A Multidimensional Perspective Of Faculty Mentoring And Job Satisfaction During The First Year Of Teaching At Lindenwood University, Carla Mueller May 2012

A Multidimensional Perspective Of Faculty Mentoring And Job Satisfaction During The First Year Of Teaching At Lindenwood University, Carla Mueller

Dissertations

Higher education requires exemplary faculty to provide a high quality education to college-level students. When faculty is new to an institution, issues of transition can affect job satisfaction negatively. The literature concludes that job satisfaction can affect retention of quality personnel. As a result, college and university administrators have addressed this concern with the development of mentoring programs for faculty new to their institutions. One of the goals of mentoring programs is based on the assumption that mentoring can affect job satisfaction in a positive way; thus, involvement in such programs will ensure faculty members are more likely to be …

Perceived Impact Of Quality In A 21st Century Community Learning Center Out-Of-School Time Program: A Case Study, Patricia Ann Wright

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concern for the safety, education and well-being of children during out-of-school time is helping to change the landscape and priorities of families, educators and policy-makers. Changes in family structure and society have presented the need for quality out-of-school time programs. The changing family structure caused by both parents working outside the home, the advent of the single-parent household, the necessity of federally mandated standardized testing for student achievement, certain criminal activities and the expanding population of children have contributed to the question of how to protect children and enrich their lives during out-of-school time hours. The purpose of this intrinsic …

A Holy Curiosity: Transformative Self-Directed Learning To Breakthrough New Knowledge In The Case Of Einstein, Deanna Lynn Vogt

Dissertations

The case of Einstein’s discovery of the relativity theory, explored with grounded theory methodology, illustrates a type of self-directed learning characterized by personal and non-personal, or technical, transformative learning, the result of which is iconic original, breakthrough learning. This dissertation explores three aspects of adult learning which are novel in adult education.

First, this study of breakthrough process, for which there is only one apparent precedent in adult education, considers how an individual goes about a self-directed learning project that revolutionizes a field. In this regard, the concept of original learning, as opposed to transmitted learning, presents itself as a …

The Relationship Between The Pedagogical Use Of Differentiated Instructional Strategies And 3rd, 4th, And 5th Grade Language Arts Achievement, Kenitra Lasha Barnes

Dissertations

Today’s classrooms are comprised of students who perform on a myriad of levels. As a result of both state and federal mandates, educators have been charged with the task of ensuring that all students master the required grade level benchmarks at the end of each school term. The challenge in carrying out that duty is finding strategic ways of reaching all students, regardless of their performance levels. The stricter state mandates have placed many classroom teachers in a compromising position that leaves them with no time to remediate students who may struggle with mastering a skill and minimal time to …

Relationship Among Demographic, Academic And Curriculum Characteristics, Emphasizing Arts Education And Critical Thinking Performance In 12th Grade High School Students, Leslie Rowntree Black

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The ability to think critically is an important condition for success in school and life. Promoting the development of critical thinking skills through arts education would have an impact on curriculum developments, specifically the utilization of study in the arts as a learning strategy and the revisiting of the purpose of arts education. Arts education has the unique capacity to teach children to think creatively, imaginatively, and critically, while also benefiting subject-specific curriculum (Deasy, 2002).

Eisner (2005) asserts that the arts are as essential to students' intellectual development as study in mathematics or the sciences. The purpose of this non-experimental, …

Science Faculty Grading Practices On Quantitative Problems: Are Their Values Consistent With Their Practices?, Jeffrey Barney, Jacinta Macinta Apr 2012

Science Faculty Grading Practices On Quantitative Problems: Are Their Values Consistent With Their Practices?, Jeffrey Barney, Jacinta Macinta

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Grading practices can send a powerful message to students about what is expected. Research in physics education has identified a misalignment between what college instructors value and their actual scoring of quantitative student solutions. This work identified three values that guide grading decisions: (1) a desire to see students’ reasoning, (2) a readiness to deduct points from solutions with obvious errors and a reluctance to deduct points from solutions that might be correct, and (3) a tendency to assume correct reasoning when solutions are ambiguous. When values are in conflict, the conflict is resolved by placing the burden of proof …

Understanding Resistance To Standardization In Education: The Tragedy Of The Commons As A Theoretical Framework, Grinell Smith, Colette Rabin

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to articulate how a theory, developed in 1968 by Garrett Hardin to describe how shared resources, or “commons” can become depleted, also elucidates the mechanism by which standardization of educational outcomes and assessment have come to dominate current education discourse. We then present results of a case study of a school struggling to succeed within a context of a district’s hyper-focus on standardized measures of success, and employ the theory to illustrate its usefulness to explain what we found at the school site. We believe this theoretical framework provides interesting perspectives on current trends …

The Effects Of Content Knowledge On Teacher Efficacy Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers Within Three Mid-South States, Daphne Latrice Jones

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined secondary mathematics teachers' self-efficacy within six school districts. In addition, the relationship between teacher efficacy on teachers' demographic characteristics of gender, number of years teaching, number of mathematics courses completed, achievement status of school, and grade level were studied. Research linked teachers' efficacy to student achievement (Goddard, Hoy, & Hoy, 2000; Tournaki & Podell, 2005). The number of mathematics courses completed indicated the content knowledge of teachers (Hill & Ball, 2009; Wilson et al., 2002). Data for the study were collected from a sample of 138 secondary mathematics teachers in three mid-south states using the Teacher Sense …

The Role Of Civic Participation In National And School Curricula, John Ainley, Tim Friedman Apr 2012

The Role Of Civic Participation In National And School Curricula, John Ainley, Tim Friedman

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

Civic and citizenship education is increasingly conceptualized in national curricula within a lifelong learning perspective that encompasses formal curricula (that specify content and approaches in a subject or set of subjects), non-formal curricula (through co-curricular activities in schools) and informal curricula (through a school and classroom ethos that embodies citizenship values). One review of education policies in Europe documents attempts to encourage ‘active citizenship’ supported by ‘democratic schools’ offering a ‘participatory school culture’. However, there is evidence of a gap between declarations of principle and the implementation of these principles in schools as well as between policies and practices. This …

Social Origin And Citizenship Participation In Latin American Schools, Juan Castillo Apr 2012

Social Origin And Citizenship Participation In Latin American Schools, Juan Castillo

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

Empirical research in political participation has consistently shown that participation is characteristic of those with higher socio-economic status and formal education (Brady, Verba, & Schlozman, 1995; Lijphart, 1997; Dalton, 1988; Han, 2009; Marien, Hooghe, & Quintelier, 2010). Socio-economic status differences among citizens are accentuated in societies with high economic inequality as the Latin American ones (De Ferranti et al., 2003; Deininger & Squire, 1996; Dion, 2007; Hoffman & Centeno, 2003; Korzeniewicz & Smith, 2000), and therefore it would be expected to find political inequality in terms of participation in this region (Côrtes & Dubrow, 2011). Such a link is not …
