Examining School Belonging And Academic Resilience Among Biliterate And Multilingual High School Students, Keila Moreno Navarrete

Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of students in the United States identify as Hispanic or Latino/a. These students enter American classrooms from varying backgrounds with diverse talents. Many of these students are proficient in at least two languages. Unfortunately, Hispanic students are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs, nationwide. The present study contributes to the limited empirical research on talented, biliterate, Hispanic, first-generation, and second-generation immigrant students by investigating strength-based factors (i.e., academic resilience, biliteracy, and school belonging) using both quantitative and qualitative evidence. Quantitative data from 30 bilingual Hispanic high school students were collected through an online survey with items measuring …

Towards Critical Reflexivity In Gifted Education Teacher Preparation, Inna Kruvi Nov 2023

Towards Critical Reflexivity In Gifted Education Teacher Preparation, Inna Kruvi

Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the emergence of gifted education in the United States in the beginning of the twentieth century, the concept of giftedness has been used to marginalize, segregate, and exclude students of particular backgrounds from specialized academic programs. Among the factors that contribute to unequal access to gifted education for ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse (ECLED) students, teacher bias, deficit thinking, and insufficient teacher preparation have been identified as especially significant (Coleman et al., 2015; DeWet & Gubbins, 2011; Mansfield, 2015). Among various approaches to mitigate underrepresentation of ECLED students, the concept of cultural humility (Tervalon and Murray-Garcia, 1998) …

A Community Cultural Wealth Perspective: Black And Latino Families' Experiences In Nyc Gifted Programs, Jennifer Cosme Oct 2021

A Community Cultural Wealth Perspective: Black And Latino Families' Experiences In Nyc Gifted Programs, Jennifer Cosme

Theses and Dissertations

Black and Latino K-12 students are largely underrepresented and underperform on standardized assessments in gifted programs compared to their White and Asian peers. The reasons for these differences in recruitment and retention of Black and Latino K-12 students have been attributed to a culturally biased admissions process and the lack of a culturally responsive curriculum framework for students of color. Nevertheless, a small minority of Black and Latino students are successful in K-12 gifted programs. Yet, little is understood about the factors that account for their success and the degree to which families are involved in their child’s success. Using …

Attitudes Of Advanced Placement Teachers Toward Debate: Meeting The 21st Century Critical-Thinking Needs Of Gifted Secondary Students, Allison Mcmath Mcmath

Theses and Dissertations

Young Americans must be equipped, both individually and collectively, with the 21st century skills, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, in order to thrive in the global landscape which lies before them. Little political or economic capital is devoted to maximizing academic opportunities for gifted secondary learners. Limiting opportunities for children and youth with the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment, deprives them of their right to an appropriate education and wastes a national resource. Recognizing that limited capital often circumscribes schools in their ability to provide special programs, the researcher proffers debate, a course within the …

The Academic And Social Implications Of Virtual Learning Environments For Gifted High School Students With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lorna Elizabeth Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

In public schools today, students who are identified as individuals with gifts and talents are generally confronted with education that is not fitted to their learning needs and self-regulatory potentials (Colangelo, Assouline, & Gross, 2004). The mismatch between needs and services is particularly true of those students who, in addition to their giftedness, are faced with the challenges of a developmental disability such as autism or Asperger's Syndrome. In the face of such challenges to appropriate services for twice-exceptional students, a new approach to public education is attracting an increasing amount of attention. The term twice-exceptional was coined by James …

The Effects Of Peer Coaching On The Evaluation Knowledge, Skills, And Concerns Of Gifted Program Administrators, Alicia Ervin Cotabish

Improving practice in the evaluation of gifted programs is often hampered by insufficient training among gifted program administrators, a lack of release time for carrying out evaluations, and a failure to devote sufficient resources to evaluation efforts. To increase knowledge and skills in program evaluation, a peer coaching intervention provided one-on-one professional development to gifted program administrators. This study examined the effects of peer coaching on program administrators' evaluation knowledge and skills, with a particular focus on increased access for culturally diverse and low-income gifted learners to program services. Gifted program administrators' concerns about implementing more rigorous program evaluations were …
