The Establishment Of Sequenced Skills In Language Arts, Reading, And Mathematics For Grades K Through 6 Of The Hoopeston-East Lynn Public Schools, Chalmers E. Flint
Masters Theses
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this field study was to establish a list of sequenced skills for grades kindergarten through six for language arts, reading, and mathematics. Furthermore, a need existed for the evaluation of student/classroom progression in the mastery of skills. Therefore, this study consisted of the following two tasks: (1) Development of a list of sequenced skills which are to be utilized in conjunction with objectives that are located within the textbook of each subject area. (2) Development of a record keeping process to monitor students’ academic progress of skills mastered within language arts, reading, and mathematics …
Silent Reading Before Oral Reading On The Iri: Implication For Diagnosis And Instruction, Catherine P. Benedetti
Silent Reading Before Oral Reading On The Iri: Implication For Diagnosis And Instruction, Catherine P. Benedetti
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to test the effect of silent pre-reading on the number of oral reading errors a student makes on an IRI. Twenty children read passages silently and then orally read passages without pre-reading. The results supported the null hypothesis that there would be no statistically significant difference on oral reading performances for disabled second and fourth graders. Implications for diagnosis and instruction are discussed.

A Comparative Study Between A Readiness Measure And An Achievement Test As Measured By The Metropolitan Readiness Test And The Science Research Associates Achievement Series, Linda L. Ditchburn
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this research was to complete an experimental study which would investigate the nature of the relationship between readiness and achievement. Data collection included two components: scores from the Metropolitan Readiness Test (MRT), administered at the kindergarten level; and scores from the Science Research Associates (SRA) Achievement Series, administered to the same 284 subjects at the fourth grade level. Correlation coefficients between these two tests were determined for all subtests, total tests, composites, and the Educational Ability Series. Since correlation coefficients between the MRT and the SRA evidenced significantly positive relation ships, the implication is clear that performance …

Homogeneous Versus Heterogeneous Grouping Of Low Ability First Grade Students And The Effect On Reading Achievement, Velinda O. Hickey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of homogeneous versus heterogeneous grouping on reading achievement with low ability first grade students. Using a modification of a posttest-only control group design and applying a t-test for independent samples', it was found that the 18 students placed in the homogenous group achieved significantly. higher reading levels in the Holt Basic Reading Management Program than the 18 heterogeneously grouped students. In addition, it was also found that students' placed in the homogeneous group achieved significantly higher means on two of the 23 reading skill subtests. In contrast, it was found …

At the present time we are all dissatisfied with intelligence testing. And we have been so, more or less, for the past twenty years. Tests have been criticized by researchers involved in experimental studies of intelligence, by administrators concerned with the applications of intelligence tests, and most importantly, by the users of these tests. So you may well ask 'Why haven't test constructors done -something about these criticisms?' And of course there is no really crushing retort to this. However the problem that has faced, and still faces, people trying to construct intelligence tests is the very diversity of the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varied Amounts Of Oral Reading On Reading Comprehension In A First Grade Classroom, Melinda Anne Dickson
A Study Of The Effect Of Varied Amounts Of Oral Reading On Reading Comprehension In A First Grade Classroom, Melinda Anne Dickson
All Master's Theses
In this study an experimental group was compared with a control group to determine what effect, if any, varying amounts of oral reading would have on the comprehension scores of first grade pupils. The two groups received identical reading instruction with the expectation of oral reading. The control group read aloud twice as much as the experimental group during each oral reading session. Using standard statistical procedure no significant difference was found between the two groups. Therefore, a reduction of the amount of oral reading could be initiated into the reading program described while still maintaining an acceptable level of …

A Study Of The Academic Effect Of Non-Promotion In Yakima Elementary Schools, James R. Seamons
A Study Of The Academic Effect Of Non-Promotion In Yakima Elementary Schools, James R. Seamons
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine if there exists any statistical evidence that supports the commonly held belief that retaining students in grade school does not improve academic performance.
The cumulative records of all children retained, who met the criteria outlined in Chapter III, were examined. Their academic grades were recorded in nine subject areas. Improved performance during the retained year over the previous ones and during the years after retention over the years before retention, was very significant. This improvement was maintained in the years after retention.
An analysis of the data gives strong evidence supporting retention …

All Master's Theses
Two matched groups of first grade students, one of which received a perceptual-motor training program, were compared by a series of tests to determine whether those children having received such training had higher achievement than those with no training.
In overall achievement, non significant differences were found between the two groups. Significant differences were found as the I.Q., perceptual-motor ability, and rating on teacher rating scales with the experimental group making higher gains. The average and slow children of the experimental group did show significantly higher gains in overall achievement than the control group. No differences were found with the …
