Using 3d Models And Virtual Reality To Foster Learning Of Carcass Anatomy, Renae Sieck
Using 3d Models And Virtual Reality To Foster Learning Of Carcass Anatomy, Renae Sieck
UCARE: Research Products
In meat science and carcass anatomy, an often-debated topic is the methodology educators should follow for effective and efficient learning of carcass anatomy among students. Many traditional learning environments utilize monolithic methods for teaching anatomy that fail to engage students or pedagogically enhance their cognitive development to the fullest potential. Access is also limited because of the need for specialized facilities’ and equipment. We are interested in understanding and measuring the success of learning tools such as Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D Visualization in student learning. Our study’s results would be useful to indicate if student attitudes and student performance …
Lumos Literacy: Utilizing Harry Potter As A Guide For English Language Learners, Kayla Punt
Lumos Literacy: Utilizing Harry Potter As A Guide For English Language Learners, Kayla Punt
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This research paper and project looks at teaching literacy in a 9th grade Standard English classroom with accommodations for high-level English Language Learners through JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It explores three schools of thought surrounding ESL education: transitional bilingual education, developmental bilingual education, and two-way immersion, and then uses this information to guide a full unit plan, complete with assessments, a lesson map for 20 days, and two appendixes of lesson plans. Drawing inspiration from Parker Palmer (1997), Lourdes Ortega (2013), and Kylene Beers (2003), the unit focuses on the engaging elements of Harry Potter …

In Their Own Words: The Significance Of Participant Perceptions In Assessing Entomology Citizen Science Learning Outcomes Using A Mixed Methods Approach, Louise I. Lynch, Jenny Dauer, Wayne A. Babchuk, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Doug Golick
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A mixed methods study was used to transcend the traditional pre-, post-test approach of citizen science evaluative research by integrating adults’ test scores with their perceptions. We assessed how contributory entomology citizen science affects participants’ science self-efficacy, self-efficacy for environmental action, nature relatedness and attitude towards insects. Pre- and post-test score analyses from citizen scientists (n = 28) and a control group (n = 72) were coupled with interviews (n = 11) about science experiences and entomological interactions during participation. Considering quantitative data alone, no statistically significant changes were evident in adults following participation in citizen science when compared to …
Rethinking Visual Communication Curriculum: The Success Of Emporium Style, Adam Wagler, Katie Krcmarik, Alan Eno
Rethinking Visual Communication Curriculum: The Success Of Emporium Style, Adam Wagler, Katie Krcmarik, Alan Eno
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
The College of Journalism and Mass Communications faced challenges with budget and faculty resources causing a bottleneck, in the beginning, visual communications courses for the College. In the fall of 2016, a solution was implemented in the form of an emporium style teaching model, where students can seek help on projects and collaborate with peers on projects. The program is the first-of-its-kind giving students experience with the technologies and techniques needed to be powerful and effective storytellers. Students leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems, with the help of faculty available in a learning …

Cybersecurity Threats & Challenges, Jr Nobles
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Cyberattacks have brought a paradigm shift in how we secure & protect information. Today, NATO ranks attacks from phishing & malware among their greatest concerns. These attacks are attractive to hackers, who find them to be cheap, hard to track, and even harder to attribute. As budgets rise and fall, awareness of cyber threats and challenges has never been more critical. Theft of intellectual property, loss of research, and attacks on the reputation of the University are among the challenges managed by our team. Join the UNL Information Security team for a talk about today’s cyber threats and how they …

Enhancing The Quality Of Online Teaching Via Collaborative Course Development, B. Jean Mandernach, Steve Mcgahan
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Collaborative course development offers a host of opportunities for academic departments to ensure consistency, maximize resource allocation, and increase scalability of online course offerings. By utilizing a collective design model, a team of content experts (i.e., department faculty), curriculum specialists, instructional designers, and instructional technologists can collaborate to develop dynamic online courses that can be taught by multiple instructors over successive terms. The key to a successful collaborative course design lies in an increased up-front investment of time and resources to ensure a well-designed course that aligns learning objectives, instructional content, activities, and assessments in a manner that is uniquely …
Scaling Up Student Assessment: Issues And Solutions, Paul Van Vliet
Scaling Up Student Assessment: Issues And Solutions, Paul Van Vliet
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Online courses permit the enrollment of large numbers of students, which forces instructors to address the problem of providing valid and reliable assessments of student performance on a large scale. This paper examines two broad approaches for scaling up student assessment and feedback in higher education: automated assessment techniques and distributed assessment methods.

Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: The Honors Professional Development Portfolio: Claiming The Value Of Honors For Improvement, Tenure, And Promotion
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
All of us working in honors face a similar challenge when we are asked to account for the value of our efforts as teachers or leaders in our honors programs or colleges. Much of what we do is invisible to all but the most discerning and appreciative eyes: hours spent designing new courses and pedagogical approaches; advising students on curricular, career, and personal matters; coordinating faculty and student development opportunities; forging beneficial alliances across campus to grow and strengthen our institutional areas; collaborating with students on research projects; drafting grants and other proposals; maintaining alumnae relations; leading students to academic …
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Constructing An Honors Composition Course To Support A Research-Based Honors Curriculum
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
As the research focus of post-secondary honors education intensifies, the honors composition course can be designed to support this mission by introducing students to discipline-specific research tools and argumentation styles while building an interdisciplinary community of scholars who can debate issues both within and outside their fields. Not only do students develop skills in selecting, reading, and writing researched academic arguments, but they also gain insight into the publication and presentation processes as related to professional development in a given discipline. Students learn how publishers and editors serve as gatekeepers of what is considered knowledge in a field, how researchers …
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Building And Enhancing Honors Programs Through Faculty Learning Communities
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Many important institutional concerns and opportunities, observes John R. Cosgrove, involve honors programs and colleges, such as their impact on undergraduate academic performance, retention, and graduation (Cosgrove). Another consideration for honors programs is the area of curriculum revision or enhancement, for example, increasing ethical inquiry across courses in the honors curriculum. Others involve inspiring faculty to create new honors courses, adjusting criteria for student requirements and recognition, initiating joint enterprises with liberal education and STEM programs, and advancing the role of the honors curriculum in advocating change across the institution. These opportunities beckon solutions that can be investigated and proposed …

Improving Online Learning With Learning Analytics, Martonia Gaskill, Phu Vu
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
The overarching goal of this presentation is to discuss the use of learning analytics in Canvas to track and predict students’ performances and to provide timely support for success in online courses. In addition, the issue of students’ privacy in online courses will also be reviewed through preliminary survey data. According to Horizon Report 2016, learning analytics is an educational application of web analytics aimed at learner profiling, a process of collecting and analyzing details of individual student performances in their online courses. Learning analytics has developed in three stages, moving from an emphasis on hindsight to foresight. The first …

Group Portfolios as a Gateway to Creativity, Collaboration & Synergy in an Environment Course
Yankee Hill I
Katherine Nashleanas (UNL)
Recent studies have suggested the world students are facing today is moving so fast that the professions and skills they are training for now might be obsolete by the time they graduate. As a result, students in the 21st century need to think more flexibly, innovatively and creatively as well as practice in collaboration, negotiation and teamwork. With an entry-level class of 49 students in a hybrid course, groups were assigned with a semester portfolio project on the general topic …

Creating A Student Success Center: Transitioning Graduate Students Into An Online Community Of Learners Through A Collaborative Approach, Brian Wilson, Christina W. Yao, Erica Defrain, Andrew Cano
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Community building and socialization are key to success in graduate education, particularly as students are facing two new realities at the start of their academic careers: shifting identity into becoming graduate students 2 and scholars, and developing online learning competency. As a way to address these challenges, the EDAD Student Success Center was created in Fall 2016 to increase interactions with faculty and peers as a way to develop a community of learners. This collaborative project included interest and effort from departmental faculty and staff, colleagues from the UNL Libraries, and current graduate students representing the EDAD Graduate Student Association …

A Course Delivery Evolution: Moving From Lecture To Online To A Flipped Classroom, Kim Michael, Tanya Cluster
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
This presentation will focus on the findings of a research study designed to evaluate different modes of course delivery in a Genitourinary Sonography course. The purpose of the study was two-fold, first to determine if the mode of delivery (traditional, on-line, flipped) affects student satisfaction in a genitourinary sonography course and second to evaluate overall course outcomes.
The study reviewed current data over a 9-year period from a single sonography course offered in the spring semester of a 12-month Bachelor of Science health professions program. During the first three years (2010- 2012), the course was offered in a traditional, lecture …
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Foreword, Richard Badenhausen
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Foreword, Richard Badenhausen
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
When I first stumbled upon honors education over two decades ago while team-teaching a seminar called “Poetry and the Condition of Music,” it was the freedom inside and outside the classroom that most caught my attention. Sprung from the shackles of my usual British Literature survey, one in which students trudged through a rigid chronology of canonical authors, I was free to design a course with the university’s choral director that put ancient oral poets in dialogue with rap musicians; that explored the collaboration between W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten; that set Langston Hughes against crucial jazz influences. Additionally, …

Scholarship on teaching and learning has exploded in volume and influence in recent decades, providing all of us who are dedicated to improving our roles as professors with a dizzying array of books and other resources. Faculty development as a specific area of study and professional growth and centers designed to promote and support better teaching (often called CETLs for Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning or CATLs for Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning) have multiplied on campuses around the globe.
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Teaching For Learning In Honors Courses: Identifying And Implementing Effective Educational Practices
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Teaching and learning are interesting endeavors. As faculty members, we spend a great deal of time working with students to help them understand a concept, a fact, or a point of view, but we often do not spend equal time better understanding and improving teaching and learning. Time and again, individual educators note that they were trained in a given discipline, not in the process of teaching. In most states, it takes more credentialing in teaching to become a first-grade instructor in math than it does to teach a graduate seminar in psychology. Because of the assumption that those who …
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Using Student-Generated Questions To Promote Learning
Breaking Barriers In Teaching And Learning: Using Student-Generated Questions To Promote Learning
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Faculty who teach gifted honors students often ask themselves, “How can I ask questions that foster higher-order thinking?” “How can I get more students to respond?” “How can I ensure that students are learning from question-based discussions?” Another key concern: “How can I get students to begin interacting with each other rather than conducting a discussion much like a ping-pong match where the rapid exchanges occur only between a single student and me and then another student and me?” This last question can lead faculty to a different model of questioning, one in which students generate questions that are then …
