Educators and administrators have begun to place a high priority on connecting classrooms to the Internet. However, classroom computer use remains at least one step removed from teachers and is used to sustain existing curricula rather than serving as a catalyst for educational improvement. Professional communication is a major instrument for initiating and implementing educational reform; the Internet represents a primary computer-based forum for professional development. The purpose of the project was to develop a sample in-service curriculum focusing on the use of e-mail, newsgroups, and listservs as tools for professional development and communication among secondary educators.

The intent of this project was to adapt curriculum activities that integrate Internet technology with activities for children ages five through seven. Review of selected literature, relevant to the integration of technology was conducted. Findings presented support the integration of multimedia technology into the instruction of young childre.n. Portions of the Washington State Essential Learnings for reading, writing, and communication were incorporated in the development of the activities for use in the early childhood classroom.

Prereading activities are important in enabling students to comprehend and enjoy the books they read. Teachers are always in need of good prereading activities, and the increasing popularity of computers offers opportunities to fill this need, however, technology is not keeping up with educators' needs in this area. Development Of A Hypermedia Database For The Elementary Classroom, Jane Pattison Brown

A hypermedia database including selected flora and fauna in Kittitas County, Washington, was developed using HyperCard software for researching information about 400+ species. students had the opportunity to use the database in school libraries and in the author's fifth-grade classroom. The database cards accessed videodisc images where available. On the basis of limited study to date, it appears that when studying the environment, student learning was enhanced by the use of database material created by the author.

A Manual For Teacher Trainers Of The Trace™ Program, Michele Pennington Wadeikis

The focus of this project was to develop a manual to assist teachers in the training of fellow teachers on the management of student records. The program creates a time saving method in the training of a computerized gradebook found within the trACE™ program. The gradebook component of the trACE™ program offers a variety of report formats which assist with classroom organization and instructional planning. Included are lesson plans that show the training procedures for this project.

A Technologically Assisted Integrated Curriculum In The Seventh Grade, Laurie Kay Miller

The purpose of this project was to design and develop interdisciplinary learning units for middle level students which utilize the latest in educational technology. To accomplish this purpose, research and literature on interdisciplinary education and technology in education were reviewed. The learning units were developed for actual use by all seventh graders in seventh grade block classes at West Valley Junior High School in Yakima, Washington. The results of this type of learning have been very encouraging.

Emerging Practices In K-6 Multimedia Methods Of Instruction In The Bethel School District, Glenn E. Malone

The purpose of this study was to assess and describB the conditions and practices in the Bethel School District's elementary schools with regard to the use of a multimedia approach to instruction. A sample of the 260 classroom teachers, 13 principals, and 13 learning resource center specialists in the Bethel School District's 13 elementary schools (K-6) were surveyed using questionnaires covering the implementation of multimedia methods of instruction. The results showed current multimedia methods of instruction are rare in the elementary classrooms of the Bethel School District because of a lack of technological inservice and current multimedia hardware.

The Uses And Effectiveness Of Computers In Educational Administration, Steven W. Warren

The purpose of this study was to assess the uses and effectiveness of computers in educational administration. Principals from the high schools of Washington State's Mid-Valley AA League responded to a questionnaire regarding the uses of computers in their buildings and the perceived effectiveness of computers used for administrative tasks. Survey results indicated that the majority of high schools in the Mid-Valley AA League have used computers for common administrative tasks, and principals found that these tasks were accomplished more effectively with a computer.

This project involved the creation of an electronic gradebook designed to realistically meet the needs of classroom teachers. The computer source code was written in Pascal, a compiled language that allowed fast execution of any part of the program. The electronic gradebook called GradeS uses the graphic Desktop Intert'ace. It tracks up to 42 students per class, allowing up to 50 assignments per grading period. An unlimited number of classes can be stored on data disks. The presence of the microcomputer in society and education is on the increase. This study compared the expertise and use of computers by elementary principals, to the availability and attitudes of its implementation by the teaching staff. A questionnaire elicited data from principals and revealed that they indirectly influenced the increase of computer use by teachers by providing inservice opportunities, workshops, and courses, and directly influenced them by providing personal encouragement. Several recommendations were made concerning administrative use of computers.

Shortwave radio is a viable teaching tool for teachers in geography, social science, languages, and other areas of secondary and elementary curriculum. However, in the United States, teachers are generally not familiar with what is available to them on the shortwave radio and how they can adapt the use of the radio for their classrooms. This deficiency was the problem that this project intended to address.

Student progress toward an educational goal can be enhanced by the use of a curriculum containing both assessment and instruction. This project is such a curriculum based on the linear measurement items of the Brigance Inventory of Essential Skills. The careful sequencing and prevocational nature of this curriculum, along with its record-keeping forms, make it especially useful for special education. It is also available as a data disk for use with Apple microcomputers.

The purpose of this project report was to provide a group lesson training packet on the selection and the uses of personal computers in the home including information on their history, their basic components, the criteria to evaluate the need for one, and resource materials available on the topic. The instructional materials developed included: a leader's guide, visual aids, a videocassette tape, an activity sheet, information sheets, two evaluation tools, and a partial listing of existing Extension instructional materials on microcomputers.

Identifying The Readability Of The First Grade Books In The Vale School Library Using The Computerized Spache Formula, Doris Jean Byerley Rogers

Books were identified with first grade readability in the Vale Elementary School library, Cashmere, Washington, utilizing the computerized Spache formula. Listing of supplementary books and ways the supplementary books could be used in the classroom were also studied. Forty-one books with first grade readability were found in the 8,000 voiume collection. ·Three bibliographies were included: (a) Vale books with first grade readabili_ty, (b) publishers with first grade supplementary materials, and (c) a list of book selection aids. The writer concludes that trade books with first grade readability were difficult to identify.

An analysis of the Tolt Junior-Senior High School faculty's use of instructional media showed a need for a program designed to increase the effective use of the Learning Resource Center's available media. This project consisted of developing a series of inservice classes designed to train the teachers to better utilize the overhead, opaque, slide, filmstrip, and 16mm projectors, tape recorders, VTR, microfiche reader/printer, and dry mount press. Appropriate examples have been produced in each medium and a tool created for the evaluation of the inservice program.

The Effect Of An Administration Of Audio-Visual Aids On The Attitudes Of Geometry Students Toward Mathematics, Kirk Quistorff

This paper presents an experiment to determine the effect of an administration of audio-visual aids on the attitudes of geometry students. It was hypothesized that the experimental group would make a significant improvement in their attitude toward mathematics. The control group had eight-two students and the experimental group had forty-six students. In the control class no audio-visual aids other than the overhead projector were used. The results did not verify the hypothesis and the author concluded that more research was needed.

This paper presents the results of a survey of identifiable audiovisual program directors in Oregon and Washington education systems K-16. The purpose of the survey was to determine the amount of electronic background the directors had and if a knowledge of electronics was useful to them in the fulfillment of their duties as related to the selection, operation, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment. The survey indicated that such knowledge was useful.

Recommendations included a possible audiovisual electronics course for directors and suggestions for further study.

This paper presents a comparative investigation of five basic processes in the duplicating field that are readily available to teachers in British Columbia. Forty teachers from fourteen schools, kindergarten through grade twelve, were surveyed to determine present practices and needs for this method of communication. Cost, efficiency, and quality comparison are included.

Recommendations include the need for teacher in-service, guidelines for determining the most suitable means of reproducing learning materials on paper, and suggestions for additional research.

This thesis is an outline of the process and procedure in collecting information and developing a slide-tape series on hydroelectric generation and transmission of electricity. It includes some of the analysis involved in selection of the materials and media, along with a basic discussion of how it may be used by an instructor or individual students. It also includes a statement of problems involved in the gathering of materials and selection of correct slides to fit the requirements of the script.

An Experimental Study Of Two Audio-Visual Aids Used In Beginning Drafting, Ronald Norman West

This paper presents a study designed to identify the effectiveness of two visual aids, the chalkboard, and the overhead projector, as they are used in a junior high drafting program. The students involved in the study were randomly selected and placed in two treatment groups and one control group. The experiment did not prove that either visual aid was better than the other, but indicated that the overhead projector had more advantages and greater versatility than the chalkboard.

For this study, two groups of students were exposed to two different sets of self-instructions using a linear and broadview format. Each student was then asked to demonstrate, without the aid of instructions, operation of three machines selected by a laboratory assistant. The present study is investigative in nature and seeks to clarify the following question: whether a difference exists in student performance using linear or a broadview format.

However, the problem of determining budget expenditures necessitates a continual evaluation of the utility of specific equipment. This study was an attempt to ascertain the past and future preferences for eight millimeter and sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors. For purposes of this investigation, the following null hypothesis was used: Given a hypothetical grant, there would be no significant difference in preference for purchasing eight millimeter motion picture projectors over sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors by first-class school districts in the state of Washington.
