The content areas that get most attention in an elementary classroom include mathematics and English/Language Arts (ELA), and little time is devoted to other content areas like social studies. Preservice elementary teachers can learn to maximize instructional time by integrating social studies content in the ELA block. Using counternarratives, preservice teachers can learn to use children’s literature to teach multiple perspectives to the dominant narrative in the textbooks. This article shares strategies to present counternarratives and examples of children’s literature that can be used in an elementary classroom.

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Abstract: Much of the existing research focuses on the questions teachers ask students, but there is very little information about the questions students ask. The main purpose of this research was to explore ways to engage students in asking their own questions in the learning of mathematics, and to create a scale to help educators categorize the types of questions students ask. We created and used inquiry-based, funds of knowledge-rich lessons with productive struggle opportunities to promote curiosity (Calleja, 2016) and elicit student questions to develop and test our question categorization scale.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact the project-based learning model had on student learning and engagement by examining the perceptions of parents, teachers, school administration, and district patrons of the project-based learning methods implemented at an intermediate STEAM school. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to explore the perspectives of Arkansas secondary school administrators regarding the use of co-teaching to deliver special education (SPED) content instruction. Individual interviews and a focus group discussion was used to collect data from nine Arkansas secondary administrators. The findings of this study suggest that Arkansas secondary administrators perceive co-teaching as a beneficial method to deliver SPED content instruction if the co-teaching pair has sufficient training and co-planning time. Additionally, these Arkansas administrators noted a variety of factors influencing the implementation of co-teaching, which include the following: budgets, teacher quality and …

However, motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic has not been studied in detail due to the recency of events. To understand how the pandemic impacted student motivation, this study applied the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in understanding how motivation functions through three pieces: autonomy, competence, and relatedness (Deci & Ryan, 1985). Students from lower income brackets have a higher risk of not completing school. School misbehavior, school mobility, grade retention, homework completion, school safety, attendance, academic self-efficacy, academic engagement, and academic expectations were all uniquely related to grade point average and experiencing two of the risk factors was predictive of academic failure. The developed sessions were based on self-determination theory and motivational interviewing skills. The sessions include strategies to help with organization, time-management, and self-advocacy. Many of these visitors have been school children on field trips. It is essential for introductory level chemistry students to understand atomic models and how atoms interact to form chemical bonds. The tactile model in this article utilizes marbles to represent subatomic particles, a cup to represent the nucleus and wooden rings to simulate the electron orbitals. These inexpensive items can be combined to construct models in which students can build foundational knowledge of atomic structure and how subatomic particles interact. Archival literacy has become a popular mode of literacy in the last ten years, given that archival research is not the exclusive purview of historians. Given the amount of open collections and exhibits, the possibility of teaching archival literacy skills is more accessible than ever. Importantly, archival literacy asks us to critically read against the common narrative that archival objects are pure evidence and archivists are neutral agents. This article describes a practical way to teach student entrepreneurs to search and use market data for business startup plans. The conventional way of teaching students to find articles and business intelligence based on a class assignment can be challenging for many students without an academic business background. This library instruction approach sequentially uses three databases enriched with business data and infographics to support the development of critical thinking for student entrepreneurs. It teaches entrepreneurial personality support, analysis, visualization, and market mapping.

Academic dishonesty occurs in higher education. Students who choose to cheat will find a way no matter the assessment type, learning environment modality, and deterrents. Academic integrity in online assessments has been prevalent even before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to the recent increase in online learning modalities, cheating is at the top of faculty concerns, and many instructors believe that online assessments open the door for cheating.
