Understanding the problem encompasses having a clearly defined target audience and a well-researched pain point. They’ll find out how to dig deep into a problem to find the causes and issues surrounding it, rather than just settling with problems at face-value. A crucial aspect of politics is the use of data as a means to convince people of their side. Data can be manipulated to say almost anything a person wants, which can be a means of deception. A common phenomenon in the political sphere is “fake news,” which is often caused by a misconstruction of facts. In order for students to be able to find credible and reliable information, they must be able to identify and acknowledge bias when looking through different sources of media.

This modules aims to go further into the lean startup than students have done in previous modules. It introduces three key features from the lean startup: the minimum viable product, the Build-Measure-Learn loop, and pivots. These three techniques are integral in the lean startup methodology, which focuses on minimizing risk, failing fast, and using the minimum amount of resources, time and funding.

The Group Dynamics module focuses on informing students about inter/intra group interactions, while also demonstrating the role of an individual within a group. As individuals become a part of a group, they lose a certain distinction between their personal identity and their group personality, or prototype. Individuals become part of a social categorization and comparison, and require the skills of empathy and relations to successfully communicate with not only their ingroup, but also their outgroup. This module encompasses the controversy and broadness of gender. Students begin with recognizing their subconscious gender biases, followed by a providing them with a vernacular of culture to help students better understand and differentiate terms. Then the students will explore the fluidity of gender through discussion on gender X and transgender. Furthermore, there will be an activity about the origin of gender roles, and how that shaped gender roles today. The students will also be able to apply their learnings to the real world by learning how to resolve conflict regarding gender and sexuality.

Over the past few weeks, IMSA’s summer camps and outreach programs have been in full swing. Last week, we hosted over 300 students and educators on campus for Summer@IMSA day camps, PROMISE SEAMS classes, the Student Inquiry and Research (SIR) program, Golden Apple and Fusion POP. The excitement and engagement from these students and educators is palpable and spreads across our entire Academy in Aurora. Outside of the Academy, our programs with partner schools in Chicago and Belleville are in full swing. In this module, students consider various ethical codes relevant in a position of leadership. By the end of the module, students will be able to differentiate between ethics and morals, examine how ethics and morals play a role in the decision making process, reframe their preconceptions of ethical decisions, and compare ethical and unethical paths to reach a certain goal. This module examines case studies of different ethical scenarios that challenge students to discuss different perspectives and develop their own opinions. The purpose of the Gender & Leadership module is for students to develop an understanding of the role gender plays in contemporary society and the relationship between gender and leadership. The objectives of this module are for students to be able to to define gender vernacular and differentiate between terms, dissect how gender roles were constructed, and identify the role of gender biases in leadership.
