Prereading activities are important in enabling students to comprehend and enjoy the books they read. Teachers are always in need of good prereading activities, and the increasing popularity of computers offers opportunities to fill this need, however, technology is not keeping up with educators' needs in this area. While there is an overwhelming quantity of commercially produced computer software programs, they are invariably generic in nature. Development Of A Hypermedia Database For The Elementary Classroom, Jane Pattison Brown

A hypermedia database including selected flora and fauna in Kittitas County, Washington, was developed using HyperCard software for researching information about 400+ species. students had the opportunity to use the database in school libraries and in the author's fifth-grade classroom. The database cards accessed videodisc images where available. On the basis of limited study to date, it appears that when studying the environment, student learning was enhanced by the use of database material created by the author.

This study focuses on computer technology in the revision processes of composition students. Although advances in computer technology have had significant effects on composition instruction, teachers' attitudes toward, and expectations of, computers in the writing classroom have been divided concerning the effects of the technology on students' revision strategies and performance. With the first uses of computers in composition, researchers were overly optimistic about the computer's benefits in revision. After closer scrutiny, though, some researchers reported that computers had little effect on the quality of students' revisions. Existing instructional design and curriculum design strategy components were synthesized to provide a comprehensive set of design models for the development of learning systems. The term instructional logistics was coined to define the management of student progress through a series of customized learning experiences. Strategies were developed for the design of student-centered learning systems by partitioning a curriculum into meaningful and manageable pieces (called chunques) and by manipulating those pieces to create personalized and individualized paths through a series of self-contained learning experiences. Emerging Practices In K-6 Multimedia Methods Of Instruction In The Bethel School District, Glenn E. Malone

The purpose of this study was to assess and describB the conditions and practices in the Bethel School District's elementary schools with regard to the use of a multimedia approach to instruction. A sample of the 260 classroom teachers, 13 principals, and 13 learning resource center specialists in the Bethel School District's 13 elementary schools (K-6) were surveyed using questionnaires covering the implementation of multimedia methods of instruction. The results showed current multimedia methods of instruction are rare in the elementary classrooms of the Bethel School District because of a lack of technological inservice and current multimedia hardware.

The purpose of this project report was to provide a group lesson training packet on the selection and the uses of personal computers in the home including information on their history, their basic components, the criteria to evaluate the need for one, and resource materials available on the topic. The instructional materials developed included: a leader's guide, visual aids, a videocassette tape, an activity sheet, information sheets, two evaluation tools, and a partial listing of existing Extension instructional materials on microcomputers.

This study was designed to research the development of the physical education program at Eastern Illinois University relative to its use of audio visual materials. The period covered was 1899-1984. The curriculum of physical education was researched from 1899-1924 to provide background for the reporting of the early use of audio visual materials.

The writer interviewed Dr . Gene W. Scholes, Director of the Audio Visual Center, and checked the Center's inventory records. The writer also interviewed staff members of the Physical Education Department and thereby established that instructional media materials were used extensively in athletics and in departmental activities. …

This paper presents a comparative investigation of five basic processes in the duplicating field that are readily available to teachers in British Columbia. Forty teachers from fourteen schools, kindergarten through grade twelve, were surveyed to determine present practices and needs for this method of communication. Cost, efficiency, and quality comparison are included.

Recommendations include the need for teacher in-service, guidelines for determining the most suitable means of reproducing learning materials on paper, and suggestions for additional research.

A Comparison Of Media Between The Linear And Broadview Approach In Self-Instruction, Leslie T. Cotter

For this study, two groups of students were exposed to two different sets of self-instructions using a linear and broadview format. Each student was then asked to demonstrate, without the aid of instructions, operation of three machines selected by a laboratory assistant. The present study is investigative in nature and seeks to clarify the following question: whether a difference exists in student performance using linear or a broadview format.

Educators recognize the contributions motion picture films make in the classroom learning situation. However, the problem of determining budget expenditures necessitates a continual evaluation of the utility of specific equipment. This study was an attempt to ascertain the past and future preferences for eight millimeter and sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors. For purposes of this investigation, the following null hypothesis was used: Given a hypothetical grant, there would be no significant difference in preference for purchasing eight millimeter motion picture projectors over sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors by first-class school districts in the state of Washington.

I feel the video tape recorder will have a very definite place in the schools. It will be one of our audiovisual aids, just as television, the 16mm. projector and others. It is a tool with unlimited possibilities and a great deal of flexibility. It is a device that can and will be used by teachers at all levels of teaching. It is not an instrument to take the place of the teacher, but, like all audiovisual equipment, is a tool to help the teacher do a more effective job.

Three objections arc frequently made to the installation of moving-picture equipment in schools by teachers and school administrators. The first objection is that good materials are not available when needed. Secondly, teachers are not trained to use them. Thirdly, they are too expensive. The Central Washington College of Education at Ellensburg has recently established a library of 16-mm. sound films. These films, consisting of seventy-six titles, are being circulated among twelve school systems of the state on a subscription basis.
