Active Learning is a key component when attempting to increase online retention. The overwhelming number of techniques can make instructors wish for super powers to determine which to implement in their courses. Initial research suggests reflection, individualized learning, and social media as important places to start. This session will provide 30 techniques that can be implemented online or onsite, offer some real-life implementations and success, and encourage audience participation for additional discussion. The focus will not be on new technologies, but rather how to incorporate these methods using basic tools found in most LMSs.

This presentation will be geared to both face-to-face and online instructors. It will show the many ways video can serve as a superhero by being created and used to help with instruction of the course content as well as to help establish and increase instructor presence. Additionally different ways of using video will be shown to help with student-student, student-instructor, and student-content interaction. One of the challenges of online education is the lack of real-time feedback. JotForm is a web-based form builder used to track and evaluate student progress through an entire class rather than at the end of it. Forms can be embedded into existing learning materials and learning management systems. I will demonstrate some JotForm features suitable for online education and assessment and share how the UMKC School of Law is using JotForm to assess, engage, and communicate with students. Hands-on training will be provided on how to build your first interactive forms.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to discover how four universally recognized best practices in online pedagogy affected teaching evaluation scores in online graduate courses. The four best practices in online pedagogy are: Course Organization and Presentation, Learning Objectives and Assessments, Instructor-Student Interpersonal Interaction, and the Appropriate Use of Video or Multimedia. Math Emporium Model: Preparing Developmental Students For College Algebra, Stephanie Patton Williams

This study examined the effectiveness of the Emporium Model in reducing math anxiety and in preparing developmental math students at a community college to be successful in College Algebra. The study involved 59 students enrolled in Intermediate Algebra at a community college and compared those in the Emporium class format to those in the Traditional class format. Participants completed a pre-post math anxiety rating scale questionnaire and a pre-post algebra readiness test to address the research questions of the study. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of online adjunct faculty who have a high sense of community within their respective university. Sense of community was generally defined as feelings of connectedness within the university community. The theories that guided this study were McMillan and Chavis’ (1986) sense of community theory and Herzberg’s (1968) motivation-hygiene theory. McMillan and Chavis’ sense of community theory suggests a sense of community is a powerful force that influences people. This study analyzed the effects of live academic support sessions on online graduate students’ interaction with the course content. This was accomplished through qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. In-depth interviews with eight purposely selected online graduate students provided the textual data. Through a systematic framework analysis of the data garnered through interview, it was found that students did perceive the live interactions as being especially effective in improving their interactions with the course content. The Summer LibGuides Revamp was a four week series, with each week focusing on a different aspect of LibGuides best practices. Each workshop built upon the last one in a scaffolding approach: the profile box/guide homepage, links, appearance, and accessibility. Many students are not motivated to participate in collaborative learning experiences in online courses (Dirkx & Smith, 2004). Mathematical knowledge and skills are crucial to success in academics and the workplace. The Common Core State Standards emphasizes fraction teaching and learning in elementary school. This mixed-method study explores fraction concept understanding among 14 deaf and hard of hearing participants between the ages of 8 and 16, as quantitatively measured by their ability to describe the properties of fractional numbers, convert between fractional numbers and their visual representations, and determine the order and equivalence of fractional numbers. This article used personal narratives to discover factors affecting the decision of African American males to consider doctoral education. This study was based on qualitative interviews with 18 African American male doctoral students enrolled at predominantly white institutions as they reflected on their reasons for pursuing an advanced degree. The following were found to influence their decision: (a) need for faculty encouragement, (b) motivation to pursue a doctorate, and (c) their personal motivations. Recommendations are offered for increasing the numbers of African American male doctoral students.

Moreover, teaching and learning resources implore faculty to incorporate mobile learning into their classrooms (Baran, 2014). Despite the apparent momentum, mobile learning is far from being widely adopted. A course design question for self-paced courses includes whether or not technological measures should be used in course design to force students to follow the sequence intended by the course author. This study examined learner behavior to understand whether the sequence of student assignment submissions in a self-paced distance course is related to successful completion of the course. The study included 543 students in 89 different general education courses at a private university in the United States during a two year period.
