The Effects Of Mini-Lectures On Students’ Academic Achievement In An Adaptive E-Learning Environment: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Antonella Scarpiello
The Effects Of Mini-Lectures On Students’ Academic Achievement In An Adaptive E-Learning Environment: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Antonella Scarpiello
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This mixed-methods case study examines the effects of adaptive e-learning approaches focused on the connection between instructional material, structured as mini-lectures learned by following adaptive e-learning pathways, and student academic achievement. Specifically, it analyzes mini-video lectures' effectiveness in helping students understand challenging concepts and improve their overall performance. This study demonstrates that the interactive and student-controlled nature of mini-videos, embedded in an adaptive platform, provides students with personalized learning that places them at the center of their educational experience and significantly improves their classroom performance. The quantitative outcomes reveal that students have positively responded to adaptive e-learning strategies and activities …
The Impact Of An Immersive Virtual Reality Learning Environment With Computer-Aided Design And Three-Dimensional Modeling Through Stem Middle-School Education Programming, Danielle Eve Schneider
The Impact Of An Immersive Virtual Reality Learning Environment With Computer-Aided Design And Three-Dimensional Modeling Through Stem Middle-School Education Programming, Danielle Eve Schneider
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Immersive virtual reality as a tool in the middle-school classroom is a promising avenue to aid in cognitively challenging tasks requiring access to visual processes. As these tools become ever present in society, the expectation of school districts to include them into classroom curricula has become challenging, as there is inconsistent data connecting to beneficial learning outcomes. Middle-School STEM classrooms experience an exceptional challenge in the expectation to build strong spatial reasoning skills on rudimentary geometry concepts. It is with that in mind that many 21st-century technology classrooms turn to immersive virtual reality, such as Oculus Rift, as a tool …
Influence Of Online Professional Learning Networks On Teacher Self-Efficacy For Using Information Communication Technology, Jeremy A. O'Toole
Influence Of Online Professional Learning Networks On Teacher Self-Efficacy For Using Information Communication Technology, Jeremy A. O'Toole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Information communication technology (ICT) is increasingly used to enhance teaching and learning, but many teachers lack mastery-level experiences using these computing technologies in the classroom. To further their knowledge, some teachers have turned to online professional learning networks (PLNs) for development, but further research is needed to explore how and why these networks change teachers’ practice. Framed by Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy, the purpose of this study was to explore the influence of online PLNs on teachers’ perceptions of their technological self-efficacy for implementing ICT in the classroom. The research question of this basic qualitative study with interviews addressed …
Trinidad And Tobago Secondary School Principals' Perspectives Of Implementing A Laptop Initiative, Vida Iante Martin
Trinidad And Tobago Secondary School Principals' Perspectives Of Implementing A Laptop Initiative, Vida Iante Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The eConnect and Learn (eCAL) program was a government-led, one laptop per child initiative launched in the country of Trinidad and Tobago. However, after investing large sums of money in the program, the initiative was abandoned as unsuccessful. Addressing this problem, the study aimed to explore which factors affected the implementation of the eCAL initiative. The conceptual framework for this basic qualitative study was Hall and Hord’s six functions of change facilitators for effective implementation of change. The research question addressed the factors affecting the eCAL initiative from principals’ perspective. Interview data were collected from three secondary school principals via …

Swot Analysis Of The Role Of Open Educational Resources In Future Education With Special Reference To Open University Library And Librarian, Nisha G. Maharaj Ms., Ami U. Upadhyay Prof.(Dr), Mayank J. Trivadi Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Recent years have seen an immense increase in the digitization of research libraries and institutions especially of higher educational Institutes as well as higher learning. The reason for the same witnessed are E-Learning allows for more efficient learning at a lower cost, as well as expanded worldwide access to learning and explicit accountability for all participants in the learning process. The usage of Open Educational Resources (OER) in modern Indian higher education is playing an increasingly important role in improving the quality of education in both developed and developing nations. The goal of OER is to make this information freely …
Voice As A Tool For Learning: Using Personal Narratives To Eliminate Boundaries, Alexandra Reyes
Voice As A Tool For Learning: Using Personal Narratives To Eliminate Boundaries, Alexandra Reyes
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Presentations (1999-2023)
In educational linguistics, educators rely on social interactions and real-world experiences to inform pedagogical practice. Such hands-on learning opportunities are not always accessible to students, due to a variety of external factors. Narratives have long been used as tools for teaching and learning in various contexts, particularly when field experiences are unavailable or unfeasible. Personal narratives can be especially powerful, as they provide insight to others’ lived experiences and transcend cultural, geographic, historical, generational, and linguistic worlds. In this presentation I explore the use of written and video personal narratives as a meaningful supplement to (and potential substitute for) field …

Use Of A Webinar To Assess Fieldwork Educator Readiness To Provide Occupational Therapy Services And Supervise Students Through Telehealth, Jennifer A. Calabrese, Jeanne M. Coviello, Anna Y. Grasso, Kelly A. Otchet, Erica A. Pugh, Mary Beth Thomas, Bridget Trivinia
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, many school-based occupational therapy practitioners experienced intensified job demands including a rapid shift to telehealth service delivery. Additionally, academic fieldwork coordinators sought to find effective methods of delivering fieldwork education and supporting those involved, including the occupational therapy fieldwork educators and students, as they navigated the new context imposed by the pandemic. A study was completed using a synchronous webinar format and post-webinar survey to explore school-based occupational therapy practitioners’ perceptions of readiness to provide occupational therapy services through telehealth, the perception of preparedness of potential, current, and …

Creating Greater Awareness Of The Australian Professional Standards For Teachers In Initial Teacher Education, Melissa Cain, Chris Campbell
Creating Greater Awareness Of The Australian Professional Standards For Teachers In Initial Teacher Education, Melissa Cain, Chris Campbell
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Throughout their initial teacher education training in Australia, students are informed about the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and the necessity of gathering evidence to achieve these for teacher registration. Whilst the use of digital technologies as tools for reflection has become increasingly popular, there remains a paucity of research around the types of digital technologies that students use to document their ability to achieve accreditation requirements. This study presents details of how PebblePad, a specialised ePortfolio platform, can assist teacher education students to gain increased awareness about the 37 APST descriptors through the use of tagging. Results demonstrate …
How Constructivist Theories Of Development Can Be Used To Re-Conceptualise Naplan As An Opportunity To Develop Student Resilience, Robert M. Vanderburg, Paul Trotter
How Constructivist Theories Of Development Can Be Used To Re-Conceptualise Naplan As An Opportunity To Develop Student Resilience, Robert M. Vanderburg, Paul Trotter
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Teachers have come under increased pressure to improve educational outcomes as Australia has sought to meet the challenges of competing on an international level. This intensified pressure has been accompanied by improved levels of funding, a National Curriculum for all Australian states, and territories, along with assessments to measure these key outcomes. However, this increased level of scrutiny has affected the pedagogical choices of teachers. Traditional modes of instruction have been reinforced, with teachers moving away from effective constructivist approaches to learning. This article will propose that a reinterpretation of constructivist theories of development is needed to arrest this decline, …

Rapid Transition Of A Technical Course From Face-To-Face To Online, Swapna Gottipatti, Venky Shankaraman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Just like most universities around the world, the senior management at Singapore Management University decided to move all courses to a virtual, online, synchronous mode, giving instructors a very short notice period—one week—to make this transition. In this paper, we describe the challenges, practical solutions adopted, and the lessons learnt in rapidly transitioning a face-to-face Master’s degree course in Text Analytics and Applications into a virtual, online, course format that could deliver a quality learning experience.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty at a Hispanic serving institution shifted from face-to-face to totally online teaching. The authors describe two assignments for teacher candidates that required them to design and deliver lessons that focused on practicing two high-leverage practices utilizing Mursion, a mixed-reality simulation (MRS) software and platform. MRS sessions were delivered through Zoom video conferencing and were delivered asynchronously. Benefits, challenges, and limitations of using MRS in conjunction with Zoom in online courses were identified and discussed. Detailed logistics for planning, preparing, and executing MRS effectively were provided. The authors describe implications for remote learning …

The use of intelligent virtual agents in language learning has increased in recent years. Studies into several aspects of personalisation aiming to increase user engagement are an ongoing research topic with avatar personality being one such aspect. As a step towards our development of intelligent virtual avatars, we present two of our initial experiments to explore differences in user interaction with two contrasting avatar personalities -- P1: open-minded, friendly and sociable and P2: closed-off, curt and distant. Each user interacted with a single personality in a video-call setting and gave feedback on the interaction. Our expectations, that P1 would be …

Recent increases in the number of retractions of published papers reflect heightened attention and increased scrutiny in the scientific process motivated, in part, by the replication crisis. These trends motivate computational tools for understanding and assessment of the scholarly record. Here, we sketch the landscape of retracted papers in the Retraction Watch database, a collection of 19k records of published scholarly articles that have been retracted for various reasons (e.g., plagiarism, data error). Using metadata as well as features derived from full-text for a subset of retracted papers in the social and behavioral sciences, we develop a random forest classifier …

Blind Accessibility In College And University: Is Online Learning Accessible To All?, Erica R. Hagman
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Increasing technological advancement, coupled with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting social distancing orders, has amplified the push for online learning and hybrid courses like never before. As education moves online, are the necessary adjustments to accommodate students with varying levels of ability being made? One would think that online learning would be easier to navigate for Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) students, but is that truly the case? In this study I investigated if the Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, is accessible to BVI students. I hypothesized that BVI students would have more difficulty accessing classroom material …

Beyond Tickets And Comma Splices: Using Writing Center Coaching Techniques To Support Online Learners, Lisa Mcneal, Jennifer P. Gray

Many college students struggle with technical difficulties when enrolled in an online or hybrid class. Sometimes students do not even have a choice about online options, such as in the COVID-19 era, when the shift to remote instruction has happened and could happen at any time. Students need support for success in the online environment, yet many support models focus on the immediate problem rather than deeper root causes for the problem or misunderstanding. Traditional support models may use a ticket-based system that strives to quickly resolve the issue at hand. While the ticket-based system has some merit, there is …

Recommender Systems In Higher Education: The Effectiveness Of Meta-Data Analysis In Predicting Academic Success, Michael J. Holmes
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A recommender system is: “a software technology that proactively suggests items of interest to users based on their objective behavior or their explicitly stated preferences” (Pu et al., 2011, p. 157).
Whether we realize it or not, much of our lives are influenced by recommender systems. These systems may recommend where we eat, what movie we watch, what music we listen to, what products we buy, or even what news and social media content we see.
Recommender systems have been effectively utilized in higher education to recommend courses as well as customizing content within an online course to meet specific …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020, The Author(s). This scoping review provides an overview of COVID-19 approaches to managing unanticipated school closures and available literature related to young people learning outside-of-school. A range of material has been drawn upon to highlight educational issues of this learning context, including psychosocial and emotional repercussions. Globally, while some countries opted for a mass school shut-down, many schools remained open for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This partial closure not only enabled learning in smaller targeted groups but also offered a safe sanctuary for those who needed a regulated and secure environment. In Australia, if full school closures were …
Digital Labour And Temporal Priorities Within A Secondary School, Nicola F. Johnson
Digital Labour And Temporal Priorities Within A Secondary School, Nicola F. Johnson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Digital devices and ubiquitous online access contribute to the nature and amount of digital labour conducted by school staff. Drawing on more than 40 interviews with staff at one Australian secondary school, the general nature of this digital labour is presented, then Clancy’s notion of temporal autonomous spaces is introduced and applied to theorise why some teachers used digital technologies constantly in their teaching. The article highlights how some teachers invested their time in learning about and using digital technologies because it enhanced their sense of autonomy and increased their sense of freed time. It theorises how teachers who invest …

Perception Of Students And Insructors On The Impacts Of Gamification On Motivation And Teamwork Among Pharmacy Students By Using Kahoot!, Nadia Inez Junazli
Student Works (2020-2029)
There is an increased used of game-based student response system (GSRS) such as Quizziz and Kahoot! in Malaysian Pharmacy Schools where it has become a tool to increase motivation, engagement and facilitate collaborative learning. Although it is widely used in pharmacy schools across government and private Universities in Malaysia, there is little evidence to understand pharmacy students and their instructor’s perceptions and experiences on using Kahoot! in pharmacy subjects such as pharmaceutics and pharmacology. This qualitative study adopted a phenomenological approach to evaluate students’ and instructors’ experiences through in-depth interview sessions(N=11) to understand their change of attitude, experience, and perception …
