Effective Differentiation Strategies For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Emily C. Devroy Jan 2020

Effective Differentiation Strategies For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Emily C. Devroy

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 sought to improve academic achievement for every child in the United States, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or background. Since NCLB, educators and researchers have given differentiation greater attention with the hope that it will provide effective strategies for ensuring that every child reaches their full potential. Differentiation, however, requires significant resources; many teachers report feeling overwhelmed when creating a differentiated classroom without proper administrative support and collaboration. This literature review seeks to answer the question of which differentiation strategies are most likely to increase student achievement by examining the research regarding …

Proactive Strategies For Managing Problem Behavior In Secondary Classrooms, Laura Amelia Elder Jan 2020

Proactive Strategies For Managing Problem Behavior In Secondary Classrooms, Laura Amelia Elder

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Problem behaviors in the classroom can negatively impact all students in that particular setting, and result in work-related stress and reduced well-being for teachers. Many teachers rely on public reprimands or exclusionary discipline methods such as office referrals, detention, or suspension to manage student misbehavior. These strategies, however, can damage student-teacher relationships and perpetuate problem behavior. Research reviewed suggests that proactive behavior management strategies are key to preventing misbehavior from occurring in the first place and increasing academic engagement. The purpose of this thesis is to review literature related to proactive strategies for managing problem behavior in secondary classrooms. Three …

Proactive Classroom Management Strategies In U.S. Middle And Secondary Education, Brittany R. Graves

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of classroom management strategies has great importance for middle and secondary teachers. The present research aims to consolidate findings on evidence-based, proactive classroom management strategies for adolescents that can be effectively used by middle and high school teachers of all experience levels. Results suggest that relationship building, antecedent attention, positive verbal feedback, opportunities to respond, proactive discipline, and parental involvement increase engagement and decrease disruptive behavior in middle and secondary classrooms. Veteran, new, and preservice teachers should evaluate and update their classroom management strategies to reflect current, evidence-based practices.

Teaching English To Adolescent Language Learners, Carmen L. Gunderson Jan 2020

Teaching English To Adolescent Language Learners, Carmen L. Gunderson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teaching English to multilingual adolescent learners has its challenges. Pedagogy for English language learners is based on outdated language learning research. Curriculum available for the English language teacher (ELT) has relied on research related to monolinguals acquiring first language (L1). For the practitioner, these resources were not proving themselves to be effective in the classroom. The practitioner came to the literature review with these questions: What does the current brain research tell us about the language learning process for adolescents 10-24 years of age? What influence does L1 literacy skills have on the second language (L2) learning experience? What are …

Girls In Career And Technical Education Affects Women In Business, Rachel B. Hari

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this literature review is to understand why fewer girls than boys enter nontraditional careers. Most girls have opportunities to pursue business and different career and technical education (CTE) courses but girls are still lacking in number. Some girls do not choose these CTE courses because they feel like they have been unfairly stereotyped and experience unnoticed gender biases. Girls also feel like they do not have women to look up to in business because there are few female leaders in the corporate world. There are myths that women do not translate to business leaders because of the …

Critical Thinking In Civic Education, Allen G. Hubert

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given the consistent call for and appreciation of the need for critical thinking in education, closer examination of leading approaches shows this curriculum is diverse in its framing, its definition, its goals, and in classroom implementation. Yet, critical thinking remains important for higher order thinking skills and tools to be effective decision makers. Hubert does a meta analysis of critical thinking definitions and implementation across the globe finding common ground and best practice in critical thinking education leading towards the current framework of Active Citizenship. How to implement it effectively remains in question and Hubert begins to outline differences and …

Federal Regulation On The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities By The Use Of Accommodations And Modifications, Benjamin C. Isham

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When the federal government enacted No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2001, it set the stage to provide inclusion to all students regardless of their academic or physical abilities in the classroom. However, there is often confusion between the federal and state governments, administrators, and teachers regarding what it entails and what accommodations are being recommended, and which ones work in the classroom. An examination of these levels is done to see where these confusions and interpretations arise when it comes to applying these in the field. The challenge is the federal government’s legal authority and applying it in a …

How Implementing Wicor In High School Classrooms Encourages Critical Thinking Skills And Promotes Life-Long Learning, Tiffany N. Johnson Jan 2020

How Implementing Wicor In High School Classrooms Encourages Critical Thinking Skills And Promotes Life-Long Learning, Tiffany N. Johnson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Educators and policymakers have the responsibility of preparing students to be college and career ready, but many students entering postsecondary education are having to enroll in remedial courses to fill the learning gap created by secondary education. High school teachers need to shift their instructional mindset to include a more student-centered learning environment that promotes the learning of advanced literacy skills that should be explicitly taught across all content area classrooms. Teachers should model reading comprehension strategies in order to promote critical thinking and increase awareness of domain specific knowledge. Frequent, and purposeful writing activities should also be incorporated into …

Deficit Discourse And Its Effects On English Learners, Amber Leigh Lewis

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discourse has a profound effect on all students; it affects their sense of self, their beliefs, and their actions. Specifically, teachers who employ a deficit discourse in regard to English Learners (ELs) view ELs as less capable and more delinquent than their mainstream peers. In this paper, I seek to answer three questions: Why does deficit discourse exist in schools? How does it affect ELs? And, what can be done about it? Research suggests that deficit discourse is largely rooted in power dynamics between teachers and students, and its effects on ELs can be damaging. To change deficit discourse, teachers …

Standards-based reforms have been shown to have a positive impact on teachers’ instruction by helping to focus teaching. Standards-based reforms have also been shown to increase fairness in the classroom by allowing teachers to only focus on student achievement. Additionally, standards-based reforms help to improve the accuracy of grades and student achievement. Also, standards-based reforms impact the curriculum and the assessment of students. The assessment and grading of students also is shifted to focus exclusively on student achievement under standards-based reforms. These reforms are not without challenges, as …

Engaging Millennial Students Through Community-Engaged Experiential Learning, Maureen Andrade, Jonathan H. Westover

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Millennial students and workers are high-achieving, have a strong desire for ongoing personal and professional development, and tend to be invested in making a sustainable impact on society and in the communities in which they live and work. One avenue to engage these students is community-engaged experiential learning (or service learning). While service learning is not new, this “civically-engaged” pedagogy has increased in popularity and usage. It provides meaningful community-service opportunities that simultaneously teach civic responsibility and encourage life-long civic engagement, while also providing significant real-life, hands-on learning of important skills and vital social understanding. This quantitative study examines the …

Through their commitment to following best practices in educator preparation and ongoing collaboration with many stake holders, the West Texas A & M University’s (WTAMU’s) Educator Preparation Program (EPP) faced the challenges of the COVID-19 …

Chicago Semester Experiential Learning Amid Covid-19, Rebecca Burwell, Jonathan Brooks, Mackenzi Huyser

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Excerpt

Chicago Semester is an experiential education program that was founded 45 years ago by six private, faith-based colleges in the Midwest. During the spring semester of 2020, we were serving 56 traditional-aged undergraduate students. These students came from 16 different colleges with student bodies between 1000-4000 students, mainly located in rural or suburban communities. On March 13, 2020, we made the decision to conclude our in-person programming because of COVID-19. Students moved home and the program continued remotely for the duration of the semester.
