The Use Of Multiple Intelligence Concepts With Middle School Students And Future Academic Achievement, Christa Fountain Glenn

Dissertations

This quantitative quasi-experimental study examined the variables of student’s grade point averages when Multiple Intelligences were introduced and implemented in a study in 2007. To examine this information, in 2007 a study was conducted of 115 eighth grade students from a single grade school in the southern United States. At the conclusion of the study in 2007, it was the researchers’ belief that students may possibly utilize the Multiple Intelligences in their upcoming years as high school students, therefore, the study continued and the academic achievement by way of grade point averages of 94 of the original students now ending …

Temperamental Attention And Activity, Classroom Emotional Support, And Academic Achievement In Third Grade, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Kathleen Cranley Gallagher, Jamie M. White

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to examine the interplay of children’s temperamental attention and activity (assessed when children were 4-and-a-half years old) and classroom emotional support as they relate to children’s academic achievement in third grade. Particular focus is placed on the moderating role of classroom emotional support on the relationship between temperament (attention and activity level) and academic achievement. Regression analyses indicated that children’s attention and activity level were associated with children’s third grade reading and mathematics achievement, and classroom emotional support was associated with children’s third grade reading and mathematics achievement. In addition, classroom emotional support moderated …

The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, David Andrew Gorman Jan 2010

The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, David Andrew Gorman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This causal-comparative study with a narrative component investigated the effect athletic participation on the academic achievement of senior student-athletes and non-athletes who attended three public high schools in Eastern Tennessee. The impetus for the study was the conflicting research as it relates to the impact athletics participation had on academic success at the college and high school levels. Through student athlete and non-athlete comparisons of ACT scores and GPAs, the researcher found athletic participation did not affect academic achievement for high school seniors who graduated in 2009 from the three target high schools when compared to non-athletes. However, statistically significant …

Motivating Students: Identifying And Motivating Reluctant Learners To Reach Their Academic Potential, Kim Yeager Feb 2008

Motivating Students: Identifying And Motivating Reluctant Learners To Reach Their Academic Potential, Kim Yeager

All Graduate Projects

Motivation plays an important role in determining how well a child will perform in school (Philips & Lindsay, 2006). Regardless of how intelligent or capable a student may be if the student is not motivated to do well then their academic performance will be less than it could have been with some motivation. Teachers need to understand why some students are motivated to try hard in school and why some students are not. This understanding will lead teachers to understand why their students are not reaching their academic potential. The purpose of this project was to design a guide that …

First-Year Student Retention And Achievement: The Influence Of Diversity And Background Characteristics, Krystall Dunaway Jul 2006

First-Year Student Retention And Achievement: The Influence Of Diversity And Background Characteristics, Krystall Dunaway

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The racial climate of a campus can be either prejudicial or cooperative, and is directly affected by the frequency and profoundness of diverse interactions (Antonio, 2001); the greater the number and meaningfulness of diverse interactions, the more positive the campus climate. When related to Tinto's Student Departure Theory (1993), it is not difficult to deduce that the more comfortable and satisfied a student feels with the diversity climate on campus, the more likely he or she is to feel integrated, thus to maintain his or her student status at that university and also to perform well academically. Conversely, incongruence, or …

Goal Orientation, Ethnicity, And Achievement Of Middle Elementary Students, Carl Phillip Koehnke Jan 2005

Goal Orientation, Ethnicity, And Achievement Of Middle Elementary Students, Carl Phillip Koehnke

Theses Digitization Project

Examines goal orientation, ethnicity, gender, and achievement variables of 149 elementary school children (grades 3-5) at a Southern California elementary school. Research was conducted using a 2 x 2 goal orientation matrix that included mastery-approach, mastery-avoid, performance approach, and performance-avoid constructs. California Standards Test (CST) were used to determine achievement. Results supported the hypothesis that there would be no differences based on ethnicity, gender, or grade level. Statistically significant differences were found in the mastery-avoid goal because of class subject. Also, mastery-avoid was found to have a negative correlation to high test scores as measured by CST.

Reevaluating Course Completion In Distance Education—Avoiding The Comparison Between Apples And Oranges, Scott L. Howell, R. Dwight Laws, Nathan K. Lindsay Jan 2004

Reevaluating Course Completion In Distance Education—Avoiding The Comparison Between Apples And Oranges, Scott L. Howell, R. Dwight Laws, Nathan K. Lindsay

Faculty Publications

Critics of distance education frequently assert that completion rates are lower in distance education courses than in traditional courses. Such criticism comes despite sparse and inconclusive research on completion rates for distance and traditional education courses. This article reviews some of the existing research and then describes some of the caveats and complexities in comparing completion rates in traditional and distance education. Analysis reveals that numerous factors make comparison between these two formats difficult, if not impossible. Problems include limitations in the research design itself, differences in student demographics, and inconsistent methods of calculating and reporting completion. After exploring these …

The Soul Of Scholarship: The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Religious Orientation Of College -Bound High School Seniors, Karmen Petersen Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has suggested a relationship between religiousness and various aspects of physical and mental health; however, an examination of the relationship between religious orientation and academic achievement appears to be an under-explored area of empirical research. The present study investigated the relationship of academic achievement and religious orientation of college-bound high school seniors. The Intrinsic and Extrinsic subscales of Allport's (Allport & Ross, 1967) Religious Orientation Scale and the Quest subscale of Batson's (Batson & Ventis, 1982) Religious Life Inventory were interspersed into a 32-item Likert-style questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered in both large group and small group format …

Does Wisdom Really Come With Age?: Cognitive Differences Between Traditional And Nontraditional Aged College Women, Kelli Jean England Jul 1998

Does Wisdom Really Come With Age?: Cognitive Differences Between Traditional And Nontraditional Aged College Women, Kelli Jean England

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Nontraditional aged (age 25 and over) college women outperform traditional aged (age 18-24) college women academically. This research reviewed areas of differences in the two groups and proposed that differences in two main areas contribute to performance: motivation and cognitive maturation. One hundred and twelve female traditional and nontraditional aged students completed Mehrabian's Achieving Tendency Scale (MATS), the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA), and the Learning Environment Preferences measure (LEP). Students were identified as traditional aged (18-24 years), younger nontraditional aged (25-31 years), and older nontraditional aged (& 32 years). Grade point average (GPA) was used as a measure of …

Causal Influences Of Mental Overload And Self-Efficacy On Academic Performance, Elizabeth Jane Barbo Jan 1997

Causal Influences Of Mental Overload And Self-Efficacy On Academic Performance, Elizabeth Jane Barbo

Theses Digitization Project

In the past, literature has proposed relationships between several different factors. Multiple roles influence performance and stress, good performance increases self-efficacy, high self-efficacy increases performance, and increased amounts of stress decrease performance. While performance can be measured in different ways, the literature has supported using academic achievement as a performance indicator.

The Relationship Between Self Concept Reports And Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Eugene A. Dudley Jan 1973

The Relationship Between Self Concept Reports And Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Eugene A. Dudley

All Master's Theses

This study examined the relationship between self concept reports on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and academic achievement. Thirty-one male and 24 female tenth grade students whose obtained scores on the National Educational Development Test met the criteria for under-achievers, achievers, and overachievers were given the TSCS. A significant correlation was found between GPA and total positive score (r = .28, sig. .05). Underachievers defined by low grades had significantly lower self concept scores than did underachievers defined as achieving 1 SD below their predicted achievement level on the NEDT.

Primary Education By Correspondence: Being An Account Of The Methods And Achievements Of The Australian Correspondence Schools In Instructing Children Living In Isolated Areas, Kenneth Stewart Cunningham

Student learning processes

An account of the methods and achievements of the Australian correspondence schools in instructing children living in isolated areas. It seems that Australia can claim to be the first country to have shown in a systematic way, and on a large scale, that it is possible to provide by correspondence a complete elementary education for children who have never been to school. Cunningham reviews the conditions giving rise to correspondence instruction, the growth and scope of the Correspondence Schools, curricula and methods, attainments and progress of pupils.
