The Educational Journeys Of First-Generation College Women In Stem: A Grounded Theory Study, Susan Geier
The Educational Journeys Of First-Generation College Women In Stem: A Grounded Theory Study, Susan Geier
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the various factors that influenced these first-generation college women as they chose a college and selected a STEM major and subsequently persisted to upper level (junior/senior) status. Twenty-five first-generation college women in STEM majors who attended a research-intensive university in the Midwest were interviewed. Approaching this study using constructivist grounded theory provided the opportunity for deeper insights by examining data at a conceptual level while preserving the voices of the women in this study. The women faced numerous challenges on their journeys, yet they persisted. As the women in this study selected …
Post-Secondary Academic Self-Limitation Of Rural High School Students In Northeast Georgia, Jeffrey Lambert
Post-Secondary Academic Self-Limitation Of Rural High School Students In Northeast Georgia, Jeffrey Lambert
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the phenomenon of academic post-secondary self-limitation of rural high school students in northeast Georgia. The theory guiding this study was based upon self-determination theory, as described by Deci and Ryan (2008). Most high school students must make a decision as to whether or not they continue their education into the post-secondary years. This transcendental phenomenological study examined post-secondary academic self-limitation of high school students in rural, northeast Georgia. This type of phenomenology suggests that the whole of human experience is descriptive and leads to absolute knowledge (Moustakas, 1994). This approach was …
The Relationship Of Organizational Identity And Alumni Participation Interest Among Online, Non-Traditional, Undergraduate Students At A Southeastern Private Religious University, Mary Hendrick
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Colleges and universities depend heavily on alumni participation in the areas of financial contributions, positive advertising, and student recruitment. As higher education institutions increase the number of fully online programs, it is important to ensure that students feel a sense of connectedness to the university. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between non-traditional, online, undergraduate students’ sense of connectedness to their college and their subsequent interest in alumni participation after graduation. This research provides information that would fill a gap in the literature on the correlation between perceptions of identity when related to …
The Effects Of A Peer Feedback Treatment Package On Math Performance In Students With Moderate Cognitive Impairments, Allaina Sheltrown
The Effects Of A Peer Feedback Treatment Package On Math Performance In Students With Moderate Cognitive Impairments, Allaina Sheltrown
Masters Theses
Despite the increased demand for data collection in the special education settings, an agreed upon method for collecting data has yet to be identified. Two procedures that have demonstrated robust outcomes for collecting academic data for individual students are self-management and peer feedback. Self-management involves the student collecting measures on his or her own behavior(s). Peer feedback includes a student serving as a tutor and presenting academic materials and feedback to a tutee. Past research has yet to combine the two methods and include the methods to track and monitor Individual Education Program (IEP) goals. The current study aims to …
Guidelines For Interpretive Interview Fidelity In Mixed Methods Research Within The Context Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Amanda L. Garrett
Guidelines For Interpretive Interview Fidelity In Mixed Methods Research Within The Context Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Amanda L. Garrett
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Interviews fascinate and capture individuals’ attention. Researchers value the data they glean from interviews, while participants enjoy being asked to share their voices and opinions. Some of the most complex, stringent research designs are now being revised to include interviews, such as randomized controlled trials. But, how do we know that the interviews that are conducted are valid? We need to know more about how interviews are developed and delivered within the context of intervention research. Therefore, the aim of this methodological dissertation is to create a set of recommendations for interpretive interviews in a mixed methods randomized controlled trial. …
The Effects Of Missing Data Treatment On Person Ability Estimates Using Irt Models, Sonia Mariel Suarez Enciso
The Effects Of Missing Data Treatment On Person Ability Estimates Using Irt Models, Sonia Mariel Suarez Enciso
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Unplanned missing responses are common to surveys and tests including large scale assessments. There has been an ongoing debate on how missing responses should be handled and some approaches are preferred over others, especially in the context of the item response theory (IRT) models. In this context, examinees’ abilities are normally estimated with the missing responses generally ignored or treated as incorrect. Most of the studies that have explored the performance of missing data handling approaches have used simulated data. This study uses the SERCE (UNESCO, 2006) dataset and missingness pattern to evaluate the performance of three approaches: treating omitted …
Utilizing Reflective Narratives To Promote Academic Mindsets: Building Relationships, Developing Responsibility, Fostering Resilience, And Providing Relevance For Adolescents, Debra Gardner-Baasch
Utilizing Reflective Narratives To Promote Academic Mindsets: Building Relationships, Developing Responsibility, Fostering Resilience, And Providing Relevance For Adolescents, Debra Gardner-Baasch
All Theses And Dissertations
Preparing students for life after high school requires more than a focus on building content knowledge. With the goal of overall well-being for adolescents, education must expand beyond the traditional focus on academic excellence to develop the noncognitive factors that promote academic mindsets and build relationships, develop responsibility, foster resilience, and provide relevance for students. This research study investigates how reflective narratives can be utilized as universal interventions within personalized learning plans to foster the noncognitive factors of academic mindsets. Combining the research of social science about resilience, connectedness, and hopefulness with the research of social neuroscience, this study explores …
Integrity In And Beyond Contemporary Higher Education: What Does It Mean To University Students?, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim, Kathleen M. Quinlan
Integrity In And Beyond Contemporary Higher Education: What Does It Mean To University Students?, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim, Kathleen M. Quinlan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Research has focused on academic integrity in terms of students’ conduct in relation to university rules and procedures, whereas fewer studies examine student integrity more broadly. Of particular interest is whether students in higher education today conceptualize integrity as comprising such broader attributes as personal and social responsibility. We collected and analyzed qualitative responses from 127 students at the National University of Singapore to understand how they define integrity in their lives as students, and how they envisage integrity would be demonstrated in their lives after university. Consistent with the current literature, our data showed that integrity was predominantly taken …

Hispanic Bilingual Learners' Perceptions And Educational Experiences Of Spanish-Speaking In South Texas, Isela B. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
The present study focuses on a subset of data obtained from a larger interdisciplinary project, Proyecto Posible, which investigates how sociocultural and instructional factors predict positive outcomes among Spanish- and English-speaking Hispanic bilingual learners. As one part of Proyecto Posible, interviewers asked learners to speak in their language of preference about their experiences in school and feelings developed during interactions with others, as bilinguals. This study examines the qualitative component on bilingual learners’ perceptions of their own language proficiency in English and Spanish, perceptions of language use across a broad range of contexts including school, home, and community, …
The Relationship Between Online Classroom Incivility And Sense Of Community Of Online Undergraduate Students, John Spohn
The Relationship Between Online Classroom Incivility And Sense Of Community Of Online Undergraduate Students, John Spohn
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Incivility is not just bullying and physically threatening students. Uncivil behaviors include more mild forms of classroom disruption, including plagiarizing, posting terse responses, and continually asking for extensions for assignments. A student’s motivation for learning can be hampered, when subjected to incivility causing classroom disruptions. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between student incivility in the online learning environment, as scored by the Incivility in Online Learning Environments instrument, and the student’s sense of community, as measured by the Community Classroom scale. This quantitative study seeks to extend Tuckman’s model (1965) of the Theory of Group …

The Pyramid Model represents a comprehensive effort to provide teachers, caregivers, and families the tools and strategies needed to promote and support positive behavior, prevent challenging behavior, and address the social needs of all young children. The Pyramid Model emphasizes data-based decision making, employs evidence based prevention and intervention practices, and matches the intensity of behavior intervention to the intensity level of behavior for those children in need of individual support. The Pyramid Model provides a program- wide approach for use by early childhood teachers, caregivers, and families to support the social-emotional development of young children and decrease or …
Using Multigroup-Multiphase Latent State-Trait Models To Study Treatment-Induced Changes In Intra-Individual State Variability: An Application To Smokers' Affect, Christian Geiser, Daniel Griffin, Saul Shiffman
Using Multigroup-Multiphase Latent State-Trait Models To Study Treatment-Induced Changes In Intra-Individual State Variability: An Application To Smokers' Affect, Christian Geiser, Daniel Griffin, Saul Shiffman
Psychology Faculty Publications
Sometimes, researchers are interested in whether an intervention, experimental manipulation, or other treatment causes changes in intra-individual state variability. The authors show how multigroup-multiphase latent state-trait (MG-MP-LST) models can be used to examine treatment effects with regard to both mean differences and differences in state variability. The approach is illustrated based on a randomized controlled trial in which N = 338 smokers were randomly assigned to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) vs. placebo prior to quitting smoking. We found that post quitting, smokers in both the NRT and placebo group had significantly reduced intra-individual affect state variability with respect to the …

Emotional Intelligence And Graduates - Employers' Perspectives, Ailish Jameson, Aiden Carthy, Colm Mcguinness, Fiona Mcsweeney
Articles
Research has demonstrated that employers favour graduates who possess higher levels of emotional intelligence. Many
initiatives to increase students’ levels of EI have involved ‘whole school’ approaches, whereby generic EI skills programmes are
delivered to all students in a third level institute. This paper details an initial survey of employers’ (n = 500) opinions on the
importance and current level of graduates’ social and emotional competencies. The survey was completed across five sectors:
engineering, IT/computing, professional services (including accounting, business, finance, HR, law, retail), science (including
pharmaceutical and life), and social science which are identified growth industries in Ireland. It …

Perfectionism, Coping, And Underachievement In Gifted Adolescents: Avoidance Vs. Approach Orientations, Emily Mofield, Megan Parker Peters, Sumita Chakraborti-Ghosh
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
Perfectionism can influence how one approaches challenges and deals with setbacks, and, consequently, can inhibit or facilitate achievement. The present study (1) explored the relationship between Frost’s six dimensions of perfectionism and five types of coping strategies; (2) examined how dimensions of perfectionism predict coping in response to academic stress; and (3) investigated differences between gifted underachievers and other gifted students on perfectionism and coping among 130 American gifted students in grades 6–8. Results of stepwise regression models revealed approach coping was predicted by adaptive perfectionism (Positive Strivings-notably Organization), whereas avoidance coping (Internalizing, Externalizing, and Distancing) was predicted by various …

Working against the grain of history and contemporary assumptions about the nature of the field, the author makes a counterintuitive argument that decenters the child and brings forward the adult in early childhood education (ECE).
Educating The Under Empowered For Tolerance Of Satire And Participation In Young Democracies, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust
Educating The Under Empowered For Tolerance Of Satire And Participation In Young Democracies, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust
Conference Presentations
Drawing from experiences in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United States, a relationship appears to exist between tolerance for satire, freedom of expression, and academic freedom in higher education. Empowering the under empowered for participation in vibrant democracies and rational public discourse seems to coincide with an increasing tolerance for satire. We posit vibrant democracies must contain educational elements essential to empower the under empowered for democratic participation, in particular, to provide new democratic citizens with an understanding of the role of satire to cultivate rational public discourse in new democracies. New Southeast Asian democracies need growing evidence of dynamic strivings …

Becoming-Belieber: Girls' Passionate Encounters With Bieber Culture, Kortney Sherbine
Becoming-Belieber: Girls' Passionate Encounters With Bieber Culture, Kortney Sherbine
Occasional Paper Series
In this article, I draw on French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s (1987) notion of becoming to consider the ways in which these encounters with people, materials, and technologies are productive, creating space for Beliebers to come into relationship with one another and with popular culture in ways that are new and that I never could have anticipated during my more carefully organized and school-curriculum-driven interactions with girls during my six years as an elementary school teacher. Through my current research into young girls’ after-school fanaticism, I have been able to come to know girls differently than I knew …
Examining Student And Teacher Perceptions Of The Classroom Social Environment Across School Context: Effects Of Individual Factors, Keri Stewart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although teachers and students are the primary actors in the classroom environment, they often have different perceptions of the instructional and relational aspects of the classroom. Despite these differences, research indicates perceptions of the quality of the classroom social environment have implications for both student and teacher outcomes. Additionally, research has indicated the differences in perceptions occur not only between students and teachers, but also among individual students within classrooms. The extent and the manner in which these perceptions converge may vary across different class and school contexts. School and class context, as well as individual characteristics and beliefs have …

Counting On It : Early Numeracy Development And The Preschool Child, Kate Reid
Counting On It : Early Numeracy Development And The Preschool Child, Kate Reid
Student learning processes
Children think mathematically long before they start school. Before children start learning mathematics at school, they show informal understanding of many numeracy concepts. This is informal numeracy knowledge, that is, skills that children develop before starting school that do not depend on written mathematical notation (Purpura & Napoli, 2015). For example, children’s numeracy knowledge is evident in their developing counting skills. It is also evident in their capacity to compare, share, order, estimate and calculate different quantities. Fundamental skills in recognising and responding to numerical cues are apparent in infancy, and, at a very basic level, may be innate. Early …

Childhood Trauma : Developmental Pathways And Implications For The Classroom, Mollie Tobin
Childhood Trauma : Developmental Pathways And Implications For The Classroom, Mollie Tobin
Student learning processes
New understandings in developmental and neuroscience research have challenged popular ideas about trauma exposure and brain development during childhood. There is a general misconception that children are more resilient than adults to the effects of trauma and will ‘outgrow’ traumatic experiences (Lieberman & Knorr, 2007). However, these ideas are incorrect and are not supported by current research. In the classroom, children’s trauma symptoms may be understood as attentional deficits, learning disabilities, or behavioural or conduct problems (Downey, 2007). Researchers like Teicher et al. (2003) argue that trauma-informed behaviours are important coping mechanisms that a child may develop to survive extremely …
Conceptualizing Blended Learning Engagement, Lisa R. Halverson
Conceptualizing Blended Learning Engagement, Lisa R. Halverson
Theses and Dissertations
Learner engagement, or the involvement of the student's cognitive and emotional energy to accomplish a learning task, has been called "the holy grail of learning" (Sinatra, Heddy, & Lombardi, 2015, p. 1) because of its correlations to academic achievement, persistence, and satisfaction. In the 21st century, learning will be increasingly "blended," combining face-to-face with computer-mediated instruction. Research is already exploring learner engagement in blended contexts, but no theoretical framework guides inquiry or practice. Developing models and measures of the factors that facilitate learner engagement is important to the advancement of the domain. This multiple-article format dissertation addresses the theoretical gap …
