The primary goals of participating in this conference were to enhance my teaching skills by:

1) exploring emerging tools and instructional strategies to develop adaptive learning; and

2) more specifically, investigating ways to develop personalized learning, micro-learning, and gamification using various adaptive technology tools and learning analytics.

This provided an opportunity for me to improve my understanding of theoretical models and practical guidelines for the developing adaptive online learning course activities that facilitate increase students’ engagement and motivation.

This dissertation consists of two articles. The first article describes an architecture for intelligent tutoring that focuses on modularity. This new architecture is based on Gibbons' layers theory for instructional design (2014). Splitting up the architecture for an intelligent tutor into layers allows different pieces to age at different rates which, in turn, allows the intelligent tutor to be adapted to new research and design theories. This architecture supports building intelligent tutoring services, nimble programs that can be assembled together to replicate the functions of intelligent tutoring without the expertise needed to create the services. Paleontology is an interdisciplinary field that attracts a range of individuals, from hobbyists to professionals. A primary goal of the NSF-funded FOSSIL Project is to establish a unified community of paleontologists and promote best practices in the field of paleontology. The Belgrade PaleoBlitz was a pilot effort to meet these goals by guiding participants through the museum curation process via a rapid two-day immersion. This investigation experimentally evaluated the effects of eCoaching with Bug-in-Ear (BIE) technology on the use of contingent specific praise in three paraeducators working in a special education transition classroom. A trained special education teacher provided performance-based feedback in real-time as paraeducators worked one-on-one with transition-age students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and comorbid intellectual disability (ID). As such, we used a multiple baseline research design to evaluate the effects of the independent variable (i.e., eCoaching). Results indicated that eCoaching using BIE technology increased the use of contingent specific praise given by paraeducators as they worked one-on-one with students. Increased rates …

Helping preservice teachers develop positive attitudes toward using new pedagogical practices requires engaging them in professional learning and teaching practice. In this study, 16 preservice teachers engaged in an intervention that focused on integrating robots to teach mathematics to a group of first-grade students. The mathematical tasks engaged first-grade students with concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction, and identifying patterns. After the teaching experience, the preservice teachers responded to five open-ended questions that elicited their perceptions of using robots to teach mathematics to first-grade students. The article discusses phenomena that have likely influenced core-subject teachers’ perceptions of CTE and, in turn, their endorsement of CTE to students. California is taking steps towards successfully preparing students for college and career readiness, but more needs to be done (Bae & Darling-Hammond, 2014). Two vectors of the internationalization of US higher education—online courses and student diversity—intersect at a point where a broad mix of culturally and linguistically diverse students enroll in online courses, including writing courses. This study applies an English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) lens to examine language in an online writing environment in order to understand how the participants use their linguistic resources to communicate in English across varieties and around the world. Specifically, multimedia principles such as personalization, voice, and embodiment principles are developed based on social cues to promote deep learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate how principals learn to be technology leaders by examining the different ways principals learn and exploring the skills principals perceive are needed. The study also examines what principals do differently to develop a successful technology integration (or not). Using the critical incident method, 18 principals were interviewed from across the state. The in-depth interviews were transcribed for all participants interviewed and then analyzed using coding and theming with the aid of memos. From this, three predominant categories emerged: learning, skills, and challenges.

In the United States, there is a demand for richer clinical teacher education experiences. Partially in response to this call, innovative new programs like teacher residencies are being developed. As teacher preparation programs are shaped by these mandates, researchers must respond to shifts in the field. The current manuscript includes data from a resident, or teacher candidate, enrolled in a residency program—specifically, his yearlong apprenticeship. The present study was an attempt to help us reveal the characteristics and complexity of today’s first-time online students in a higher education setting. Data were collected from undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in fully online courses for the first time during spring semester in the 2016-2017 academic year at a Southern university in the United States. This study reviews the psychological and cognitive role of using videos, YouTube videos and modes of text support in foreign language learning, with a focus on the effect that captioning and subtitling YouTube videos have on intermediate-high and advanced German language learners. The results of the study found that enhanced captioning plays a more positive role on the intermediate-high and advanced German learners’ motivation likely due to more efficient language processing; more specifically the videos are able to provide linguistic integrity, which allows the language learners to focus their incidental attention effectively.
