Various models have been used to describe the nature of the relation between reinforcement delay and relative response rate. Delay has been incorporated as one aspect of reinforcement within the matching law which states that the relative response rates in concurrent schedules will equal the relative immediacy of the reinforcement. A variation of matching applicable in concurrent-chain schedules states that the relative rates of responding in the initial links will match the relative reduction in the average delay to reinforcement correlated with the entry to each terminal link. The purpose of this study was to determine the applicability of Karon's Pathogenesis Index as a selection measure for persons entering graduate programs in the mental health field. The fundamental problem generating the research was the need for such selection indicators because of the present inadequacy of personality measures which adequately discriminate between those who have the capacity to become competent therapists and those who do not.

Analysis of the literature revealed many attempts to delineate those characteristics which defined a competent therapist. However, the results were mixed. Only one study VandenBos and Karon (1971) clearly identified a personality variable …

A Peer-Managed Contract Study Program For High School Students, Jane F. Stinson

A contract study center was implemented in a high school setting. The center employed peer-tutoring and behavioral contracting procedures. The program was designed to assist students with assigned tasks and to increase the efficiency with which in-school study periods were used. Students either were referred by teachers or volunteered to use the center. The project was implemented for ten weeks on a pilot basis. The results indicated that students used the center extensively and adequately adhered to behavior management requirements. A large proportion of contracts were completed demonstrating that the center procedures were effective in facilitating productivity. Staff evaluations showed …

A Comparison Of Speed And Accuracy In Addition Calculation For High And Low Achieving Math Students Using The Calculator, Conventional Algorithm And The Hutchings' “Low Stress Algorithm”, Edward S. Drew

This study was an attempt to compare the differential calculation power (speed plus accuracy) with addition for the conventional algorithm as compared with the Hutchings' low stress algorithm as compared to hand held calculators for high and low achievers with two levels of difficulty. Also, it is a systematic replication of Zoref's (1976) previous research. The subjects were eight third grade students, four male and four female, approximately nine years old. A multielement baseline design was used varying type calculation method within sessions and level of difficulty across sessions. An A-B-A-C counterbalanced reversal design was used with two groups to analyze the two components of Hutching's Low-Stress addition algorithm. Fourth grade students achieving 96% accuracy on a pretest of basic math facts were subjects of this study. Subjects were taught two new methods of computation; Hutchings' Low-Stress and the Conventional algorithm with a written record, along with reviewing the Conventional algorithm. Students were given worksheets containing fixed size addition problems and asked to complete as many as possible with a five-minute times session. It was the purpose of this study to investigate demographic and treatment/training, services provided variables which predict rehabilitation outcomes among clients with psychiatric disturbance. A population of 166 clients representing a "Mental Health" caseload for Fiscal Years 1977, 1978, and 1979 from the Kalamazoo, Michigan Bureau of Rehabilitation District office were studied. The population consisted of three sub-groups of psychotic, neurotic, and character disordered subjects.

A total of twenty demographic and eleven treatment/training independent variables were subjected to correlational and Step-Wise Regression methods of analyses with closure status (Status 26 and Status 28) used as the criterion.

A classroom management plan designed by the teacher was implemented in three high school sewing classes and measures of off-task behaviors were taken prior to, during, and after the implementation of the plan. The teacher designed the plan as part of the requirements for a graduate class that she was enrolled in at the time. It consisted of management objectives, monitoring progress on projects and cumulative points toward grades which were given contingent on amount of progress. A gradual decrease in off-task passive and disruptive behaviors was noticed in two of the classes where the plan was implemented. When follow-up …

Third-grade, regular education students participated in an experimental program that sought to examine the effects of self-recording on elementary student academic achievement. The experiment employed a multiple baseline design across 31 subjects, two settings, and curriculum (reading and mathematics). The subjects were introduced to the following conditions: Baseline, self-recording, baseline, self-recording, baseline. Results indicated that self-recording, alone, is an effective procedure for increasing academic achievement. Random responding, by some, indicated that further research is needed in this area.

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Beginning Reading Tutorial Program Administered By Elementary Aides, Reginald T. Hosner

This study illustrates that early elementary students who were lagging in basic reading skills learned at a faster-than-mainstream rate when taught by paraprofessional aides trained in administering the Beginning Reading tutorial program. After intensive training aides were shown to implement the tutorial program at a level considered to be above adequate. Mean gains made by tutored students in socially important (norm-referenced) reading skills were both statistically and educationally significant. A multiple-baseline analysis of program skill acquisition demonstrated that each program section implemented was effective in reaching its stated objectives. Control group pre-post-test comparisons of program skill acquisition further substantiate the …

The purpose of this study was to investigate mentoring relationships and to compare women's relationships with male and female mentors. Data were collected from 20 women (10 with male mentors and 10 with female mentors) with master's degrees or higher in social work, psychology, or counseling and working a minimum of 20 hours per week providing psychological services. Two instruments were administered to all of the subjects: the Standard Adjective Q Sort (SAQS), and the short form of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). A discrete-trial choice procedure, in which pigeons were exposed to one constant and one variable duration of reinforcement, was used to assess the effects of session-by-session manipulations in the variable reinforcement duration on the choice behavior of the subjects. Two groups of pigeons were used. Each subject in the first group was exposed to the same constant reinforcement duration (1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 sec), but different fixed-ratio trial completion requirements (5, 15 and 45). Programmed Review Tests In A Psi Course, Terry E. Mcsween

Two experiments demonstrated that carefully programmed review tests can result in 90% mastery of course objectives. Introductory psychology students participated in two group comparisons of the effectiveness of review tests versus no review tests. Review tests were programmed in that difficult items were repeated on several review tests. In both studies, students taking review quizzes outperformed students not taking review quizzes on final examinations. In addition, students not taking review quizzes were more likely to drop the course.
