"Ichthyosis: A manual For Teachers" addresses the needs of children born with a rare, congenital skin disorder. Not unlike children with cancer, asthma or diabetes, children with ichthyosis have special needs regarding their physical comfort and safety in the educational setting. This manual addresses these needs along the developmental continuum. Using Erik Erikson's eight stages of man as a guideline, this manual addresses the physical, medical and psychosocial needs of the ichthyotic child from infancy through adolescence.

Analogical Processing Skills In Three Modalities In Fifth, Eighth, And Eleventh Graders, Amy Sirrae Cashen

This study examined the ability of fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders to complete multiple modality analogy tasks. Three groups, for a total of 201 subjects--68 fifth graders, 66 eighth graders, and 77 eleventh graders--solved word, picture, and figure analogies. A significant difference was found in the performance of the three groups, indicating that analogical processing skills increase with age. No significant difference was found between males and females on the combined analogy tasks. A significant difference was found for modality, indicating that the three sets of analogies were different in difficulty. The grade-by-modality interaction also was found to be significant, …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Elaine Sheats

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between internal locus of control and academic achievement in third and fifth grade students. The Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale was used to determine a locus of control score for each subject. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Form 8 was used to obtain an achievement score for each subject. The study implemented a correlational research design. The Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the test scores. Results indicated a significant relationship between the internal dimension of locus of control and academic achievement.

Detrimental Student Behaviors As Perceived By Elementary Teachers, Jimmy D. Lindsey, Greg H. Frith

The purpose of the is study was to identify a common core of behaviors as perceived by elementary teachers who work with socially and emotionally disordered (S-ED) students. Fifty elementary teachers were randomly selected from a pool of 525 teachers to participate by giving perceptions. The teachers rank ordered ten general, ten socialization, and ten communication asocial behaviors in terms of these behaviors' detrimental effect on instruction. The behaviors ranked as the most detrimental 9the common core) were those describing active and/or aggressive actions. Reduction Of Aggressive Behavior Of A Preschool Child Using Extinction And Teacher Attention Procedures, Greg Randle

The subject was a 2 and a half-year-old male who engaged in a high rate of aggressive behavior that appeared to be maintained by teacher reprimands and physical contact. An extinction procedure in which all aggressive behavior directed toward peers was ignored was used in conjunction with teacher attention directed to the victim. Teacher attention was also used to positively reinforce the subject for interaction with peers. These procedures reduced the subject's aggressive behavior to a much lower rate. This study was designed to measure the effect of the Home Start Project upon school achievement as measured by the third grade scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The non-randomized posttest-only control group design was utilized in this research project. Subject selection consisted of those forty-four subjects for whom prior comparisons had been drawn concerning Horne Start subjects. However, it was possible to locate only 31 Home Start subjects (22 black and 9 white) and 31 of their older and Non-Home Start siblings (22 black and 9 white). Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree in 1932, examines the relative importance of heredity and environment in shaping human development across the life course. Drawing on educational psychology literature by Starch, Thorndike, Averial, James, Horne, and Dom Thomas Verner Moore, the thesis surveys competing theoretical positions on whether inherited traits or external conditions constitute the greater force in determining individual character, intelligence, and social behavior. The central argument of the thesis holds that heredity and environment are mutually dependent and cannot be meaningfully separated: instincts provide the …
