This replication survey research study sought to further understand preservice elementary teachers’ perceptions of assessment tasks they encountered in secondary science coursework. Students are assessed through informal and formal assessments, including close-ended and open-ended questions, through classroom and high-stakes assessments. With great significance placed on high-stakes state assessments, classroom instruction and assessments oftentimes mirror the format of state assessments. The researcher administered a validated Likert scale inventory, the Perceptions of Assessment Tasks Inventory (PATI), to preservice elementary teachers to examine their perceptions of how assessment tasks reflected their knowledge and understanding of science assessment tasks. Recent literature was reviewed to locate articles with perspectives and attitudes of cooperating teachers who work with preservice teachers at school sites in coordination with institutions that have teacher preparation programs in general and/or special education. The results showed an emphasis in reporting the external aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as the daily activities, and little was reported about the internal aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as personal experience and rationale for working a preservice teacher into a classroom. Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader

The purpose of this qualitative, multi-site, multi-case study was to examine how three early college high school principals in North Carolina promote the success of the first generation, students of color and low-income students they serve. The study examined these principals through a conceptual framework of democratic, socially just, culturally responsive leadership. Findings show that two out of the three principals demonstrated the qualities and characteristics of democratic, socially just, culturally responsive leaders. Additionally, each principal led their school based on the values and beliefs each held about student achievement, access, equity and educational opportunity. The study has implications for …

A Qualitative Study On The Influence Of Quality Systems In Meeting Performance Funding Criteria In Wisconsin Technical College System Institutions, Kinga N. Jacobson

This case study investigated the influence of quality systems on meeting performance funding criteria in Wisconsin Technical College System institutions. Using qualitative text-analysis methodology, the case study identified the common processes, systems, values, and culture of three Wisconsin Forward Award-recognized technical colleges, looking for ways these characteristics were used for attaining performance-based funding goals. Sources analyzed included the colleges’ Wisconsin Forward Award application documents and evaluator feedback reports, and the transcripts of six interviews conducted with professionals with expertise in organizational effectiveness and performance funding at these institutions. This article chronicles a year-long model of engagement in action research for administrators as it unfolds within a professional development program for practicing principals. Part one of the article, authored by the program developers, describes five components of the inquiry coaching model: (1) introducing the action research process, (2) developing a wondering/research question, (3) developing a plan for research, (4) analyzing data, and (5) sharing work with others. Part two of the article, authored by a principal, provides an example of action research produced by a participant in program.

Argument education can play an important role in higher education for leadership development and responding to increasing calls for post-secondary accountability. But to do so, argumentation teachers, scholars, and practitioners need to develop a clearer definition and research agenda for the purposes of teaching and assessing argumentation. The research conducted here contributes to this project by first establishing a definitional construct and observable behaviors associated with learning and practicing argumentation. In order to use this tremendous amount of money efficiently it is important educators understand the impact different spending priorities, specifically total per-pupil expenditures, teacher salary, principal salary, pupil/teacher ratio, and pupil/support personnel ratio have on student achievement and how these inputs are moderated by a district’s population density and wealth.
