The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of early childhood program participation on academic achievement by grade 3. This case study utilized a quantitative approach to data collection. For purposes of this research, one P-12 school district in central New Jersey was studied to look at the influence of early childhood program participation on academic achievement as measured by the NJ ASK 3. Books about leadership are dangerous to readers who fantasize about being leaders or apply leadership ideas as if they were proven formulas. As an antidote, I offer an experimental framework in which any leadership-management model can be tested to gain experiential understanding of the model. As a result one can gain reality-based insights about leadership and oneself. The experiment is described; resistances to engaging it are considered; and examples from a leadership group implementing Covey’s “Seven Principles are summarized. This study supports the work of Black and Wiliam (1998), who demonstrated that when teachers effectively utilize formative assessment strategies, student learning increases significantly. However, the researchers also found a “poverty of practice” among teachers, in that few fully understood how to implement classroom formative assessment. This qualitative case study examined a series of voluntary workshops offered at one middle school designed to address this poverty of practice. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews. These research questions framed the study: (1) What role did a professional learning community structure play in shaping workshop participants’ perceived effectiveness of a voluntary formative …

About 46 percent of school boards conducted their most recent superintendent search without a professional consultant. In 2000, some 54 percent went it alone on their search, according to AASI!(s decennial superintendency surveys. During the past decade, the percentage of districts hiring private help to fill their CEO vacancy increased from about 18 percent to 24 percent. School districts retaining the state school boards association for this purpose increased from 19 percent in 2000 to 22 percent in 2010.

The purpose of this correlational study is to test the theory of servant leadership that relates the servant leadership characteristics of school principals to student achievement in Southwest Virginia schools. The primary independent variable was principals' servant leadership characteristics as derived from a self-assessment survey (SASL). The dependent variable was student achievement as measured by students' scores on the Virginia Department of Education Standard of Learning achievement tests in math and reading. Internally, informal networks consist of the relationships between people within the organization; these networks may not align with the formal organizational chart. Financial inequities in families and communities lie at the root of many of America’s educational inequalities, including the diminished presence of low-income families among private school populations. Educational equity requires the equal treatment of all children except in cases where equal treatment fails to meet a particular educational need, such as is the case for children disadvantaged by poverty (Catterall 1982, 3; Berne and Steifel 1999). Improved accessibility to the private sector for children from low-income families counteracts some of the obstacles created by poverty and strengthens equity.

Introduction: The Lost Boys are a group of young male Sudanese who were driven from their homelands because of war. They traveled on foot to Ethiopia then were relocated to Kenya, where many lived for five to ten years in a refugee camp. Beginning about 3 years ago, hundreds of these young men were granted refugee status in the United States. The group of 150+ Lost Boys in Salt Lake City is continuing to grow, as is the need to facilitate their education, skill training and employment, and integration.

There is a great need in our community to unite different religious, ethnic and racial groups. In 2001 an “Alliance for Unity” was formed in Utah. Its Statement of Purpose and Mission Statement were read to LDS wards throughout the State. It reads “our Alliance for Unity will seek ways to bring people together for the benefit of all. We will encourage specific projects of common purpose. Our overriding goal is to help people cross boundaries of culture, religion and ethnicity to better understand and befriend one another”. This is the first of several columns that will focus on the mechanisms by which new ideas become accepted by a culture, offering some familiar examples, deriving basic principles from these examples, and applying them to the problem of promoting quantitative literacy in an educational system. In this essay we describe how new concepts become embedded in a culture through their connections to existing ideas, and use this principle to suggest strategies of discourse about numeracy that promote it among various constituencies in the culture.
