Effects Of Points Exchangeable For Grades On Junior High Mathematics Students, James Edward Perkins
Master of Education Theses
This paper presents the effects of a token system used in a regular eighth grade mathematics class. Two classes containing 21 and 23 students were implemented. The study was designed to increase attendance, behavior, and mathematical achievement in a test group and measure the effects against a control group. The scores revealed a significant difference only in attendance favoring the test group.
Recommendations included pairing stronger reinforcers with the points used and suggestions for future research.

Counseling For The Seventies: A Compendium Of Published Articles, Joseph Henry Koch
Counseling For The Seventies: A Compendium Of Published Articles, Joseph Henry Koch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This article, which appeared in the January '72 edition of The School Counselor, talks about what counselors have done, doing, and what the author, a school counselor, thinks they should be doing. He discusses some factors operating to narrow the counselor's role: the student stereotype of counselors as "schedule-changers," the administrative view of counseling as a clerical function, the "psychiatric myth" which casts any person in a helping profession in the role of dream analyst and explorer of the dark unconscious. The writer sees counseling as the major pupil personnel service available on the school campus. Counseling should be concerned …

The Effect Of A Learning Skills Course Including Group Counseling On Low Achievers In The Community College, Paul E. Borg
All Master's Theses
A Learning Skills course consisting of study skills, goal direction, and self-understanding was tested among volunteer community college low achievers. Treatment integrated didactic, group discussion, and affective experiences in 18 hour-long sessions. Nineteen subjects received treatment; 25 subjects formed a matched control group; and 41 non-volunteers formed two additional control groups. An apparent trend toward GPA improvement was noted for all groups, but all measurements on GPA and a study survey were non-significant.

The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher
The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher
Dissertations and Theses
It is a basic premise of this thesis that an environmental crisis exists in the world today and has been worsening at least since World War II. The crisis is evident in the population explosion, the deteriorating air and water quality, and the depletion of our natural resources. With the feeling that all persons must become aware, concerned, and involved with the environmental crisis if the trend is to be reversed, this study is concerned with one segment of the population – high school students.
Sociologists, and especially human ecologists, have not been concerned professionally with the environmental crisis, but …

Retention As A Function Of Competition And Cooperation In Learning, Neil Orin Combelic
All Master's Theses
Educators in our school systems continually try to determine what kind of motivational atmosphere should be established to obtain the fullest potential from every student that enters an institution of higher learning. Since our society is built on competition, many educators would like to increase competition among students in the classroom. Other educators point out that too much competition can be harmful, and would like to see students cooperatively motivated in the classroom.

A Comparison Of Emphasis Of Training And On-The-Job Effectiveness Of Media Personnel, Roy E. Williams
A Comparison Of Emphasis Of Training And On-The-Job Effectiveness Of Media Personnel, Roy E. Williams
All Master's Theses
It has long been recognized in our society that formal training plays a strong role in the development of attitudes, and that attitudes are important determinants of behavior. Consequently, the behavior of one whose formal training has been oriented in a particular direction is often somewhat different from the behavior of one whose training has been oriented in a different direction. Does the training orientation of instructional materials personnel affect their on-the-job effectiveness? Will a person who is primarily oriented toward print materials be more or less effective in promoting the use of instructional materials than one whose orientation is …

The Effects Of Contingency Management On Reading Achievement Of Institutionalized Offenders, Forest J. C. Hertlein
The Effects Of Contingency Management On Reading Achievement Of Institutionalized Offenders, Forest J. C. Hertlein
All Master's Theses
The hypotheses to be tested in this study are concerned with the use of contingency management. In general, the theory states that behavior normally occurring at a low rate may increase when it is followed by activities which are highly desirable to the student (Premack, 1965). Also suggested in the theory is that a response does not have a zero operant level (Bijou and Baer, 1961). It was assumed, then, that institutionalized offenders enrolled in remedial reading classes have an operant level of some degree for a specific response that could be strengthened by positively reinforcing that response. Because the …
