Examining The Educational Experiences Of Community Day School Graduates: A Narrative Inquiry, Willie J. Jones Iii Dec 2019

Examining The Educational Experiences Of Community Day School Graduates: A Narrative Inquiry, Willie J. Jones Iii

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Community day school graduates enter society with decisions about college, career, and work. Community day schools operate as a non-traditional education system that provides a separate and often unique education to many disenfranchised students, with lessened accountability protocols to assess whether these systems prepare graduates for life after high school. The number of community day schools and enrollment is declining, due in part to excessive changes within the law and stricter guidelines required to be met.

Monological Practices, Authoritative Discourses And The Missing "C" In Digital Communities, Vicki A. Hosek, Lara J. Handsfield

Faculty Publications - College of Education

The purpose of this study was to examine teacher decisions surrounding opportunities for student voice, experiences and beliefs in digital classroom communities. The teachers’ decisions reflect monologic rather than dialogic teacher pedagogies which prompted the authors to ask the following question: What led to these teacher-centered practices in digital environments? Authoritative discourses in school policies and a missing connection between critical pedagogies and teachers’ technology practices are examined in light of teachers’ decisions to engage in monologic and/or dialogic teaching practices. The authors propose professional development and research that emphasize pedagogy that supports student voice as foundational to practices involving …

Toward Critical Counseling: A Content Analysis Of Critical Race Theory And Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Community College Counselor Education, Lyman A. Insley

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Background: Prior to the early 1990s, most counselor preparation programs did not have multicultural competencies. Therefore, a call was made for the use of multicultural competencies in counselor preparation programs. Yet, the popularization of multicultural competencies of this time in education had a Eurocentric bent, a kind of colorblindness

More recently, scholars confirmed that these Eurocentric multicultural competencies had become the primary template from which counselor preparation programs taught culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy. Therefore, a call was made for the use of critical race theory (CRT) in counselor preparation programs to challenge and change Eurocentric cultural competence.

Purpose: This …

07. Transformational Leadership, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

The term transformational leadership was first introduced by James V. Downton in 1973, and has been the focus of researchers since the early 1980s (Northouse 161). After years of success and prosperity, the United States economy crashed into what is now known as the recession. The president at that time, Ronald Reagan, put forth many changes, such as cutting taxes and building up the military to help the country recover. During this time, the US imported more goods than it exported, therefore endangering manufacturing sector. Through such abysmal times, it was important for President Reagan and his government to motivate …

08. Leader-Member Exchange Theory, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

Leader-Member Exchange Theory became the focus of research in the late 1970s. Before the LMX theory, researchers thought of leadership as a process with consistent relationships between a leader and every follower. LMX changed that idea by theorizing that a leader has different relationships with each of their followers. Early research focused on the formation of in-groups and out-groups while later research shifted the focus to how LMX changed organizational effectiveness.
