The following fieldwork chronicles the personal and professional trajectory of Cindy Greenspun, a social justice leader at Yale University Library. At the age of eighteen months, Greenspun suffered an illness that resulted in the loss of her hearing and spent nearly the first half of her life fully immersed in the hearing world. Through significant self-reflection and perseverance, Greenspun evolved beyond the binary paradigm of oralism–the exclusive use of speech and lip reading–to ultimately embrace the essence of being both bilingual (speech and sign) and bicultural (hearing and non-hearing). All types of higher education institutions have come to rely on some element of revenue diversification, and fundraising from private sources has become increasingly common and popular among community college presidents. Yet despite the growth in attention to fundraising, community colleges collectively only garner 2% of all philanthropic support to higher education. With the growing demand for private funds, community college presidents must understand how they are using their time for fundraising, and ultimately, the consequence of these fundraising efforts. This study examined three hypothesized math-self efficacy (MSE) sources that inhibit adult basic education male prisoner mathematics achievement. Previous correctional studies indicated that United States prisoners tend to have low self-efficacy and therefore lower academic achievement (Greve & Enzmann, 2003). Adult education studies also indicated lower self-efficacy in adults older than age 20 who take coursework to complete their high school diploma (Jameson & Fusco, 2014). Survey studies of MSE factors from analysis showed that students who self-reported lower self-confidence, negative self-beliefs, increased math anxieties, and greater devaluation of math’s usefulness to their future employment have significant barriers to math …

This study examined the relationship of work stressors and perceived organizational support on work engagement for nurse managers in geriatric care practice settings. A non-experimental descriptive, cross sectional design examined the relationship in nurse managers working for member organizations of two Minnesota aging services trade associations: LeadingAge and Care Providers. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine which factors in the modified National Survey of Student Engagement benchmark variables, demographic variables, and experience variables relate to student engagement in online secondary education. The survey collected data from online secondary schools in Minnesota on benchmark variables, as well as demographic variables in grade level and employment, and experience variables of previous online education and length of time with the current online program. This study explores the need for tailored higher education curricula for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as they transition from college to employment. I t is estimated that 50,000 individuals diagnosed with ASD turn eighteen each year (Autism Speaks, 2012), and one in three of those individuals are entering higher education ( Roux , Shattuck, Rast, Rava, & Anderson, 2015) . The National History Day program has been utilized in a Southeastern Minnesota school on and off since Minnesota began participating in the program in the 1980s. This secondary data analysis sought to determine the impact that embedding National History Day programming would have on the achievement of students on two standardized tests, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment III and the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress. Very small colleges, under 750 students, are valuable and yet vulnerable institutions in American higher education. Without financial stability, very small colleges are more susceptible to failure in the face of economic challenges. Very small colleges adopt many of the same financial strategies used by larger colleges without consideration that the size of the college may require different strategies. This study considered the relationship between the unfunded tuition discount rate and the financial health of private, non-profit, four-year, baccalaureate colleges. This study investigated a potential path to foster trust in two levels of college and university leadership (direct leaders and senior leadership). Two direct leader empowering leadership behaviors (participative decision-making and informing) where explored as antecedents of trust. The population studied was full-time faculty members at mid-sized not-for-profit colleges and universities in the Great Lakes region. Direct leader’s participative decision-making related positively with trust in direct leader. Evidence of trust transfer through a hierarchical layer of leadership was also found. Motivating and retaining teachers is a critical element of the educational process. In 2011, Florida law required school administrators to implement a Valued-Added Model (VAM) for teacher evaluation, compensation, and retention decisions. However, the Florida VAM includes complex calculations to measure student learning progress. This qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ professional and personal perceptions of the VAM to determine teachers’ performance, compensation, and personnel consequences. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how Montessori early childhood teachers approach teaching about race and racial bias in their classrooms. Twenty-four Montessori early childhood teachers participated in an open-ended survey, and five teachers of those 24 participated in a data-informed online semi-structured interview. The interviewees received an infographic with narrative and graphics in which themes of the survey were detailed, a form of graphic elicitation. Surveys and interviews were coded and analyzed for themes. Themes were verified through independent coding by an independent analyst. Ninth-grade students were given a survey modified from the work of Aydin, Yerdelen, Gurbuzuglo, Yalmanci, and Goksu (2014) following completion of their high school biology course which asked for their level of agreement on 18 statements regarding motivation to learn biology. The results from the state assessment in biology standards competencies were correlated with reported motivation type and level. Students were asked to indicate their course choice, identified culture, gender, and whether they qualified for free or reduced-priced lunch. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship, if any, between the adaptive culture of an elementary school and student achievement. The Adaptive Culture Profile Scale collected data from elementary school leadership teams across Minnesota. This data was then compared to student achievement results, as measured by the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA). Results of the study indicate there is no relationship between adaptive culture of an elementary school and student achievement proficiency or student achievement growth. This dissertation investigated how designers, leaders, and clients at a large public research university enacted and perceived the value of design thinking as an approach to solving problems. A review of the literature found interest but little research in how design thinking may help higher education institutions address complex problems. The researcher visited the university, gathered documents, viewed and photographed work spaces used for design thinking, and conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 people at the university. Recent charter school closures in a Southeastern Michigan community have created an influx of displaced students from communities where families are not provided systematic support to make the unexpected transition. The study utilized focus group and individual interviews to collect data from high school students who have experienced their charter high school closing and have transitioned into a single charter high school. This paper adopts an Arendtian approach to consider the interconnections among responsibility, ethics, and leadership. Considering responsibility through an Arendtian lens may offer insights into leadership ethics. These insights may help deepen our understanding of the nascent theory of responsible leadership. In particular, Arendt's emphasis on judgment illustrates the importance of responsible action. Engaging with the Arendtian corpus may help us rethink connections among leadership, ethics, and responsibility in new and productive ways. This engagement with Arendt's work can in turn add value to thinking about responsible, ethics, and leadership.
