Head Teacher's Role In School Improvement, Zulfiqar Ali

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

After completion of my studies at Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), I reported back to my parent organization Aga Khan Education Service for Pakistan in the first week of July 2002. I was posted in Aga Khan Girls High School Ovirk, Garamchashma as a headmaster on August 5, 2002. This school is situated in a very backward area of district Chitral. After joining the school I held meetings with teachers and members of the school management committee to introduce myself and also to get their views about the future of the school. A Reflective Paper, Yasmeen Bano

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

After graduating from the AKU-IED in 1998, I worked as the head teacher of a secondary school and am now working as the Program Officer with a team of PDTs for various schools. In both the roles, I got enough opportunities to work for programme development, teacher education and school improvement. I got opportunities to work in the school as a part of the school staff and I also got a chance to work for the schools as a part of the resource team. Based on the reflection of these experiences, I have drawn some lessons for school-based teacher educators. …

School Leadership In Pakistan: Exploring The Headteacher’S Role, Tim Simkins, Charles Sisum, Muhammad Memon

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

There is a good deal of consensus in the literature about the key role of leadership – especially that of the headteacher – in facilitating school improvement. This article explores the issue of headship in the context of schools in a specific developing country context, that of Pakistan. Drawing on 2 studies of the experience of headteachers in Karachi, the article identifies and explores the key variables that may contribute to a sense of personal efficacy for these heads, namely the expectations generated by the …

A Follow-Up Of Professional Development Of Educational Leaders: Implications For School Improvement, Muhammad Memon, Fauzia Reza

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The paper presents an account of the processes, outcomes and challenges associated with a follow-up study after the completion of a professional development programme in educational management for senior education officers from Sindh. Prior to induction to their jobs, the district education officers, principals of elementary colleges of education and higher secondary schools are not formally exposed to any new educational management and leadership practices. As a result, most of them remain unaware of the tasks and demands of their role, therefore, they tend to maintain a status quo position rather than engaging in change strategies for improving the quality …

Use Of Reflective Journal In An In-Service Teacher Education Programme: Some Implications For School Improvement, Shahid Siddiqui, Muhammad Memon

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

A considerable amount of research conducted in Europe and elsewhere except in Pakistan indicates that the in-service teacher education programmes facilitated in the implementation and institutionalization of change at school level geared towards the school improvement process (Dalin et.al, 1992). In the past, the in-service education programmes for teachers in Pakistan received little attention of the government since its focus was on the quantitative expansion rather than qualitative augmentation of education. The teachers who attended in-service education programmes found their experiences as a ‘luxury activity’. Most of them seemed to be interested in their traveling and daily allowances (T.A./D.A.) rather …
