Although online education is praised for convenience, a stigma still remains about its quality. Constant comparisons to traditional methods coupled with a popular belief that online education is ”easier” continue to denigrate online learning to an inferior alternative. Online education and the technology behind it are innovative but their relative immaturity has limited most of the research to an institutional perspective. This exploratory study examines the student perspective of online education in terms of personal satisfaction and frustration by interviewing eight students with online education experience and analyzing their perceptions using existing computer mediated communication theories. The purpose of this project was designed to give students and their family's additional support in language arts through a technologically facilitated means to review the skills and strategies that are covered in one theme of the first grade Houghton Mifflin Reading Program. This project provides this additional instruction via a DVD which models ways for the students to practice spelling, practice sight words, reinforce the grammar shills of nouns and verbs and review definitions of vocabulary words.

Engineering education delivery is dynamic and increasingly asynchronous. An observation that students had very different levels of knowledge and skills as they progressed through our programs, led the authors to use audio/visual media as a leveling intervention. In this effort the authors collected data to determine if audio/visual media can be used to increase performance in the development of a program related task and guide students to higher levels of learning on Blooms Taxonomy through the development of student created learning aids.

A Comparison Of Online And Face-To-Face Discussions In An Elementary Mathematics Methods Course, Julie Stephens James

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine if there is a difference between online and face-to-face discussions in terms of quality of responses. The researcher analyzed discussions among teacher candidates enrolled in a web-enhanced undergraduate elementary mathematics methods course. Data was collected through surveys, audio-recordings of face-to-face discussions and asynchronous discussion board transcripts. Transcripts from online and face-to-face discussions were analyzed for evidence of critical thinking using the practical inquiry model (Garrison, Anderson & Archer, 2001). The researcher found that discussions that utilized the asynchronous discussion board elicited more critical thinking from participants than face-to-face discussions. Also, the …

The institutional decision about how much technology should be used to scale distance education enrollments, reduce costs, maximize profits, and protect course and program quality is both institutional specific and complex. Guri-Rosenblit (1999) noted that “many conventional universities worldwide operate as large-scale universities and are in a continuous search to find the right balance between massification trends, quality education, and the catering to the individual needs of students” (p. 289). This research is an outgrowth of the authors’ own efforts to identify relevant scalability factors and their interrelationship one to another in a traditional university’s distance education program.

I first met Scott Howell in 2005 in Jekyll Island, Georgia at the annual Distance Learning Administration (DLA) conference, which was sponsored in part by the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration (OJDLA). Scott is co-editor of the three-volume book series Online Assessment and Measurement (2005) published by IDEA group and is this year's chair of the University Continuing Education Association's (UCEA) Distance Learning Community of Practice (DLCoP). The article discusses technological literacy in the U.S. The author focuses on the history of studying technology within general education and notes the scarcity of technology education requirements in American schools. He examines the impact of various studies conducted by the Standards for Technological Literacy (STL) and the National Research Council (NRC), among others, on technological literacy. The author compares the seventeen processes of researcher Harold Halfin's technological research to the theories outlined in various STL material, including observation, analysis, and visualization.

Increasing use of computers in schools has led to a mis-alignment between the way some students develop skill and knowledge and how they are tested. This paper reviews past research that demonstrates that paper-based tests that require students to produce written responses underestimate the achievement of students who are accustomed to writing on computer. The paper then explores how learning that occurs through other instructional uses of computers is not adequately captured by current testing practices. The paper argues that new approaches should be explored to better measure student learning.

The study investigates how four school districts in Arkansas maximized their E-rate discounts and leveraged their acquired E-rate services toward educational improvements. The purpose is to provide a common characteristic profile of school districts that leveraged their E-rate discounts toward effective technology integration. The findings contribute to an increased understanding of how schools benefit from the discounts produced by E-rate. In addition, these implications can be utilized by other school districts for an increased understanding of effective E-rate application strategies and technology integration efforts. Asynchronous distance education telecourses are the technological version of traditional correspondence courses. Students in asynchronous telecourses receive videos and printed material but they may not have any contact with the instructor or other students. This study analyzed the academic performance of 154 Southwest Virginia Community College students enrolled in 27 different telecourses during one semester. The purpose of this study was to determine if students' cognitive styles impacted their achievement in distance education courses. The purpose of this study was to assess and describB the conditions and practices in the Bethel School District's elementary schools with regard to the use of a multimedia approach to instruction. A sample of the 260 classroom teachers, 13 principals, and 13 learning resource center specialists in the Bethel School District's 13 elementary schools (K-6) were surveyed using questionnaires covering the implementation of multimedia methods of instruction. The results showed current multimedia methods of instruction are rare in the elementary classrooms of the Bethel School District because of a lack of technological inservice and current multimedia hardware.

Student progress toward an educational goal can be enhanced by the use of a curriculum containing both assessment and instruction. This project is such a curriculum based on the linear measurement items of the Brigance Inventory of Essential Skills. The careful sequencing and prevocational nature of this curriculum, along with its record-keeping forms, make it especially useful for special education. It is also available as a data disk for use with Apple microcomputers.

In the past six years, U.S. business schools have greatly expanded their use of computers in teaching and research. In 1966, only 11 percent of the business schools required student proficiency in programming; by 1970, the total had risen to 62 percent and is undoubtedly higher today. In 1971, the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at Stanford acquired a dedicated time-sharing system to replace the time-sharing services provided by the Stanford Computation Center (SCC).
