Millennial Sex Habits: The Sexual Attitudes And Behaviors Of Unmarried Undergraduate Males At A Small, Private, Christian Institution, Travis T. York Jan 2010

Millennial Sex Habits: The Sexual Attitudes And Behaviors Of Unmarried Undergraduate Males At A Small, Private, Christian Institution, Travis T. York

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This study analyzed the sexual attitudes and behaviors of 211 unmarried, traditionally-aged undergraduate males at a small, private, Christian, liberal arts institution in western Pennsylvania. As hypothesized, data were largely consistent with millennial theorists’ projections about current students’ decline in sexual activity in comparison to data from the past. The results of this project also confirm the relevance of the Social Norms Theory to the study of sexual behavior (Berkowitz, 2003). Descriptive data and definitions of sex, virginity, and abstinence are also discussed. This research suggests that student development professionals should invest in education and programming that provides accurate statistics …

A Capsule Of The International History And Philosophy Of Andragogy To 2010, John A. Henschke Edd Jan 2010

A Capsule Of The International History And Philosophy Of Andragogy To 2010, John A. Henschke Edd

Adult Education Faculty Works

This capsule on the International History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited (with a few exceptions) to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, presents aspect of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts prior to the time in which they appeared in published form. To date, more than 330 documents have been discovered, but space limitation in this chapter allowed the inclusion of only a fraction of that number. Each …

Solving The Problem: Improving Retention In Higher Education, Marcia Heiman Jan 2010

Solving The Problem: Improving Retention In Higher Education, Marcia Heiman

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

As our nation looks ahead in this new century, an educated workforce is more important than ever. Yet college retention is a major problem. Last year, for the first time in 20 years, retention to the sophomore year dropped in the nation’s four-year colleges (Bushong, 2009). For minority students on predominantly white campuses – that is, most four-year colleges and universities – the graduation rate is unacceptably low. For example, less than half of black males graduate from four-year college programs within six years – 20 percentage points less than their white peers (Carey, 2008). And student persistence in community …

Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction Among Civilian Staff In The Zimbabwe Republic Police, Frank Gwavuya Jan 2010

Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction Among Civilian Staff In The Zimbabwe Republic Police, Frank Gwavuya

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Southern Africa has been witnessing an upsurge in the departure of technical expertise in virtually all sectors over the last five years (Stilwell, 2003). This has resulted in qualified personnel seeking greener pastures abroad. Movement of people from developing countries towards the developed world especially Europe and the Americas has been conspicuous. Anecdotes show that during the 1990s, total migration of professionals towards Western Europe and North America accounted for 30% of the flows registered throughout the world (ILO, 1996). It is estimated that in the year 2000 approximately 175million people, or 2.9% of the world’s population, were living outside …

Influence And Relationship Of Birth Order And Secondary School Students’ Academic Achievement, A. Ositoye, Muyiwa Adeyemi, Ade Onabarniro Jan 2010

Influence And Relationship Of Birth Order And Secondary School Students’ Academic Achievement, A. Ositoye, Muyiwa Adeyemi, Ade Onabarniro

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Academic achievement or the level of academic success is the main concern of all stakeholders of education. High achievement has, however, become a great task before the students but it is sad to observe that poor academic achievement were recorded both at the secondary and tertiary levels of education in Nigeria (Tenibiaje, 2009).

Conflict In The Community College Classroom., Will Carpenter Jan 2010

Conflict In The Community College Classroom., Will Carpenter

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Violence and aggression in the community college classroom is something overlooked by many. “In a given month, 11 percent of all students reported having something stolen, 1.3 percent of all students reported being physically assaulted, and 12 percent of all teachers reported having something stolen, 5 percent of these thefts occurring by way of force, weapons, or threats” (Barton, 1998). At this level of education, it is typically assumed that students will act professionally and know how to control anger and situations of conflict. On the contrary, at this level, students may be under more stress than elementary and/or secondary …

Implementing An Assessment Program: A Faculty Member’S Perspective, Robert Becker Jan 2010

Implementing An Assessment Program: A Faculty Member’S Perspective, Robert Becker

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In 1999, after several exploratory meetings, the college administration established an ad-hoc interdisciplinary assessment committee to begin a conversation about what students were taught and how faculty knew what was learned and what was not. At the first meeting of this committee, composed of representatives of the college’s seventeen teaching departments, the library, student affairs, institutional planning, research, and assessment, and academic affairs, several impediments to a formalized college-wide assessment initiative immediately became apparent. While a culture of informal assessment already existed as instructors daily grappled with effectively teaching their students, the notion of a widespread institutionalized plan was alien. …

Perceptions Of Teachers & School Leaders On Competencies Of Teachers & Training Needs, Sailesh Sharma Jan 2010

Perceptions Of Teachers & School Leaders On Competencies Of Teachers & Training Needs, Sailesh Sharma

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Government of Thailand recognizes the need of Human Resources Development of teaching professionals as a key to maintain standards of education at an internationally competitive level. Considering the large number of teachers currently in service whose expertise in new teaching and learning approaches will be critical in implementing the educational reform, it is surprising that very little work has been done in planning, developing and delivering training in new teaching and learning methods. The biggest impact of the teaching and learning reform rests with the teachers currently in the classrooms and yet little attention has been given to (a) developing …

Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway: The Student-Athlete?, James Satterfield, Chris Croft, Michael Godfrey Jan 2010

Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway: The Student-Athlete?, James Satterfield, Chris Croft, Michael Godfrey

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In today’s world of higher education, intercollegiate athletics, and complex society there is much focus and attention placed on the student-athlete. Regardless of the region of the country, the level of the school or the specific sport, the student-athlete experiences a high level of public and private scrutiny, which is often negative. According to Watson (2006), the general perception of college student-athletes is that they are privileged, pampered, lazy, out-of-control, and primarily attend school with the sole purpose of participating in intercollegiate athletics. This stereotype is often held by people who do not fully understand the relationship between the student-athlete …

Teachers, Never Stop Learning Journal Article For Academic Leadership, Luanne Schnase Jan 2010

Teachers, Never Stop Learning Journal Article For Academic Leadership, Luanne Schnase

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Teachers, facilitators, and instructors must understand their students in order to affect learning. Understanding who learners are and how they develop cognitively, emotionally, and intellectually will help instructors create learning opportunities which will enhance student knowledge. The same is true when it is the teacher who becomes the student. Whether the readers of this article are teachers, administrators, or professional development providers, adults must understand how adults learn, and teachers should allow themselves the opportunity to remember what it is like to be a learner (Brookfield, 1995).

Home Learning Activities: A Feasible Practice For Increasing Parental Involvement, Heather Bower, Joelle Powers, Laurie Graham Jan 2010

Home Learning Activities: A Feasible Practice For Increasing Parental Involvement, Heather Bower, Joelle Powers, Laurie Graham

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Research has substantiated the importance of increased parental involvement in schools for improving student academic outcomes. Parental involvement in education has been found to be positively associated with child academic success across multiple populations and age groups (Gutman & McLoyd, 2000; Lareau, 2000; López, Scribner & Mahitivanichcha, 2001; Steinburg, Lamborn, Dornbusch, & Darling, 1992). Results suggest that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education, long lasting academic, social, and emotional benefits occur (Chavkin, 2006). For example, Hill and Craft (2003) found that increased parental involvement leads to early social competence, which predicts academic success. Similarly, parental involvement in …

Implications Of Collaboration In Education, Stephanie Laymon Med Jan 2010

Implications Of Collaboration In Education, Stephanie Laymon Med

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

There are many examples of collaboration in education. Superintendents must collaborate with department heads, principals, teacher associations, and state agencies. Principals must collaborate with teachers, parents, student organizations, and local agencies. Teacher educators must collaborate within the University as well as with local education agencies and pre-service teachers. Special educators must collaborate with parents, agencies, regular education teachers, school psychologists, etc. While these examples in no way encompass the myriad forms of collaboration necessary in education, they bring clarity to the fact that no level of education is immune to collaboration.

Impact Of Variations In Distributed Leadership Frameworks On Implementing A Professional Development Initiative, Jeffrey Pedersen, Stuart Yager, Robert Yager Jan 2010

Impact Of Variations In Distributed Leadership Frameworks On Implementing A Professional Development Initiative, Jeffrey Pedersen, Stuart Yager, Robert Yager

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Educators, principals, and teachers alike, are being challenged with higher demands and requirements in preparing our future generations for the 21st century. Professional development for teachers is a key focus in school transformation efforts. School transformation in today’s educational system is dependent, in part, by how well teachers work together with their principal and colleagues (Louis, Leithwood, Wahlstrom, & Anderson, 2010). Recent research has focused on the role of the school principal and other site-based leaders in the implementation of professional development initiatives (Pedersen, Yager, & Yager, 2010). Principals play a key role in supporting and encouraging teachers’ professional development …

School Accreditation: An Opportunity For Administrator Professional Development, Trudy Salsberry, Annie Diederich Jan 2010

School Accreditation: An Opportunity For Administrator Professional Development, Trudy Salsberry, Annie Diederich

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

School accreditation is generally viewed as a means of assuring quality in terms of programs, personnel, services, and operations. Accreditation in P-12 schools is generally conducted by state agencies and/or non-profit organizations. One prominent non-profit organization, Advanced, is now “involved with 23,000 public and private schools and districts in 30 states and 65 countries and serving nearly 15 million students. This organization is generally considered one of the world’s largest educational communities and the recent creation of Advanced is the beginning of a new journey in the century-long histories of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement …

Teacher Factors In The Implementation Of Universal Basic Education Programme In Junior Secondary Schools In The South Senatorial District Of Delta State, Nigeria, E.D. Nakpodia Jan 2010

Teacher Factors In The Implementation Of Universal Basic Education Programme In Junior Secondary Schools In The South Senatorial District Of Delta State, Nigeria, E.D. Nakpodia

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The idea of universal Education was first mooted in 1955 when the universal primary education scheme was inaugurated by the government of Western Nigeria. The Eastern Nigeria government launched its own universal primary education in 1957. In Northern Nigeria, education was provided free by government in a bid to make children attend school (Adeyemi, 2007). Thus, at its onset, the universal primary education scheme had been undertaken by regional government. There was no Federal Government intervention until 1976 when the universal primary education (UPE) was launched to cover the whole country.

The Garage Of The Ivory Tower: The Importance Of The 21st Century Education Doctorate, Joshua Barnett, David Carlson Jan 2010

The Garage Of The Ivory Tower: The Importance Of The 21st Century Education Doctorate, Joshua Barnett, David Carlson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Making decisions about how to prepare students and teachers for the 21st century is a complex endeavor, and preparing the leaders of America’s schools – those responsible for leading the some 15,000 school districts, three million public education teachers, and 50 million public education students – is perhaps most complex of all. Educational administrators, like teachers, juggle competing interests and negotiate with multiple stakeholders simultaneously. Generating sustained school change often necessitates implementing policies that are rarely able to account for the varied and potentially competing issues that are situated locally. Therefore, preparing school leaders means providing them with the necessary …

Fostering Equity & Diversity In Faculty Recruitment, Janet Fleetwood, Nancy Aebersold Jan 2010

Fostering Equity & Diversity In Faculty Recruitment, Janet Fleetwood, Nancy Aebersold

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Participating in a search for a new faculty member, whether as a search committee member, search committee chairperson, department chairperson, or dean, poses unique challenges for those in academics. Though we may be an expert in conducting rigorous research, a prolific writer, or a gifted “sage on the stage” in the classroom, few of us are also experts in academic recruiting. All too frequently we bumble through the search process, hoping fervently that the person we ultimately hire – the person who will likely be our colleague for decades – is someone who will turn out to be a serious …

Performance-Reward Based For Teachers: Implications For Educational Outcomes In Nigerian Secondary Schools, Samuel Oyebolu, K.O. Muraina Jan 2010

Performance-Reward Based For Teachers: Implications For Educational Outcomes In Nigerian Secondary Schools, Samuel Oyebolu, K.O. Muraina

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Performance-related pay for teachers is being introduced in many countries, amidst much controversy and opposition from teachers and unions alike (Denver, 2006; and Houston, 2006). The rationale for these programmes is the notion that incentive pay may motivate teachers to improve their performance. For example, in early December 2000, the Israeli Ministry of Education unveiled a new teachers’ bonus experiment in forty-nine Israeli high schools. The main feature of the programme was an individual performance bonus paid to teachers on the basis of their own students’ achievements. The experiment included all English, Hebrew, Arabic, and Mathematics teachers who taught classes …

Perceived Efficacy Of Marriage Counseling In Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study Of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijebu Ode, J.T.B. Oluwatimilehin Jan 2010

Perceived Efficacy Of Marriage Counseling In Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study Of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijebu Ode, J.T.B. Oluwatimilehin

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It has long been recognized that the major causes of difficulties of students are anxieties and psychological stresses (Adeyemo, 2000; Owuamanam, 2000; and Akinleye, 2003). According to Adeyemo (2000), concern over studies, unusual physical complaint and difficulties with interpersonal relationship have often led to successful or attempted suicide among students. Students in Nigeria tertiary institutions have a great need for guidance and counseling. This assertion is largely informed by the cultural conflict between the Western and African values whereby students are engaged in developing both occupational and social identities. This seems to support the view of Owuamanam (2000)who reported that …

Presenting The Servant Leadership Model As A Panacea To Bad Leadership In Tertiary Education In West Africa, John Ekundayo Jan 2010

Presenting The Servant Leadership Model As A Panacea To Bad Leadership In Tertiary Education In West Africa, John Ekundayo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Tertiary education in West Africa presently is fading in value compared with the last two or three decades when graduates of universities in Nigeria and Ghana were highly rated by world ranked institutions in Europe and North America. In many West African tertiary institutions there are chronic and critical challenges impeding quality delivery of education to the citizens. Some of these lead to avoidable wastes in time, financial and human resources. In Nigeria for instance, there are many cases of students’ unrest leading to wanton and unwarranted destruction of properties and sometimes human lives. In addition, lecturers and non-academic employees …

Rebranding Nigeria Through Educational Process For A Better Future: A Call For Policy Review And Development For Creating Standards In Business Education, Kayode Bolarinwa, Lukman Adeola, Sunday Ojetunde Jan 2010

Rebranding Nigeria Through Educational Process For A Better Future: A Call For Policy Review And Development For Creating Standards In Business Education, Kayode Bolarinwa, Lukman Adeola, Sunday Ojetunde

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Business education is vital for success in virtually every career. All citizens must apply business skills and concepts to meet the challenges of a changing society and workplace (Smith, 2006). Business instruction is organized to prepare individuals for occupations in administrative office systems, accounting and finance, management, and computer information systems. It is the enterprise of education directed at the study and research of the field of business. It includes secondary education and higher education or university education, with the greatest activity in the latter. It is often or almost always oriented toward preparing students for the practice of an …

Reclaiming Moral Development Through A Course Development Rubric, Timothy Daughterty, Lisa Johnson Jan 2010

Reclaiming Moral Development Through A Course Development Rubric, Timothy Daughterty, Lisa Johnson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Moral development (growth in personal and social responsibility) was originally a primary goal of higher education in the United States and continues to be cited in many college catalogs, but few institutions currently make a commitment to intentionally addressing personal and social responsibility through the core experiences of their students (Hersh & Schneider, 2005). The processes of specialization and fragmentation, along with the pursuit of value-free inquiry, have led institutions to retreat from investing in moral development as a component of robust liberal education (McNeel,1994). As “colleges and universities are increasingly under pressure to offer educational programs of immediate economic …
