State legislators, governors, federal officials, and corporate executives — all of whom were exceedingly eager to react to earlier education reports such as A Nation at Risk- have been amazingly silent. Where are the legislative proposals to eradicate this problem? Where are the creative ideas from managers in private industry? Where are the calls for establishing a national commission to address this crisis? The most likely response to these questions is that the cost of solving the problem is simply too great. This study was designed to examine and compare self-perceived leader behavior and characteristics of black and white chief administrators of colleges and universities. The population for this study included chief administrators of the 538 four year colleges and universities, both public and private, within the 15 Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states. A randomly selected sample of 18 black and 12 white (total n=150) chief administrators was used for this study.

Data collected by the LBDQ-S focuses on two types of self-perceived leader behavior, initiating structure and consideration. The demographic questionnaire collected data which included respondents, race, gender, age, years …

The purpose of this study was to rate the significance of selected factors that influence college choice for first-year students who chose to attend, during fall, 1994, 1 of 10 American liberal arts colleges and universities associated with the Churches of Christ. This study further evaluated the relationship of the rating of these factors with specific student demographic data and the timing of the college choice decision.

Completed surveys were received from 2,677 respondents representing 76% rate of return. According to the results, the most influential college choice factors were the college's religious affiliation, academic reputation, job placement reputation, offer …

Formal adult teacher model mentoring programs tend to have a predictable set of elements: policies, mentor selection procedures, mentor training activities, mentor role expectations, mentor-adult teacher matching, and secondary development relationships. Mentoring is an individualized, long-term, teaching/learning relationship between two people used to accomplish a variety of purposes. Yet, little evaluation has been conducted to determine its results, or the effectiveness of the current process, with an eye to making program improvements. My career as a media specialist began 15 years ago. When I started, technology by today's standards was limited. Computers were few or nonexistent and the video cassette recorders (VCRs) was looked at as a new technological teaching tool. Library/media skills were taught solely by the media specialist with little or no consideration for when or where they would be used in the curriculum. Teachers were comfortable with the traditional teaching models and most did not envision a need for change.

Telecommunications first came to Monticello when I set up an online Bulletin Board System (BBS) at Carpenter Elementary. The year was 1984, and very few schools, or individuals, were prepared for educational telecommunications. The BBS was called "Atlantis." I named it that because of the legend of the lost city of antiquity. It was to be a source of information and knowledge as was the mythical city of Atlantis.

As with so many other issues involving educational change, whether the use of the Internet becomes successfully integrated into instruction depends heavily upon the investment we make in training our staff in its use. Estimates of the amount spent in business and industry to train staff to use new technologies vary widely, but seem to fall within the range of 30¢ to $1 spent on training for every dollar spent on equipment and software. We fall nowhere near even the bottom of that range in education.

With a smile on every single County Supervisors' face, the vote was unanimous to give Cedar Net $30,000 as a contribution from the seven Black Hawk County libraries. Cedar Net is the Cedar Valley area community computing network presently being formed in Northeast Iowa.
