This study investigated the factors associated with teacher enrolment in a school-university professional development (PD) partnership. A grant-funded programme was developed to provide a maximum of 15 graduate credit hours to middle school teachers, focusing on rural, high-needs schools in the southeastern United States. At 61 middle schools across the state, the university recruiter composed field notes regarding principal and teacher engagement during recruitment meetings. Other factors potentially influencing enrolment were identified and statistical analyses were conducted. Variables included enthusiasm (teacher and principal), modality of recruitment meeting (in person or virtual), attendance (mandatory or optional), semester (fall or spring), and …

Leadership In Idaho Full-Service Community Schools, Amy Mayton
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Full-service community schools (FSCS) model can be traced back more than a century in the United States. Full-service community schools operate under the four-pillar model: Integrated student support, expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities, active family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership practices. FSCS are neighborhood focused schools that bring together the community, families, businesses and leaders to establish partnerships to help educate the “whole” child. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to identify and describe the principal and coordinator’s role, the relationship between community school principal and coordinator and investigate how the principal enacts leadership practice …
African American Male Overidentification In Special Education Services: Teacher Perspectives On The Referral Process, Amanda Gray
African American Male Overidentification In Special Education Services: Teacher Perspectives On The Referral Process, Amanda Gray
Student Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative narrative study explored the perceptions of public-school general education teachers on the training they received for referring students to special education. Two key aspects of this were investigated: (1) navigating the special education referral process, and (2) using individualized interventions that are effective with African American male students. The problem addressed in this study is the overidentification of African American male students in special education. This causes concern in the educational community, as students misidentified often suffer unintended consequences such as segregated learning environments, low expectations, and fewer post-secondary opportunities. Using social inequality theory as a theoretical framework, …
Cultural Advocacy And Teachers Of Color, Torine Champion, Linda Wilson-Jones
Cultural Advocacy And Teachers Of Color, Torine Champion, Linda Wilson-Jones
Journal of Research Initiatives
Teachers of color face marginalization and microaggressions that their White counterparts do not have to face. African American teachers experience microaggressions pathologizing their cultural values and communication styles, cultural/ethnic insensitivity, an ascription of their intelligence, and being treated as second-class citizens) that are hurtful, undermining, and disparaging (Brown, 2019). Asian American teachers face gendered, racial, and sexualized expectations on their campuses (Endo, 2015). A study of Latina bilingual teachers revealed that they felt alienated from their colleagues, had larger workloads, and did not have access to support (Amos, 2016). Teachers of color experience inequalities, microaggressions, and marginalization that impact their …

Bringing Effective Coaching To Scale: Experiences Of Instructional Coaches In A Large-Scale Coaching Program: A Phenomenological Study, Kristen A. Skura
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study aimed to understand the barriers that might exist for full-time instructional coaches in an established, large-scale coaching program in a large public school district on the East Coast of the U.S. The theories that guided this study were Knowles’ adult learning theory and the partnership philosophy put forth by Knight as a theoretical foundation for quality instructional coaching. The partnership philosophy is built on the ideas of adult learning theory. Knight suggests seven principles of effective instructional coaching, though this study was focused on only four: equality, reflection, praxis, and reciprocity. The methods of this study included …

Grounded in Adult Learning Theory, the study emphasizes self-directed learning and practical knowledge for professional development. Thematic findings reveal that Teacher Leadership Preparation Programs are primarily research-based on the practitioner’s perspective, offering insights grounded in classroom experience, while Educational Leadership Preparation Programs focus on developing supervisory skills for school and district leadership roles. This highlights the different focal points in leadership training, with teacher leadership prioritizing mentorship and educational leadership focusing on supervision. …

Educational leaders must improve cohesion between general education and special education departments to support the academic achievement and success of all students in schools. Through qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies, methods to improve this cohesion were researched. The research provided insight on how general education and special education teachers feel about collaboration and how collaborative efforts can be utilized to improve cohesion. These collaborative …
Promoting Positive White Racial Identity Development In K-12 Teachers: A Qualitative Case Study, Johnny Cole
Promoting Positive White Racial Identity Development In K-12 Teachers: A Qualitative Case Study, Johnny Cole
Educational Studies Dissertations
The process of racial identity development (RID) is widely agreed to be the process by which an individual comes to understand the role race plays in their sense of self, how it influences their ability to acquire information and reach goals, how it affects their interpersonal interactions with others, and the manner in which it assigns group membership in the larger society. The formative years students spend in K-12 educational environments can play an important role in their RID; thus educators’ awareness of these developmental processes can potentially help dismantle the systems of inequity within a critical race theory framework …

Teacher Perceptions Of The Boundless Learning Professional Development On Instruction In A Co-Taught Class, Debbie Fleming
Teacher Perceptions Of The Boundless Learning Professional Development On Instruction In A Co-Taught Class, Debbie Fleming
Student Theses and Dissertations
The concept of serving students with disabilities in their least restrictive environment is a fundamental principle of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This mandate emphasizes that students with disabilities should receive their education alongside their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible. This is often achieved in a co-taught class led by a general education and a special education co-teacher. Frequently, these educators feel unprepared to provide instruction that is adequate to meet the diverse needs of their students. General educators do not feel they have the skills necessary to teach students with disabilities, and special educators question if …

Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The teacher shortage experienced across the United States within the K-12 system has garnered the attention of policymakers nationwide. Alternatively certified educators within all subject areas specified the need for additional support within the following areas: catered professional development opportunities, reduced extracurricular expectations, mentor/mentee programs, and extended planning time. Assessing The Role Of The Northern Education Initiative (Nei) Plus Teacher Training Program In Enhancing Teachers’ Professional Development In Gamawa, Bauchi State, Nigeria., Aisha Yakub
Educational Studies Dissertations
The lack of access to quality education in northern Nigeria has proven endemic due to the incessant marginalization of the area by various governments since independence to date. The marginalization and lack of investment in teacher training institutions to bridge the manpower gap has created a vicious cycle of poverty, high illiteracy rates, and banditry in most of the northern states in Nigeria. Apart from the historical marginalization of these states, another critical factor that has been identified as contributing to this problem is the lack of professional development opportunities for teachers. The NEI Plus teacher training program is a …
