The purpose of the study was to analyze the racial achievement gap between high schools that had a one-to-one technology program and schools without this program. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment reading and math data were collected on 20 Minnesota high schools, 10 with a one-to-one program and 10 without for the 2016-2018 school years. Along with math and reading proficiency data for the 20 schools, achievement gaps were calculated for each school and averaged for each group of schools for the three years studied. Data was collected from a publicly available resource, the Minnesota Department of Education Report Card website. The …

While many consider college students to be digital natives, who are at ease with multiple forms of technology, many of these students do not adapt these skills for academic purposes. Retention concerns for college students often prompt support staff to seek out and adopt technology approaches to promote completion. This study provided a virtual learning platform to deliver academic support and sought to promote learning community interaction for rural and urban post-secondary students. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the characteristics of effective leadership in technology integration for school leaders and staff members in three southeastern, U.S. elementary schools. The theoretical framework that guided this study was based on Spillane’s (2005) distributed leadership model and Kouzes and Posner’s (2012) model of transformational leadership. These theories provided an understanding of leadership practices and characteristics that fostered an environment, which successfully supported the process of technology integration. The study compared student preintervention and postintervention survey data prior to and after a sixth grade laptop intervention initiative. The survey responses were divided into 5 dimensions (School Subject Attitudes, Teaching and Learning Preferences, Computer Use Perceptions, Technology Skills, and Personal Attitudes and Behaviors) on both pre- and postsurveys. The purpose of this study was to discover how pre-service teachers (PSTs), classroom teachers, and administrators in an urban charter school perceive their own professional autonomy and administrative support by the school, and how the balance of autonomy and support impact their instructional practices. I designed and implemented this research as a single case study of Highland Charter School (a pseudonym), in a Midwestern U.S. city. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate technology use for differentiation to boost achievement in math.Fourth grade students were assigned intervention activities based upon their fall NWEA scores. The interventions were for twenty minutes each for twelve lessons in both IXL and Khan Academy. Students were observed for their engagement every five minutes during these interventions. Students were also given pre and post tests from their current Pearson math curriculum. Findings indicated that over 50% of the students did meet their projected RIT scores when they took their winter NWEA math test. The greatest growth was found in …

This study investigated factors predicting the intentions of English Language Learner (ELL) teachers to use Google Earth for language development instruction. The researchers used quantitative research methods using an electronic survey (n=40), with a 28% return rate. Results indicated that attitude was a significant predictor of ELL teachers’ intentions to use Google Earth during instruction in a rural New England state. Additional findings indicate that when comparing teachers who intended or were using Google Earth during instruction to those who did not, there were significant differences between groups. However, 95% of ELL teachers within this rural state received no training …

As one-to-one computing initiatives become commonplace, some Catholic school educators might find themselves wondering what, if anything, such technologies might have to do with Catholic identity. This case study drew upon survey and interview data to explore the intersection of Catholic vision and mission with the implementation of a one-to-one (BYOD) initiative. The study finds that Catholic values informed the school’s support of teachers, as well as its efforts to help students navigate the personal and social issues associated with devices. A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to identify and analyze issues in the implementation of one-to-one computing initiatives and provide solutions for improvement. An understanding of the implementation process was developed through the analysis of data collected through 27 interviews with teacher experts in the field who have worked with the implementation of one-to-one programs. Teachers were purposely selected from the following groups: those who were completing their first year of teaching, those who had between two and ten years of teaching experience, and those who had eleven plus years of total teaching experience. Research on 1:1 laptop implementations is missing key information about student achievement on high-stakes assessment. This post hoc, quasi-experimental, quantitative study explores how 1:1 laptop access affects student achievement on the mandated eighth-grade online science assessment in five Mississippi school districts throughout the state. Fifth-grade science assessment results are used as a baseline for student achievement. Three research questions examined mean scale scores on the science assessment, change in scores from fifth to eighth-grade, and the effect on scale scores as the duration of the 1:1 laptop implementation increased. This article reviews the extant literature on distance learning technologies and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In the context of increased attention to massive open online courses (MOOCs), this article argues that HBCUs’ challenges with respect to their technological infrastructure suggests that they may be better suited to serve as advocates for bridging the persistent digital divide in the nation rather than adopters of MOOCs as a new instructional platform. The authors offer some suggestions for further research to ensure that HBCUS leaders can address larger systemic issues affecting the quality of education on their campuses.
