Student motivation plays a central role in academic success, influencing persistence, engagement, and performance across grade levels. Within situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT), motivation is shaped by students’ beliefs about their ability to succeed (expectancy), the importance or usefulness they assign to a task (value), the perceived effort or trade-offs involved (cost), and the situational context in which learning occurs. This qualitative interpretivist case study explores, at a singular institution, medical students’ perspectives on the social and cognitive factors influencing the learning process as students prepare for the Step 1 examination. While prior research regarding medical students Step 1 preparation have focused primarily on wellness, stress, and career outcomes, limited studies have examined medical students' lived experiences to navigate what occurs during the learning process while they prepare for this critical exam. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this dissertation draws on fourteen student interviews, seven that passed Step 1 on their first attempt, and seven that failed. Findings reveal …

Calibration, or students’ ability to predict and postdict their performance on an academic task, has important implications for academic performance. It can influence students' decision making processes concerning learning activities, as well as their levels of motivation and self-regulation (Kolovelonis, 2023). The literature on calibration is clear, often indicating that students are not great at these judgements (Lin et. al, 2001). While this phenomenon is well documented, it is not an easy one to explain. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) posits that the quality of students’ motivation regulation (i.e., autonomous versus controlled) shapes both learning and health behavior, yet few studies have examined the relations among motivation regulation, alcohol and cannabis use, and achievement. In this study, I surveyed 459 undergraduates at a mid-sized public university in the southeastern United States. Participants completed the Academic Motivation Scale-College version 28 to assess autonomous and controlled motivation regulation, a typical-week alcohol grid, a seven-day cannabis grid, and self-reported grade point average (GPA). Results indicated that autonomous academic motivation was uniquely related to GPA; however, neither motivation variable related to …

Behavior management has long been a challenge for teachers in general, but there has been a lack of research on behavior management through the lens of personality type, such as introversion. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the strengths and skills of introverted teachers to facilitate positive behaviors in their classrooms, as well as challenges they encountered. In a semi-structured interview, five teachers from a school district in the Central Upper Peninsula of Michigan were presented with a specific set of questions (See Appendix C) targeting their experiences in behavior management as introverted teachers. This project explores how multimodal, fairness-aware machine learning models can enhance early prediction of student success while promoting equity in higher education. Traditional prediction models often rely on static academic or demographic data, which can unintentionally reinforce bias and overlook the complex, behavioral aspects of learning. Our approach integrates engagement metrics from learning management systems, academic performance data, and motivational survey responses to capture a more holistic view of student learning. A descriptive qualitative method, employing a case study approach, was utilized to examine phenomena in three schools located in the Kupang district of East Kupang sub-district. Gadget addiction is often associated with poor social interaction skills, anxiety, and physical health. However, few studies have addressed the issue of gadget addiction in early childhood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a family counseling model that internalizes values from ancient Javanese texts to reduce gadget addiction in early childhood. The ancient Javanese text used was Kakawin Sutasoma, which describes the meaningful journey of Prince Sutasoma. This study was an experiment with a single-subject ABA design. School psychologists are charged with providing guidance related to the implementation of evidence-based interventions across academic subjects including mathematics. Despite recent advances in the availability of empirically supported intervention and instructional strategies in math, finding appropriate math-related interventions that go beyond fluency building and metacognitive techniques into the realm of math understanding and concept building remains difficult for school psychologists. The adaptation of a framework-based approach to mathematics intervention, such as one developed by the National Center on Intensive Intervention, provides school psychologists with an evidence-based approach that overcomes numerous barriers to providing support for students struggling with mathematics learning.

The grit theory emphasizes that persistence and passion for pursuing long-term goals are more important for success than innate talent alone. The purpose of this research was to assess students' grit levels and examine how they relate to academic performance. The study employed a quantitative correlational design to systematically measure numerical data, which helps identify patterns and relationships among various influencing factors. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian evaluatif yang bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka di sekolah dasar Kecamatan Bulupoddo, Kabupaten Sinjai, menggunakan model evaluasi CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product). Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner dan wawancara dengan kepala sekolah, guru kelas, dan guru mata pelajaran, kemudian dianalisis secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada evaluasi Context, pelaksanaan kurikulum operasional satuan pendidikan sudah baik, meskipun beberapa aspek memerlukan perbaikan. Pada evaluasi Input, sebagian besar sekolah telah memenuhi kriteria pelaksanaan Kurikulum Merdeka, tetapi masih terdapat kekurangan dalam pelatihan guru mata pelajaran dan ketersediaan fasilitas pembelajaran. This study investigated the effectiveness of an Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) module in electrochemistry for engineering students. Students' conceptual knowledge and problem-solving abilities were assessed using a quasi-experimental design that included pre-and post-tests. The experimental group used the OBE module, while the control group received traditional instruction. Statistical tests, including t-tests and correlation analysis, established the module's impact. The post-test scores of the experimental group differed significantly from those of the control group. Faculty and student assessments verified the module's effectiveness in content quality, instructional approach, and learning effectiveness. Critical thinking is essential in 21st-century education, but its application in English language teaching (ELT) in Indonesia still needs to be better understood. This research examines the understanding and application of critical thinking among prospective ELT teachers in Indonesia. Using qualitative methods with in-depth interviews with three pre-service ELT teachers, this study revealed that prospective teachers understand critical thinking as the ability to analyse, evaluate, and synthesize information. They employ strategies such as group discussions and accurate case analysis to encourage critical thinking but face challenges such as time constraints and variations in student abilities. The lack of learning interest and environmental awareness among students poses a particular challenge in the school learning process. This study introduces ecoprint pounding as an alternative environment-based learning medium that is not only educational, but also enjoyable and contextual. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a participatory method. The research subjects were elementary school students who were directly involved in the ecoprint-making process, starting from selecting leaves to printing patterns on fabric using the pounding technique. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis kebutuhan gamifikasi interaktif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep sains siswa kelas VI sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Sekolah Indonesia Riyadh, Arab Saudi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah 43 siswa kelas VI sekolah dasar. Metode yang digunakan berupa angket kebutuhan gamifikasi interaktif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa seluruh siswa kelas VI Sekolah Indonesia Riyadh memiliki perangkat digital untuk belajar dan memanfaatkan aplikasi digital untuk pembelajaran. Sebanyak 63% siswa menyatakan bahwa materi yang dianggap sulit adalah akibat pergerakan bumi dan bulan. The study explores the nuances of students' knowledge, self-assurance, and difficulties when navigating the domains of numeracy and logical-mathematical reasoning by evaluating and comparing the levels of mathematical literacy, numeracy, and logical-mathematical thinking among higher-education students. This research uses a thorough survey covering various mathematical literacy dimensions, such as the capacity to apply mathematical ideas in practical contexts, comprehension of numeracy and literacy, assurance when working with numerical data, and the influence of emotional variables on rational thought.
