Knowledge To Support Reading And Writing Among Teachers Of Students Who Are Blind Or Visually Impaired, Nosheen Gul
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to produce two manuscripts and a conference paper reporting on analyses of data from a survey that investigated the knowledge, beliefs, and self-perceptions of 236 teachers of students who are blind or visually impaired (TSBVIs) with regard to literacy instruction. The first manuscript investigated the linguistic awareness and dyslexia beliefs of TSBVIs, and the relation of these factors to demographic characteristics and teacher training. With regards to linguistic awareness, results indicated no association with the number of courses TSBVIs had taken on teaching reading to students who are blind or visually impaired, highest degree …
The Effect Of Depression On Adolescent Deviant Behavior And The Mediating Effect Of Autonomy, Theresa Lee
The Effect Of Depression On Adolescent Deviant Behavior And The Mediating Effect Of Autonomy, Theresa Lee
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to synthesize the relations among the adolescent need for autonomy in decision making process, depression, and tendencies for deviant or risk-taking behaviors as adolescents. Background variables such as socio-economic status, sex, race, previous academic achievement, parent warmth and support, resistance to peer pressure were controlled for. Using the NICHD database set, multiple regression analyses revealed that adolescent autonomy was not correlated with adolescent depression, and earlier depression at sixth grade was not a significant mediator of the effect of earlier deviant behaviors at sixth grade on later adolescent deviant behaviors. More importantly, however, the …

Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Community College Students Who Have Practiced Meditation, Robert S. Withrow-Clark
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the lived experiences of community college students who have engaged in meditation practice during their time as community college students. Utilizing semi-structured interviews and a qualitative, transcendental phenomenological approach, the researcher investigated the phenomenon of meditation practice among community college meditators, while attempting to better understand the shared meaning respondents ascribed to the phenomenon, in this case meditation practice. Data was collected from eight respondents, generating four overarching themes, and several subthemes. All respondents who participated in the study reported perceived psychological benefits that they attributed to their meditation practice. Psychological stress was the motivating factor, a …
Precarious Enjoyment: Suicide Contra Schizophrenia, Mohammed Rawwas
Precarious Enjoyment: Suicide Contra Schizophrenia, Mohammed Rawwas
Honors Program Theses
Mainstream psychology denies the unconscious, and is therefore unequipped to properly address the problematic of mental health, instead providing the coordinates for the symptom-formation of mental unwellness as a reaction to the inherent split of the subject, through the installation of the myth of the self-identical I. This same myth is perpetuated through capitalist individualism and the imperative to enjoy, and in the University through the discourse of science. The aim of psychoanalysis is to traverse the fantasy of this symptom-formation, and return the split to the subject. Finally, suicide is posited as the inevitable result of a self-identical notion …

K-12 Blended Teaching Skills And Abilities: An Analysis Of Blended Teaching Artifacts, Cecil R. Short, Charles R. Graham, Emily Sabey
Faculty Publications
Several professional organizations, non-profit groups, and researchers have provided K–12 blended teaching (BT) competencies; however, few of these have connected competencies to concrete practices. This analysis used a set of research-based BT dispositions, technology skills, and competencies (i.e., proficiencies) to analyze a representative sample of 959 artifacts focused on BT practices to uncover the proficiencies important to K–12 BT. The dispositions recognized for BT appeared in 87.9% of the artifacts, personalization competencies in 58.3%, technology skills in 54.0%, data practices in 46.0%, implementation competencies in 37.1%, online integration competencies in 30.4%, and online interaction competencies in 5.6%. Each of these …

Bullying Prevention And Social Justice: Recommendations For Teachers, Anna Grigorian-Routon
Bullying Prevention And Social Justice: Recommendations For Teachers, Anna Grigorian-Routon
Theses and Dissertations
Though bullying was once considered a "rite of passage," in recent years experts have begun to re-conceptualize bullying as an imbalance of power between the bully and the victim and to recognize the deleterious mental health outcomes that are often the result of having experienced or having participated in bullying. This phenomenon is also coming to be viewed more broadly as a human rights violation as it creates and perpetuates barriers for specific student populations to equal access to education. Historically, teachers have been among the most outspoken advocates of social justice issues and are on the front lines of …
Identifying Characteristics That Lead To Better Academic Performance For International Students In U.S. Colleges, Hadi Rajabbeigi
Identifying Characteristics That Lead To Better Academic Performance For International Students In U.S. Colleges, Hadi Rajabbeigi
Theses and Dissertations
A large proportion of students in the United States is international students. Thus, educational leaders need to facilitate the learning process for this population. This study investigated the characteristics of international students that affect their academic performance. The purpose of this study was to determine how individual characteristics of international students affect the learning strategies they choose and how it affects their academic performance. For this purpose, the survey was designed according to the literature, which measures characteristic variables based on VIA character strengths (Peterson & Seligman, 2004), learning strategies (MSLQ) developed by Pintrich et al. (1991), and academic performance …
"Nice, Quiet Hand": The Creation And Navigation Of Feeling Rules In A Second Grade Classroom, Avery Munns
"Nice, Quiet Hand": The Creation And Navigation Of Feeling Rules In A Second Grade Classroom, Avery Munns
Honors Theses
Emotions are largely viewed as individual and internal, but in reality, emotions are socially situated. This project aims to use a sociology of emotions framework in order to explore how emotional expectations are created, maintained, and navigated within a classroom environment. Through a series of observations over the course of a month, I set out to answer questions surrounding which emotions were encouraged, which emotions were discouraged, and how both teachers and students created and navigated these feeling rules. Overall, I found that emotions were largely discouraged, especially through the overarching feeling rules of “be quiet” and “control your body.” …
Teaching Students Effective Learning Strategies, Hung-Tao Chen, Megan Thomas, Katelyn Mcclure
Teaching Students Effective Learning Strategies, Hung-Tao Chen, Megan Thomas, Katelyn Mcclure
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Much research has focused on the effect of learning strategies such as completing practice testing and highlighting. Previous research has found that practice tests and distributed practice are the most effective while elaborate interrogative, self-explanation, and interleaved practice are moderately effective (Dunlosky et al., 2013). Other common strategies, such as summarization, are found to be ineffective. Many college students use these ineffective learning strategies, and it is therefore important to teach students to use good learning strategies. The current study compared a video-based teaching method on effective learning strategies versus a text-based method. Undergraduate students (n=109) were taught effective learning …
Collective Teacher Efficacy And Its Enabling Conditions: Measurement And Associations, Christine Marie Anderson
Collective Teacher Efficacy And Its Enabling Conditions: Measurement And Associations, Christine Marie Anderson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Background/Purpose: Over two decades of research has demonstrated that collective teacher efficacy has a significant effect on student learning, and numerous studies have explored environmental variables related to high levels of collective teacher efficacy (Donohoo, 2018, Donohoo et al., 2020; Eells, 2011; Hattie, 2016). Donohoo et al.’s (2020) enabling conditions for collective teacher efficacy (EC-CTES) propose a synthesized framework educational practitioners can implement to foster collective teacher efficacy in their schools. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the validity of Donohoo et al.’s (2020) emerging EC-CTES and evaluate the strength and direction of its relationship to measures …

Understanding Prosocial Teasing In Early Adolescence, Kristina Wiemer
Understanding Prosocial Teasing In Early Adolescence, Kristina Wiemer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Prosocial teasing is not well known or understood by educators. Prosocial teasing is intentional but playful verbal and non-verbal provocation meant to be taken non-literally by the target of the tease (Keltner et al., 2001) and is not an uncommon experience for students to have (Barnett et al., 2004). While much research has been conducted on social and emotional skills (Nix et al., 2013; Smith & Low, 2013), there is still a gap in the literature looking at how these skills relate to prosocial teasing. The current study examined and described middle school students’ use of prosocial teasing and their …
