Creating Virtual Cooperative Learning Experiences For Aspiring School Leaders And Practitioners With Web 2.0, Do-Hong Kim, Patricia Wilkins, David Dunaway

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In December of 2008, the authors were awarded a University of North Carolina at Charlotte funded curriculum and instructional development grant based on two innovative ideas for preparing future school leaders: (1) the creation and use of wikis to expand and deepen student learning beyond the classroom, and (2) the creation of a virtual social network to connect current educational leadership students and graduates, providing the opportunity and the means for networking between students and practitioners, practitioners with each other, and both groups with educational leadership professors around the proposition that solving problems of practice (whether in the graduate classroom …

Literacy Centers: A Way To Increase Reading Development, Lisa Burke, Sara Baillie Jul 2011

Literacy Centers: A Way To Increase Reading Development, Lisa Burke, Sara Baillie

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Given the current trends in education and the passing of No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 (U.S. Department of Education), literacy education has become increasingly important. Many studies have been done that indicate that students who do not learn how to read in the early years of their education may experience failure during the later years (Martson, Deno, Dongil, Diment, & Rogers, 1995). The National Reading Panel’s (NRP, 2000) findings suggest that becoming a good reader in elementary school is more likely to produce a more effective learner and a better reader as students move through school and into …

Pilgrim’S Progress: Lessons In Shared Governance, Stephen L. Hansen, E. Duff Wrobbel, Julie D. Hopwood, Paul W. Ferguson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In the Spring of 2006, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) initiated a conversation to define a “Teacher-Scholar” Philosophy appropriate for the campus. In an experience similar to John Bunyan’s protagonist, Christian, in the classic 1678 allegory Pilgrim’s Progress, the SIUE faculty and administrators set off on a 21st century journey of discovery.[2] Our journey, however, was toward shared governance, rather than down the path to salvation. Like Bunyan’s Christian, we traveled metaphorically through the Town of Vanity, the Valley of Humiliation, the Slough of Despond, the Hill of Difficulty, and the Castle of Doubt. Unlike Christian, however, our journey of …

The Concept Of Educational Leadership: Exploring Macro-Level Facets, Chetan Sinha Jul 2011

The Concept Of Educational Leadership: Exploring Macro-Level Facets, Chetan Sinha

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

At the dawn of the twenty first century, there is anticipation for better educational reforms both at the structural and functional level. Heck and Hallinger (2005) have observed that although various disciplinary and interdisciplinary movements, in their attempt to understand the history of educational leadership, have critically approached the issue; at a practical level all efforts still reside in the same individualistic resort. Authors have cited ample research dictating the processes of leadership in organizations both at individual and collective level (Bass, 1990; Knipe & Maclay, 1972; Heine, 1971; Hogg, 2001; Sinha, 1980; Yukl, 1998, 2002) however, in the arena …

The Social Context Of Urban School Reform: Collective Efficacy And Student Achievement, Carla E. Ellis

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if between-school variance in school-level student achievement is related to collective teacher efficacy in 10 urban elementary schools in Chicago. It also examined the effects of teacher leaders’ implementation of a School-University partnership and the leadership characteristics of principals on school collective efficacy. Collective teacher efficacy was measured using Goddard’s (1998) 6-point 21-item Likert Collective Teacher Efficacy scale. There were 280 teachers and 53 teacher leaders who completed the scale. The Collective Teacher Efficacy scale results were analyzed and examined in relationship to school-level Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) test …

Challenges Of Oral English In English As A Second Language (Esl) Learning In Nigeria, Olufunso Fasanmi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Second language learning has continued to pose learning challenges to English as a Second Language Learner (ESL) learners in Nigeria. Many scholars have carried out various research works on the problems of language learning and have come out with various recommendations, but in spite of these efforts, the problems of learning to use a second language have persisted. As it is, many of the teachers of English are non – native speakers and secondly, the language is being learnt and used far away from its natural environment. Elugbe (2000) observes that non native speakers are not likely to have expertise …

Academic Values Clarification As A Group Counseling Technique With Low Academic Need Achievement Level Students, Jtb Oluwatimilehin

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Need achievement motivation is a hypothetical construct designed to explain inter – individual and intra – individual differences in the orientation, intensity and consistency of achievement behaviour. School administrators, teachers, counseling psychologists and other school workers are particularly interested in the patterns of academic achievement behaviours of their students. Counselling as an important service programme in the school setting has to complement the efforts of other school staff in promoting good academic behaviours among students. Achievement motivation being regarded as underlying personality characteristic (Dimmock,2004; Ijaduola,2000) which involves a learned predisposition to attain success in competition with an internationalized standard of …

Selecting Learning Agility And Leadership Context: An Initial Survey Development Phase, Phillip Emerick

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In our modern Internet age, the rate of information is steadily increasing accompanied by increasing rates of access. There is a need to process huge volumes of information, quickly and appropriate for specific goals. Educational institutions have the opportunity to lead many in developing the skills for acquiring and applying relevant information under such rapidly changing conditions. Accordingly, educators, administrators and students might benefit from an assessment of their learning agility and leadership style. Discussion for selecting a context set for learning agility precedes discussion for leadership styles. A brief analysis of how the context might be used for a …

Academic Journal Publishing In Nigeria: Issues, Challenges And Prospects, A.O. Amusan, Dele Olanisimi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Compared to the situation up to the late 1970s, academic publishing in Africa and its concomitant effect of scholarly research has declined in terms of output, quality and regularity of a publications (Olukoju, 2002). This reflects the general decline in the standards and funding of education, a consequence of prolonged military rule characterized by lack of accountability and thinly veiled culture of obscurantism (Olukoju, 2002). He also stressed the problem of collapsed currency, owing to plunder, and mismanagement by the country’s military rulers and their civilian collaborations.

Budget Administration In Nigerian Universities: A Case Study Of Delta State University, Abraka, Anho Joseph Efe

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Education is considered to be the greatest investment any country can invest on to transform its economic, political and human resource. It requires huge and adequate financial provision, it is an expensive non profit social service which needs proper management and implementation. Therefore educational investment according to Saint et al, (2003) has become a decisive factor in knowledge-based economies that from global perspective, economic and social developments are increasingly being driven by the advancement and application of knowledge. The quality of a nation’s educational system especially tertiary education positively correlates with its development profile and determine by the nature and …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The presence of women in leadership roles at the secondary school level and above contributes to sensitivity within schools for the well-being of adolescent girls and provides girls beginning to consider career choices with role models of women decision-makers and leaders. It is also imperative that women be actively involved in leading educational change given the vital role that the educational system of a country plays in both national development and the development of a gender equal society for women to be active participants in the change and development process. They must be equipped and be provided with necessary skills …

Job Stress, Workload, Academic Freedom And Quality Research In Nigerian Universities, Chinelo Duze Apr 2011

Job Stress, Workload, Academic Freedom And Quality Research In Nigerian Universities, Chinelo Duze

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

One of the major obligations of higher education academic staff is to conduct research. It is used to assess the lecturer’s scholarship and leads to promotion. It is therefore expected that academic staff who must progress as expected should conduct quality research. Unfortunately, research in higher education in Nigeria seemly lacks the potentials to produce results that are sufficiently generalized for humanity’s stock of knowledge. This study therefore examined some of the impediments to quality research in Nigerian universities. The variables studied were the institutional factors of job stress, workload, and academic autonomy. These indices were considered institutional because they …

Adult Learning Styles And Technology-Driven Learning For Online Students, Emad Rahim, Aikyna Finch

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The growing crisis in the U.S. has caused many traditional colleges and universities to consider new ways to ensure economic competitiveness and continued financial growth without increasing the size and overhead of their campus.. Universities like Upper Iowa, University Bates College in Maine, and Ball State University in Indiana have begun to offer three-year undergraduate degrees and provide online courses to save students both time and money (Pope, 2009). Several colleges in Colorado are considering the option of moving from a traditional undergraduate classroom format to adding online courses as a means to raise revenue and increase student enrollment. Because …

An Exploration Of Attributions Towards Success In Secondary Students With Disabilities, D. Tyler

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

With the emergence of No Child Left Behind, the emphasis is on scientific-based research to provide evidence for certain practices and approaches to learning and remediation. While no one would deny that developing basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics are essential foundations for our youth, but, are they sufficient? A major topic of conversation across the nation is that American schools are failing in closing the achievement gap, particularly in reading and mathematics. While a variety of reading and mathematics programs have emerged, a number of professionals purport that more strategic solutions are needed to improve achievement. Moreover, when …

Assessing The Availability And Utilization Of Research Findings In Nigeria For Sustainable Development, Chinelo Duze Apr 2011

Assessing The Availability And Utilization Of Research Findings In Nigeria For Sustainable Development, Chinelo Duze

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent of availability and utilization of research findings in solving societal problems for economic growth and sustainable development in Nigeria. This represents a search in a different direction to attempt to explain the disappointing economic returns from education in Nigeria. Investments in education seem to have failed to deliver the goods in Nigeria and in most African countries, since most of them are still battling with under-development in the sense that the following indices of development noted by Udoidem (1992) are still eluding most African nations

Dental Public Health! A Mistaken Identity, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The dental public health field has been expanding in scope & complexity with more emphasis being placed on the total dental care delivery system and its impact on oral health status. A broadly accepted definition of “dental public health” has been given by Downer 1994: “The science and art of preventing oral disease, promoting oral health and improving quality of life through the organized efforts of society” (Downer et al,1994). A broader definition was made ten years later as follows: “The science and art of preventing oral disease, promoting oral health and improving quality of life through the organized efforts …

Domestic Violence And The Education Of The Nigeria Pre – School Child, Gladys Idogo Apr 2011

Domestic Violence And The Education Of The Nigeria Pre – School Child, Gladys Idogo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Literature tells us about three different views of children each relating to different era of civilization. The first is during the Greco – Roman times. During this period children were taken to be miniature adult and this depicted in the acts and paintings of that period. Children were not accorded any special status. As miniature adults, they were allowed to work on the fields and farms with little or no attachments to parents. The second is the medieval period. With the decline of the Greco-Roman civilization, Christianity came to the fore. Under the religious tenets, man was born evil and …

Dynamism Of Fashion Among Female Undergraduates And Its Effects In The Sight Of Beholders In A University Of Education, Nigeria.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Many definitions have been resorted to by synthesis of literature in trying to arrive at the word fashion. Jeanette and others define fashion as ‘a continuous process of change in style of dress that is acceptable and followed by large segment of the public at any particular time’, Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, defines fashion as ‘the prevailing style during a particular time’. Paul Nystran, an economics Professor who was the first to apply economics to fashion, defined fashion as ‘Nothing more or less than the prevailing style at any given time’.

Effects Of Gender And Parenting Styles On The Acquisition Of Democratic Values By Nigerian Youths In Secondary Schools, Alade Abiodun Apr 2011

Effects Of Gender And Parenting Styles On The Acquisition Of Democratic Values By Nigerian Youths In Secondary Schools, Alade Abiodun

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It is obvious that every level of education is expected to empower learners with adequate knowledge, attitude and skills relevant to build the society. This informed policy makers to formulate educational goals and values that can mould individuals towards such empowerment for effective life in the pluralistic society. Thus, education as an instrument per excellence for national development identified by the National Policy on Education (2004, revised) fosters the building of: (i) A free and democratic society; (ii) A just and egalitarian society; (iii) A united, strong and self-reliant nation; (iv) A great and dynamic economy and (v) A land …

Language Policy And Planning For Education In Cameroon And Nigeria, Ruth Adebile Apr 2011

Language Policy And Planning For Education In Cameroon And Nigeria, Ruth Adebile

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The goals and overall philosophy of education in any nation is the pre-requisite to the formation of language policy and planning for education. Language generally is always a crucial phenomenon and it becomes more crucial and controversial when it has to do with formulation of policies in education (Dada, 2005) part of the reason for this is simply because most of the language problems in many African countries are colonial legacies. The language problem is even volatile in some African countries like Cameroon and Nigeria. As it is going to be expanciated in this write-up, both Cameroon and Nigeria are …

Lateness: A Major Problem Confronting School Administrators In Delta State, Nigeria, Famous Dafiaghor Apr 2011

Lateness: A Major Problem Confronting School Administrators In Delta State, Nigeria, Famous Dafiaghor

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Amongst other components of any organisation, human beings are the most difficult to manage. Folks pose the most problems to administrators any where in the world, not excluding school organisations as learning factories in Delta State, Nigeria. Many authors have posited as a matter of fact that it is easier to manage the financial and material components of any organisation than to manage the human component. They insinuate that “it is easier to manage even animals than to manage human beings” (Nakpodia, 2006; Peretomode, 1991; Peretomode, 2001; Ubogu, 2004; Emore, 2005; Ukoshi, 2004). Thus, in the school system, the school …

Perceptions Of Success Factors That Influence Positive Educational/Vocational Attitudes Of Inner-City Black Males: Some Considerations For School Leaders, Shedrick Mccall Apr 2011

Perceptions Of Success Factors That Influence Positive Educational/Vocational Attitudes Of Inner-City Black Males: Some Considerations For School Leaders, Shedrick Mccall

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The problem is how to determine factors influencing the perception of success for Black males who started the race behind other ethnic groups in America (Hacker, 1995). Schultz (1969) wrote a book, Coming up Black: Patterns of Ghetto Socialization. In his book, he stated that poverty hinders progress because it truly handicaps Blacks by giving them an unequal playing field. Schultz (1969) further stated that inner-city youths, especially Black males, have a struggle. He contended that the young inner-city males do not have fathers or positive male role models, which increases the likelihood of failure. Therefore, many Black males turn …

Managing Change In An Organisation-An Overview, Frank Gwavuya

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In any organization, effective change management is a fundamental requirement for the success and continued survival of any business concern. It is almost impossible to read two consecutive issues of business papers in most countries without encountering at least one article about some organisation undergoing a major strategic or structural change. New units are acquired and old units sold off; divisions are created or combined; an organization moves from a functional to a matrix organizational structure; the authority of the chief executive officer or a staff department is increased or decreased; the new chief executive officer institutes a major reorganization; …

Philosophy As A Tool For Sustainable Development: A Contemporary Issue In Nigeria Educational System, E.D. Nakpodia Apr 2011

Philosophy As A Tool For Sustainable Development: A Contemporary Issue In Nigeria Educational System, E.D. Nakpodia

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The place of Philosophy as a discipline in our world today cannot be overemphasized. It is a truism that the present day Nigeria is a product of what the colonialists handed over to the Nigerian rulers on Independence day, 1st of October 1960. It was a government that was born in a state of uncertainty and was soon to manifest clearly in a bloody civil war which nobody prays to ever witness again. In our world today, people talk about various models, theories, and other strategies towards achieving development. Nigeria is certainly not an exception.
