Addressing The Needs Of Students With Foreign Language Anxiety, Amanda Marie Romero
Addressing The Needs Of Students With Foreign Language Anxiety, Amanda Marie Romero
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Foreign language anxiety is a condition in which students of foreign languages experience test anxiety, avoidance of communication, and fear of evaluation that become so inhibiting that their social and academic progress, along with their ability to become global citizens, is significantly stunted. This sequential mixed-methods research study was conducted so that foreign language educators might be better informed about how best to address foreign language anxiety within their classrooms. Because the concept of foreign language anxiety is based upon the idea of the foreign language classroom being uniquely taxing upon students, the stress-coping theory as well as the anxiety/uncertainty …
District Scores And Demographics As Predictors Of State Mathematics Assessment Scores, Carlos Alexander Bocel
District Scores And Demographics As Predictors Of State Mathematics Assessment Scores, Carlos Alexander Bocel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Prior research in mathematical assessments has indicated varying results of predictive variables and further research has been recommended to support students, parents, teachers, and school administration. The purpose of this research was to determine how well a student’s performance on a mathematics domain at the state level may be predicted based on student’s midyear and end of the year assessment scores, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The constructivist theoretical foundation was reviewed because of the impact that this theory has on the assessments being researched. Archival records (n = 100) for eighth grade students were received from suburban South Florida …
Striving For Homeostasis: Balancing The Inclusion Of Students With An Emotional/Behavioral Disorder, Rob Mcgarva
Striving For Homeostasis: Balancing The Inclusion Of Students With An Emotional/Behavioral Disorder, Rob Mcgarva
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social justice advocates have championed inclusive education, leading to its adoption in many jurisdictions. Despite policy changes designed to support learners with disabilities and research on inclusive education, students with an emotional/behavioral disorder (EBD) experience significantly poorer outcomes than their peers. Teachers often describe including this group of students as impossible and attempts to achieve inclusion often result in extreme stress. Research has identified proven inclusion strategies, but there are often problems with implementation in real-world settings. There is a research gap concerning how teachers understand and select interventions. Classic grounded theory methodology was used to identify the primary concern …
Hiring Manager Perceptions Of The Emotional Intelligence Skills Of Urban Community College Graduates, Janice Moore English
Hiring Manager Perceptions Of The Emotional Intelligence Skills Of Urban Community College Graduates, Janice Moore English
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEmotional intelligence (EI) skills are an important factor in the successful entry in the labor market of the fresh graduates of urban community colleges. Even though previous studies provided substantial evidence to the importance of these skills, these studies also recognized a lack of preparedness for the newly community college graduates and add to the voices of local business communities who manifest concern in this regard. The purpose of this basic qualitative research project was to explore local hiring manager perceptions of the EI skills of community college graduates they have hired for knowledge work roles. Goleman’s theory of EI …
Examining The Effectiveness Of Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Programs To Reduce Juvenile Recidivism, Monte Powell
Examining The Effectiveness Of Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Programs To Reduce Juvenile Recidivism, Monte Powell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Multiple community prevention programs have been established to help reduce delinquency, but further research is required to address the gaps that exist by measuring the effectiveness of state-sponsored (Community that Cares) and private programs (D.A.R.E.). The purpose of this study was to examine these programs, which may provide pathways toward a successful and fulfilling livelihood for juveniles by preventing them from reoffending. The research questions were aimed at determining the reasons why deviant behavior is increasing and identifying effective methods for improving organizational aftercare program efficiency to reduce juvenile delinquency and recidivism. Environmental and demographical variables were examined that are …
The Pre-School Teacher Experience Of Social Skills For Early Education Success, Cheryl Dorsey
The Pre-School Teacher Experience Of Social Skills For Early Education Success, Cheryl Dorsey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Pre-school is foundational to future academic success, and social skills have been recognized as a critical component of that foundation. How pre-school teachers facilitate social skills development is an area requiring further study. The purpose of this research was to describe the experience of social skills development from the perspective of early educators. Attachment and social learning theories were used as theoretical frameworks to explore how early education teachers describe the social skills for early education success in young children and how early education teachers facilitate the development of important social skills. This study used a generic, qualitative design …
Lived Experiences Of Adults Using Emotional Support Animals To Cope With Anxiety, Kenneth Patrick Fisher
Lived Experiences Of Adults Using Emotional Support Animals To Cope With Anxiety, Kenneth Patrick Fisher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Anxiety is a clinical disorder affecting nearly 40 million adults in the United States. Treating anxiety symptoms has been most effective when clinicians combine medication and therapy intervention. Still, treatments for anxiety varies among clinicians to determine which one may be the most effective. Emotional support animals (ESAs) provide one kind of intervention that clinicians use to treat anxiety in adults. However, existing research literature has not fully explored the phenomenon of lived experiences of coping with anxiety among adults with an ESA. Social cognitive theory provided a basis for this study’s theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon. This study …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social media has become an integral part of the education process, with educators incorporating social media platforms both actively and passively within the learning environment. Yet, the implementation and usefulness of social media in the online learning environment as an educational assistance tool have not been adequately investigated. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how the incorporation of social media into the online learning environment is experienced by university faculty and if their experiences of use or required changes in pedagogy for implementation are affecting their ability or desire to implement the new technology. Individual virtual interviews …
Impact Of Psychoeducation Program On Turkish Students' Negative Attitudes Towards Refugee Peers, Ali Çekiç, Zeynep Hamamcı
Impact Of Psychoeducation Program On Turkish Students' Negative Attitudes Towards Refugee Peers, Ali Çekiç, Zeynep Hamamcı
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
About 26% of the Syrian population in Turkey is made up of school-age children. In the 2017–2018 academic year, 608,000 Syrian students enrolled in the education system, and 50% attended temporary education centers established for only Syrian students, while the other half attended public schools with their Turkish peers. One of the main factors that complicate the adaptation process of Syrian refugee students who have come to a different culture and have been placed in a foreign education system is the discriminatory attitudes from the locals’ prejudices. Thus, in this study, a five-week psychoeducation program was developed and implemented by …

It also investigated if these effects were impacted by evaluation positivity. Additionally, the study explored if attitudes toward Ratemyprofessors.com was related to student gender, college class, and age. Participants were 73 undergraduates who were exposed to positive and negative evaluations about fictitious professors; participants were informed that the evaluations originated from RMP or university student evaluations of teaching. Evaluation positivity but not type influenced students’ intention to enroll in the professor’s course, but not how …
Changing Social Learning Theory Through Reliance On The Internet Of Things And Artificial Intelligence, Adam I. Attwood
Changing Social Learning Theory Through Reliance On The Internet Of Things And Artificial Intelligence, Adam I. Attwood
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
This paper examines the trend in the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and related computer-mediated teaching and learning. Implications for social learning theory are examined based on the concept of “cyborg” education through a variety of scholarly and popular media sources with implications for schools and teacher educators. Recommendations for teacher education are posited as the topic of technological mediation between people continues to change in relation to how education will likely need to adapt to provide a prosocial environment through technological mediation, though the social learning itself operates in different ways.

The achievement gap between African American and White students has been well documented. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether parental involvement in academics predicted academic motivation of fourth- and fifth-grade African American students in the Southwest United States. Social development theory provided the framework for the study. Survey data were collected from 43 students and 43 parents using the Parental Involvement Scale and the Children’s Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. A t test, linear regression, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated no significant difference between how parents and students perceived parental involvement …
How Do Parenting Styles Influence The Academic Performance Of African-American College Students At An Hbcu On The East Coast, Chaka P. Smith
How Do Parenting Styles Influence The Academic Performance Of African-American College Students At An Hbcu On The East Coast, Chaka P. Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Various studies have shown that the style of parenting has a significant influence on the academic performance and success of students. Furthermore, these studies have shown this evidence on academic performance in different contexts, that is at different grade levels and in different countries. The dearth of literature on the relationship between African-American parenting styles and academic performances is important as there is no universally acknowledged best way of parenting. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parenting styles and academic performance of African-American college students at historically black colleges and universities on the East …
The Relationship Between Preschool Teachers’ Knowledge And Experience To Emergent Literacy Assessment, Myra G. Crouch
The Relationship Between Preschool Teachers’ Knowledge And Experience To Emergent Literacy Assessment, Myra G. Crouch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is evidence to suggest that preschool teachers do not provide phonemic awareness instruction that supports the early literacy of young children before entering kindergarten. This study examined the relationship between preschool teachers’ content knowledge in early literacy, education level, and years of teaching experience to emergent literacy assessment; and if differences in students’ emergent literacy assessment varied across preschool program settings. The theoretical foundation for this study was based on 2 theories: ecological systems and cognitive stage development. Eighty-eight preschool teachers employed at local Head Start, childcare, and pre-kindergarten programs located in the Commonwealth of Virginia participated in this …

Emotional Intelligence, Self-Directed Learning, And Online Success In Adult Learners: A Mediation Model, Amanda C. Coté
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Online education has been established as a viable option for adult learners. More recently, it has been adopted by many institutions as a critical component in their long-term planning and success. Despite consistent growth rates in online enrollment, and the advantages to online learning, attrition rates for online courses remain higher than traditional (ground) courses. Bar-On’s theory of emotional intelligence (EI) and Knowles’ self-directed learning (SDL) theory have been positively linked with online academic performance and identified as predictors of learning online and life success. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to explore EI and SDL as predictors …
The Impact Of The Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Compassion Satisfaction On The Professional Social Worker, Elaine Franks Carter
The Impact Of The Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Compassion Satisfaction On The Professional Social Worker, Elaine Franks Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few studies have provided empirical data on the relationship between compassion satisfaction and self-care agency in professionals like the professional social worker, even though compassion satisfaction could be a prime motivator for continued work in the field of social work. To address this gap, this quantitative study addressed the research question asking if there was a statistically significant linear relationship between the exercise of self-care agency and compassion satisfaction. This study centered on theories related to the compassion satisfaction and the compassion satisfaction/compassion fatigue theories of Stamm (2010), and self-care agency and the theories of self-care/self-care deficit of Orem (1980; …

Perception Of Parents And Teachers About Social Media Communication Effecting Children’S Attitudes Toward Schooling In Deployed Military Families, Luther Mike Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Military families represent an under-researched and unique population in U.S. society. Little is known about the effects that extended separations have on military families and/or about the daily challenges such families face. This basic qualitative inquiry examined military spouses’ perception of how social media and digital face-to-face communication with deployed parents influenced their children’s behaviors and attitudes toward school. It also examined the perceptions of teachers who teach or taught military children whose parents were deployed. The study’s conceptual framework consisted of Bandura’s social cognitive theory of self-efficacy and Ainsworth and Bowlby’s attachment theory. The research questions for this study …
Age Differences In Effect Of Collaboration Of Care Activities On Student Behaviors, Ronda Lynn Stevens
Age Differences In Effect Of Collaboration Of Care Activities On Student Behaviors, Ronda Lynn Stevens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over 18 million children in the US have mental health problems and 70% receive the care in the education sector. The Collaboration of Care (CoC) approach is widely used to address these needs. However, the body of knowledge to date does not focus on relationships between the use of a CoC in a school environment nor examines school-based outcomes. This study examined a specific CoC, called the Collaboration of Services for Youth (COSY), to see if there was a positive association between participation in COSY and changes in attendance, behavior, and academic performance among 52 public-school students, ages 5-16, and …
Self-Care Practices, Work Experience, Educational Setting, And Burnout Among School Counselors, Paul Sylvester-Nwosu
Self-Care Practices, Work Experience, Educational Setting, And Burnout Among School Counselors, Paul Sylvester-Nwosu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractSchool counselors should be well-adjusted in their personal and professional lives and possess a keen, accurate perception of their self-care practices. However, people drawn to careers in school counseling are often at risk of developing burnout due to high professional demands and limited resources supporting their self-care and well-being. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate the relationship between the independent variables of self-care practices, years of work experience, and educational settings and the dependent variable of levels of burnout among practicing school counselors in K-12 suburban educational settings in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. …
Servant Leadership And Job Satisfaction As Moderated By Workplace Spirituality, Shellie Kae Mcnabb
Servant Leadership And Job Satisfaction As Moderated By Workplace Spirituality, Shellie Kae Mcnabb
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Job satisfaction has been the focus of scholars for decades. Employers must create a workplace where the employee receives more than a paycheck. Servant leaders speak directly to the decisive leader-follower relationship. Workplace spirituality is a place where the employee is a valued part of the membership. Combining the three elements may answer the current problem of the aligning of business goals with employee needs. Existing research supports that servant leadership enhances job satisfaction. Researchers have demonstrated that the employee lead by example is more content. Missing are the contexts where these workers excel. The purpose of this study was …
Motivators That Influence Canine Handlers To Volunteer In Animal Assisted Activities, Gina Marie Fisher
Motivators That Influence Canine Handlers To Volunteer In Animal Assisted Activities, Gina Marie Fisher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Animal-assisted activity (AAA) programs support various mental health or health-related concerns. Little research has studied why individuals are motivated to volunteer in animal-assisted therapy programs; no studies have addressed what motivational factors influence individuals to become an AAA volunteer. This quantitative investigation used functional motivational theory and attachment theory to uncover the motivations of these volunteers. Certain motives were primed with cues to understand key influences among the 186 individuals selected by convenience sampling through a therapy animal organization. Data were collected through an online survey in which the participants answered a series of essay type questions, some of which …
Mental Health Needs In Schools As Predictors Of Burnout In School Counselors, Sondra Junek
Mental Health Needs In Schools As Predictors Of Burnout In School Counselors, Sondra Junek
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found an increasing number of students with mental health issues, and
school counselors are often the first resource available to students. School counselors are
faced with many job duties including supporting students’ academic, career, and
emotional needs. Maintaining these duties of school counseling can increase stress and
lead to burnout. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine mental health
needs, mental health knowledge, and mental health skills as predictors of each of the
three subscales of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal
accomplishment) among early, middle, and late career school counselors. Lazarus and
Folkman’s transactional theory …
Academic Incivility: Can The Dark Triad Personality Traits Predict Academic Entitlement?, Melissa M. Foley
Academic Incivility: Can The Dark Triad Personality Traits Predict Academic Entitlement?, Melissa M. Foley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Academic entitlement is a view held by students that can cause dissent and student incivility. Academic entitlement can be driven by various factors, including the personality traits of the Dark Triad (personality traits of Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism). Other researchers have examined the relationship between these traits and academic entitlement, but further research on this subject is needed. Adams’ equity theory, which proposes that people experience distress when they identify as either under- or over rewarded individuals, provided the theoretical foundation for this study. Using a quantitative approach, 160 participants were recruited using online methods and asked to complete a …

The United States has yet to reach the White House’s 2020 goal of attaining the top international ranking in college degree attainment among young adults. Researchers have investigated the academic performance variables associated with timely degree attainment for first-year college students. Prior research has indicated that poorly motivated students are likely to struggle academically, experience academic stress, and drop out of school. However, it remains unknown which types of motivation significantly affect academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to better understand which Reiss basic desires of motivation predict undergraduate academic achievement. An additional purpose of this study was …
Parent-Teacher Relationships Of Students Diagnosed With Autism, Job Burnout, And Stress As Predictors Of Teacher Self-Efficacy, Sohna Shook
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Excessive workload, personal stress, and a lack of resources are some of the factors that contribute to teacher stress and burnout. One third of new teachers quit the teaching profession within their first 3 years, half leaving within 5 years, and 10% quitting every year after that. Research has identified a relationship between work stress and burnout among teachers. However, this relationship has not been explored among teachers who have students diagnosed with autism in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher job-related stress, burnout, quality of parent-teacher relationships, and teacher self-efficacy among …
Fostering Motivation When Virtually Mentoring Online Doctoral Students, Crissie Jameson, Kelly Torres
Fostering Motivation When Virtually Mentoring Online Doctoral Students, Crissie Jameson, Kelly Torres
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Online learning in higher education has become commonplace as more working adults and nontraditional aged students return to pursue advanced degrees. Graduate education, specifically, has grown in recent years (Allen & Seaman, 2014), including doctoral degrees. Pursuing a doctoral degree requires writing a culminating paper (e.g., dissertation, doctoral study, capstone study). Writing and conducting such a study requires support and mentorship from faculty of the program. Establishing a positive relationship in which the student feels supported by the mentor is crucial to encourage dialogue and motivation throughout the process. In this case study, online doctoral students’ perceptions of autonomy, competence, …
Testing The Psychometric Properties Of The Modeling Self-Efficacy Scale, Anu Sharma, Stephen J. Pape, Jonathan Templin
Testing The Psychometric Properties Of The Modeling Self-Efficacy Scale, Anu Sharma, Stephen J. Pape, Jonathan Templin
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The Modeling Self-Efficacy Scale was developed to measure middle and high school students’ confidence in understanding and solving modeling tasks. The scale was administered to 225 eighth- and ninth-grade students. Participants read modeling tasks adapted from Programme for International Student Assessment’s 2003 problem-solving assessment and rated their confidence on a 100-point self-efficacy scale. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that modeling self-efficacy is a unidimensional construct, best elicited by a repeated-measures-style survey design in which participants responded to the same self-efficacy items across multiple modeling problems. The omega reliability coefficient for the scale was .88. The findings suggest that the Modeling Self-Efficacy …
Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado
Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Downsizing, realignment, and closure of military bases have forced many low-skilled, blue-collar federal employees into involuntary job loss and job transition. The impact of involuntary job loss on blue-collar workers has been linked to stress and other adverse psychological effects. There is gap in the literature regarding the lived experiences of federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study was to examine lived experiences of job loss and job transition for federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. Schlossberg’s transition theory provided a conceptual framework for the study. Ten ex-federal blue-collar …
