We know little about how Air Force personnel use the computer resources with which they have been provided, though current plans call for spending over $75M on computer resources throughout the Air Force in FY 97. Research suggests that computer use relates to computer training, computer anxiety, and computer self-efficacy. Managers can take action to ensure that computers are better utilized with knowledge of how computer resources are being used, and an understanding of the effect that training, computer anxiety, and computer self-efficacy have on that usage. Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) development is a knowledge-intensive task, suffering from the same knowledge acquisition bottleneck that plagues most Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. This research presents an architecture that requires knowledge only in the form of a shallow knowledge base and a simulation to produce a training system. The knowledge base provides the basic procedural knowledge while the simulation provides context. The remainder of the knowledge required for training is learned through the interaction of these components in a state-space scenario exploration process and inductive machine learning. The goal of this research was to create a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) prototype tutorial to teach the fundamental principles of integrated, computer-aided manufacturing definition activity modeling (IDEFO), a component of business process reengineering within the Department of Defense. To accomplish this, the authors evaluated current instructional material related to IDEFO, then adapted the material to a computerized learning environment using the Authorware Professional™ authoring software and a hybrid methodology which incorporated elements both of instructional design and software development. The purpose of this research was to develop a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) tutorial that would address basic grammatical concepts. The research consisted of four phases. The first phase was a review of applicable CAI literature, including theories, instructional and programming techniques, and previous research findings. The second phase was a survey of communication professors to determine the grammatical errors commonly committed by students. Teachers from three randomly selected schools in a selected county in Georgia were subjects for a survey of attitudes toward using the microcomputer as an instructional tool. The instrument used in the study was a twelve-part questionnaire which employed the Likert scale technique. The survey revealed that in general there were positive attitudes among the teachers toward using the microcomputer ln the classroom. Negative attitudes, however, were revealed when teachers were asked about certain aspects of computer use, such as planning time, computer availability, and adequate training for teachers. Three hundred ninety-six students In a selected elementary school In Georgia served as subjects for the survey of attitudes toward Computer Assisted Instruction and the school environment. Total responses were tabulated and compared by grade levels, genders, and ethnic origins. The survey revealed strong positive attitudes toward Computer Assisted Instruction and the learning environment. The positive attitudes of Students At-Risk presented by the surveys indicated the current method of instruction used in this particular school was having a positive effect on the attitudes of the students who attend there. Additional data collected supported existing studies concerning student attitudes toward CAI.

This descriptive study was conducted to determine the attitudes of special education teachers toward using the computer as an instructional aid. The subjects were 78 secondary special education teachers from a southern metropolitan school district of approxіmately 30,000 students. The data-gathering instrument used for the study was a 20-item questionnaire devised by the researcher which employed the Likert scale to register the extent of agreement or disagreement with particular opinion statements.

The tutorials present how the President is elected, with a computer title of "Election," and how a bill becomes a law, with a computer title of "Make-Law." This project developed and field tested computer programs in language arts for use in a rural school system. A review of the literature compared the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction(CAI) in various academic areas, specifically focusing on the English curriculum. Commercially available computer programs from Texas Instruments were reviewed for content and format. Two computer programs were then developed on a TRS-80 color computer; the programs were designed specifically to assist in remedial instruction in the intermediate grades. This study was a descriptive survey of a junior high school's teachers' attitudes toward using the microcomputer as an instructional aid. The subjects were 25 academic teachers at a Muscogee County, Georgia, junior high school. Most of the teachers had been part of a pilot program to introduce a microcomputer laboratory at the junior high level.
