Using Colored Overlays And Reduced Lighting: A Case Study, Jeanette P. Brown

This case study of a forty-five year old male sought to improve the reading rate and comprehension of printed reading material and computer reading lessons with the use of a colored transparent overlay. The reading rate increased by fifty percent with the use of the colored overlay and comprehension improved thirty percent for this individual.

The most recent curriculum guide for junior-high mathematics published by the Muscogee County School District and distributed in February, 1988, identifies five mathematics courses that may be offered in the Junior high schools throughout the system. For seventh graders, there are courses in remedial mathematics, regular mathematics, and pre-Algebra. For eighth graders, the guide lists two courses: remedial and regular. The purpose of this paper is to provide language teachers with a broader understanding of dyslexia. I will draw from my own experience as well as provide various viewpoints on dyslexia given by neurologists, therapists, special education teachers, and adults with problems that stem from dyslexia. This paper will not provide instant remedies for various learning disorders. Instead, I will discuss the problems a dyslexic faces in language acquisition. I will also offer some approaches and suggestions on ways to recognize specific problem areas. And finally, I will give teachers some suggestions on working effectively with dyslexic students.

This study investigated the efficacy of a professional self-disclosure statement as a pretraining treatment of role induction in counseling. Two videotape models of pretraining for first-time clients were compared with a notreatment control condition. The eight dependent variables investigated included six of client expectation: client attitudes and behaviors, client characteristics, counselor characteristics, characteristics of process, counselor attitudes and behaviors, and the quality of outcome; one of state anxiety; and one of continuance in counseling. The counselor-specific client role induction consisted of a professional self-disclosure statement discussing purpose and expectations of counseling, confidentiality, and counselor training. This project consists of a videotape and an accompanying manual. Various scenes from American movies are put on videotape to offer students of English as a foreign language material for studying spoken English. The manual consists of transcriptions of the dialog in each scene, vocabulary lists of words and expressions common only to spoken English, plus aids and suggestions for classroom use of the material. Computer drill and practice reading programs were developed to supplement basal instruction in first grade. The project was created to provide drill and practice on basal vocabulary and promote sight word acquisition. Five program types were developed. The programs were sequential in level of difficulty. Students were required to complete a sentence from which a word had been omitted. Responses varied from choosing from two given vocabulary words, choosing from familiar and unfamiliar rhyming words, and completing the spelling of a word.

An Adaption Of A Student Team Learning Technique To Selected Objectives Of The Muscogee County English Course Of Study For Grades Five And Six, Steve Olive

This project adapts selected objectives of the Muscogee County English Course of Study for grades five and six to a student team learning instructional method known as Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT). This method uses a cooperative classroom reward structure and peer tutoring to build peer support for achievement. Extensive research has shown TGT to be very effective.

Included in the adaptation package are TGT implementation instructions for teachers, all materials necessary for using TGT for one six-weeks period in fifth and sixth grade English classes, and directions for developing materials to use with other objectives.
