. They are achieving and contributing in many fields, engineering Illinois products, researching disease, teaching Illinois students, and improving Illinois technology.

The vignettes give an extended look at several alumni, and the snapshots give a glimpse of more. Here our underrepresented alumni tell how IMSA prepared them for academic and personal life, and gave them opportunities to develop tools for success.

Searching for a cure for cancer in the heart of a cell, analyzing the ecology of Illinois tall grass prairies, engineering Illinois products to precise specifications, or volunteering to help others, IMSA graduates contribute in myriad ways.

The vignettes offer an in-depth look at several graduates, and the snapshots provide some more glimpses. Women tell how the IMSA experience enabled them to develop confidence to meet academic and personal challenges, succeed in a rigorous academic environment, and grow with the many opportunities IMSA made available.

Recent IMSA graduate Keith Winstein of Oak Park spent part of his summer doing something quite unconventional for an 18-year-old.

Winstein was the only student in a group of 11 official United States delegates to attend the first World Conference on Science (WCS) in Budapest, Hungary, from June 26 to July 1. The conference brought together 2,500 scientists from 150 countries.

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. To "bring the best minds in the world to IMSA," the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy launched its Great Minds Program in the Fall of 1998. Leading the program is Nobel Laureate Dr. Leon Lederman, a "founding father of IMSA."

This story is the first in a series to appear in upcoming NOVAs, charting the development of the program and its impact on IMSA students and staff, and other students and teachers in Illinois.

In 1986, Leon Lederman helped establish the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, one of the nation's first residential secondary schools created specifically for gifted students in the sciences. "Kids hate to be different," Lederman recognizes, "and very bright kids know they're different when they're in normal schools, and they react to that differentness in many different ways. On June 11,1990, following a year of community discussions, extensive research and intensive planning, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy unveiled a revolutionary strategic plan for its future. The plan, which received unanimous support from the board of trustees, included strategies in ten areas: curriculum; assessment of student achievement; teaching; business, research and educational partnerships; recruitment and support of a diverse student population; private sector funding; marketing/communications; integration of academic and residential life; organizational structure; and personal and professional growth for faculty and staff.

Leon N. Lederman, Illinois' first science adviser, worries about "the glaze." It coats the eyes of politicians when scientific subjects come up. The glaze might not be so important if it weren't for the fact that crucial policy issues involving science and technology are everywhere: global climate change, solid waste disposal, high-speed rail transit and stimulation of the advanced technology industry — to name just a few.
