PROBLEM: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of implementing a teacher in-service training program in values clarification on the attitudes students develop toward themselves, school, and the teacher.

PROCEDURE: Two kindergarten through sixth grade elementary schools served as the experimental and control groups for the study. Ten classes of third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students participated in the experimental group and eight third through sixth grade classes of students served in the control group. The purpose of the study was to identify those measured skills contained within the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) which would differentiate among the organic mental defective, the familial mental defective, and these children misidentified as mentally retarded because of language and cultural differences.

Two experiments were performed to discover the affect of equalization of positive and negative instances in the presentation of stimuli for Attribute Identification and Rule Learning problems. 56 student volunteers from CWSC were used as subjects. Stimuli were presented to them either according to the traditional truth table representation (four classes for every four trials) or by presenting an equal number of positive and negative instances. The results showed that tasks requiring identification of the relevant attributes among stimulus characteristics were performed better if the stimuli were equalized for positive and negative instances.

The purposes of this study were: (1) to compare nine groups of subjects composed of intellectually normal children, mentally retarded adolescents, and mentally retarded adults on a three dimensional concept formation task; (2) to determine the effects of discrimination training on the sortings of the nine groups on the experimental task.

The history of other sciences reveals that these are the growing pains out of which there will emerge the matured science. Meanwhile, the squabbles and the confusion are here and we must do something about them.
