The first part of the problem was the investigation of whether a person with no formal training in speech could successfully administer Gray's (1970) language development program. The second part of the problem was the investigation of whether the two subjects involved would gain the ability to use new language structures.

Focus Room was then decided upon as a method of meeting these needs by integrating the educationally disadvantaged with the more abled students. The purpose of the project was to apply a specified training program and test its results with eight pupils who constituted a class for trainable mentally retarded children. The children were placed in the group on the basis of evaluation by a school psychologist. The training program was the Social Education First Aid (SEFA) program (Gunzburg, 1964). Additional concrete materials were used to supplement the SEFA material. The children's growth in the following areas of social competence was evaluated: self-help, communication, socialization, and occupation.

Historically, the approach to teaching the special education child, who has learning difficulties, has been one of following the regular course of study but going more slowly than with the academically able student. However, junior high school special education students need to be motivated by techniques that go beyond existing methods. As a preliminary investigation of delay factors in discrimination learning, the present study was designed primarily to contrast the effect of a short delay in response with the same duration of delay of reinforcement in order to evaluate the possibility that reinforcement-delay alone during the standard response-delay experiment is responsible for decremental effects.
