Effect Of Student Classroom Cell Phone Usage On Teachers, Daniel Pulliam
Effect Of Student Classroom Cell Phone Usage On Teachers, Daniel Pulliam
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The increase in student cell phone use in classrooms has led to a decrease in academic performance and satisfaction with instruction (Dietz & Henrich, 2014). Currently, it is unknown as to whether student classroom cell phone usage has any effect on the teacher. The purpose of this study was to determine student and teacher opinions of classroom cell phone usage and perceived distraction. Surveys were conducted with a sample of college students (N = 163) and college faculty (N = 289), from a university in the Southeastern region of the United States. Data indicate there are differing opinions on classroom …
The Effects Of Provided Powerpoint Presentations On Student Perceptions Of Personal Responsbility, Sarah Elizabeth Mannon Cravero
The Effects Of Provided Powerpoint Presentations On Student Perceptions Of Personal Responsbility, Sarah Elizabeth Mannon Cravero
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Psychologists have examined the effects of numerous variables on classroom performance, but little research exists to demonstrate how specific teaching techniques, specifically the provision of printed presentation notes (such as presentation slides), affects student perception of responsibility. This study sought to discover the impact that providing presentation slides for use during lecture would have on students’ performance, as well as their perceptions of personal responsibility. In order to determine the effects of provided presentation notes on performance and perceived responsibility, this study examined the self-efficacy and locus of control of students assigned to either take their own notes or to …
Where Do You Want To Get To? Effective Professional Learning Begins With A Clear Destination In Mind, Thomas R. Guskey
Where Do You Want To Get To? Effective Professional Learning Begins With A Clear Destination In Mind, Thomas R. Guskey
Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications
Educators often shy away from evaluating professional learning experiences because they believe the process requires knowledge and skills they don’t possess. In truth, evaluation is a relatively simple process that begins by answering three essential questions.
An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Dropout Factors And Interventions By Middle School And High School Teachers In A Southeastern School District, Christopher Kennedy
An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Dropout Factors And Interventions By Middle School And High School Teachers In A Southeastern School District, Christopher Kennedy
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although graduation rates are increasing in the United States, high school dropouts remain an issue of significant concern. Much of the focus of research in this area has been on describing the characteristics of dropouts rather than on developing effective interventions. Moreover, emerging research shows that potential dropouts can be identified with confidence as early as the sixth grade. High school is the time in which dropouts are typically identified and interventions begun, but the seeds of dropping out are often planted well before ninth grade. This survey research study with quantitative analysis used an instrument titled Teacher Perceptions of …

Extracurricular Participation And Self-Concept In Rural Elementary Students: A Causal-Comparative Study, Donna Sexton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this ex post facto, causal comparative study was to test the interactional framework of self-concept theory and Gibson’s ecological theory of perceptual development with Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development by investigating the overarching research question, Is there a statistically significant difference between mean scores for self-concept (academic, social, and overall) based on extracurricular participation portfolio (sports only, non-sports only, mixed activity types, or no participation) in rural elementary students? The relationship of extracurricular participation to positive outcomes in adolescents has been established in prior research. This study is significant because it ameliorates the paucity of research on …
The Effect Of Game-Based Learning On Vocabulary Acquisition For Middle School English Language Learners, Jeanette Benoit
The Effect Of Game-Based Learning On Vocabulary Acquisition For Middle School English Language Learners, Jeanette Benoit
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
English language learners (ELLs) in America face huge challenges in middle school. Although many ELLs quickly assimilate into the American culture and develop their social language rapidly, they continue to struggle academically. One reason ELLs find themselves behind their native English-speaking peers is their lack of academic vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary can be learned both implicitly with extensive reading and explicitly with direct and focused instruction. Research has shown that implicit vocabulary learning is not as effective with ELLs and the need for effective explicit learning strategies is apparent. This study revealed no statistically significant difference in academic vocabulary scores when …

The Effect Of Enrollment Status On Plagiarism Among Traditional And Non-Traditional Students, Robert Roth
The Effect Of Enrollment Status On Plagiarism Among Traditional And Non-Traditional Students, Robert Roth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Previous research has consistently shown that plagiarism in higher education exists. Most of the previous research had measured the number of incidents of plagiarism at different institutions of higher learning. Recently, research has tried to identify incidents of plagiarism in relation to student demographics or academic discipline. With the increase in older adults returning to school and the advancements in distance education, there is a need to understand whether acts of plagiarism vary by student status (i.e., traditional versus non-traditional enrollment). The purpose of this research was to examine incidents of plagiarism among traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students. Five thousand …

Online Students' Perceptions And Utilization Of A Proximate Community Of Engagement At An Online Independent Study Program, Darin Reed Oviatt
Theses and Dissertations
Distance learning has provided solutions for students for more than a century. Students access distance learning due to issues with access, credit recovery need, or need for flexibility in location, time, pace, or duration of instruction. Recent advances in technology and instructional designs allow more interactive and synchronous instruction. Researchers suggest that designs using collaborative-constructivist approaches result in deeper learning and increased student satisfaction. Such courses implement theories based on interactions, creation of communities, and learner-centered design. The increase in online curriculum offered and, in some cases, required for K-12 students indicates a need to consider learning characteristics of adolescent …

Tiers 1, 2 & 3 Intervention: Postsecondary Transition Planning, Shir Palmon, Natalie Hoff, Allison Heifner, Reece L. Peterson
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Conclusion
Postsecondary transition planning is how schools assist students in preparing for postsecondary education or employment after high school. This vital educational component is required in IEPs for any student with disabilities, aged 16 and older. However, transition planning is also helpful for other students who are at-risk for dropping out or are uncertain about what they want to do after high school. There are several useful evidence-based transition practices, including the completion of vocational education coursework, involving students in their IEPs and or transition planning process, and changing program structures to those that have proven to be effective in …
Individual And Intra-Individual Differences In Interest During Instrumental Music Classes In Suburban High Schools, Beth Ann Turner
Individual And Intra-Individual Differences In Interest During Instrumental Music Classes In Suburban High Schools, Beth Ann Turner
Doctoral Dissertations
Individual differences in interest (how students’ interest differs from one another in response to the same experiences) and intra-individual differences in interest (how each student’s interest changes across different experiences) are theorized to play a part in a complex system of interactions between students, lesson content, and educational context. In this study, 360 students from two suburban high school instrumental programs in Northern California rated an average of 12 classroom tasks and music selections on the dimensions of interest, meaning, involvement, complexity, and comprehension. Expected relationships between interest and the other variables were informed by literature on situational interest in …

Structural Equation Modeling Of Multiple-Indicator Multimethod-Multioccasion Data: A Primer, Christian Geiser, Fred A. Hintz, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera
Psychology Faculty Publications
We provide a tutorial on how to analyze multiple-indicator multi-method (MM) longitudinal (multi-occasion, MO) data. Multiple-indicator MM-MO data presents specific challenges due to (1) different types of method effects, (2) longitudinal and cross-method measurement equivalence (ME) testing, (3) the question as to which process characterizes the longitudinal course of the construct under study, and (4) the issue of convergent validity versus method-specificity of different methods such as multiple informants. We present different models for multiple-indicator MM-MO data and discuss a modeling strategy that begins with basic single-method longitudinal confirmatory factor models and ends with more sophisticated MM-MO models. Our proposed …

Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) were developed in response to a historically demonstrated need for ethical guidance and accountability in research with human subjects. The inhumane and unethical treatment of prisoners of war and underrepresented populations in the pre-IRB era are the antithesis of today’s national and international acts, codes, and declarations. Over the last five decades of IRB-reviewed research, several concerns about the IRB process have been raised. In this editorial, we review common concerns regarding the scope and functioning of IRBs. We also review the updated federal Common Rule, effective January 2018, and discuss how some of the reviewed …

Predicting Dissertation Methodology Choice Among Doctoral Candidates At A Faith-Based University, Rebecca Lunde
Predicting Dissertation Methodology Choice Among Doctoral Candidates At A Faith-Based University, Rebecca Lunde
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Limited research has investigated dissertation methodology choice and the factors that contribute to this choice. Quantitative research is based in mathematics and scientific positivism, and qualitative research is based in constructivism. These underlying philosophical differences posit the question if certain factors predict dissertation methodology choice. Using the theoretical framework of intersectionality and the multi-dimensional identity development model, this predictive, correlational study used archival data to determine if biological sex, ethnicity, age, or religious affiliation predicts dissertation methodology choice. A logistics regression analysis was used to review 398 doctoral dissertations and determine if any of the criterion variables predicted dissertation methodology …
