To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has demanded large-scale collaboration within all organizations, including higher education, and taking teaching and learning seriously, in this moment, means leveraging partnerships to address the wicked (large, complex) problems cited by Bass (2020). These problems are not ours alone to solve; rather, we make the case for a “wicked consciousness,” an amalgam of perspectives, in educational development. Guided by intellectual humility, our success as educational developers ought to be measured by the quality of our collaborations as well as our ability to learn with others, form equitable partnerships, and lead others by our example.

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Due to the “wicked problem” of the Academy’s resistance to innovation, new teaching and learning programs struggle to become integrated into the fabric of the Academy, which slows the uptake of evidence-based practices. This wicked problem is rooted in the lack of slow, intentional mechanisms for cultural change in the Academy. In this article, we analyze the institutionalization journey of the Departmental Action Team (DAT) project, which is a model for slow, intentional change. Over the last four years, partnering with two campus centers for teaching and learning (CTLs) allowed the DAT project to make institutionalization progress.

Throughout the early 20th century, the relationship between higher education and the spread of epidemic disease evolved in the United States. Two notable epidemics of scarlet fever in 1915 and 1920 serve as a lens through which the larger roles of disease and higher education can be analyzed. By assessing the roles both the administration and the students played at Gettysburg College, then Pennsylvania College, historians can understand the process of combating health crises in the future. Self-Perceived Assessment Of Undergraduate Leaders Competencies Through A Leadership Development Program, Ryan D. Newton

This ex-post facto research study identified changes in participants’ self-perceptions of their competence in six key leadership competencies, as reported from a pre-training and post-training self-assessment. This study also identified the relationship between the participants’ self-reported changes and their persistence in enrollment at the University upon completion of the leadership training program. This quantitative study analyzed secondary data (N=201) from a large, four-year, public research institution in the southeast United States. Paired samples t-tests were used to determine that the self-reported change among participants was statistically significant (p<.05) from the pre- to the post-training self-assessment. Further, this study then examined the relationship between participants’ self-reported mean change and their persistence at the institution, defined as having graduated or continuing enrollment one year after completion of the leadership training program. A logistic regression was utilized to identify a negative predictive relationship between participants’ mean change and their likelihood of persistence. Implications for competency-based learning were discussed in relationship to student affairs practice.

A punctuated equilibrium refers to periods of stability, with little or no change, disrupted by a punctuated period of rapid and dramatic change. A non-experimental quantitative research design investigated the degree of influence that emotional intelligence exerted upon predicting leadership ability and job satisfaction for school administrators during the punctuated equilibrium initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) was disseminated electronically and completed by 33 school administrators from a variety of academic institutions. Study participant perceptions of emotional intelligence were statistically significantly predictive of self-perceived effectual leadership during a punctuated equilibrium. The predictive effect …

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of administrators at a Christian higher education institution during the COVID-19 crisis. The theoretical framework used for this study was revolutionary change theory (RCT). Qualitative data was gathered from structured interviews with executive administrators who led during the COVID-19 pandemic at an evangelical Christian liberal arts university that offered multiple degrees at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. Study findings described four main themes that emerged from the data: unpredictability, holistic community disruption, decisive adaptation, and team collaboration. The University of Dayton (UD) developed a Behavioral Health Workforce and Education Training (BHWET) program in response to a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) call for proposals. The university was awarded $1.92 million across four years to provide interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) opportunities to students in four of their graduate programs: school psychology, clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, and clinical psychology. This collaborative training initiative emphasizes interprofessional training and education for students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Racism remains a pervasive problem in society. Beyond iconic photographs that capture a distinct moment in history that prompt reflection on racism, art can be a powerful prompt to encourage society to reflect on this persistent difficult truth. Norman Rockwell and Samuel Bak reconfigured highly recognized photographs into portraits with the intention to explore questions about racism. The photographs and the art they inspired feature a single child in the midst of surrounding racism. Through the use of these images, Rockwell and Bak move audiences beyond the immediate consideration of racism, toward healing, and to future transformation.

This research utilized historical analysis, narrative inquiry, and oral history to document and analyze Black educational experiences in the Chapin, Dutch Fork, and Irmo communities during segregation and desegregation. Archival materials from the local school district offered insight into district leaders’ attitudes towards Richlex, the only public school available to the area’s Black students between 1953 and 1966, as well as the conditions that district leaders created for Black students and educators. This qualitative, phenomenological research study was designed to study the impact reflection has on student teachers. This study examines how and if reflection changes teaching practice. Specifically, how do student teachers use reflection to change practices during student teaching experiences? "Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting" (Cranton 1996, p. 211). This quantitative correlational study examined the strength of the correlations between school climate and teacher retention in rural, low-income elementary schools in North Carolina. In addition to identifying the overall relationship of school climate to teacher retention, this study examined the relationships between the overall climate factors (autonomy, community, induction, shared leadership, responsibility, and recognition) and teacher retention. Utilizing data from the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey (NC TWCS), 150 teachers were surveyed. My purpose for this study is to shed light on how the African-American community in a small Southern rural community experienced segregated schools and the long school desegregation process. Conflicts over school integration in urban centers like Little Rock drew the media's attention, but how small communities beyond the glare of the media fared is less well understood and documented. Archival data and contemporary media coverage provide a timeline and context for the experiences of this Black community, and oral history interviews were collected and analyzed to document the range of desegregation experiences.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), women are out earning men in the numbers of associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees awarded. When separated by race, Black women are the largest proportionally, representing 64 percent of bachelor’s degrees among Black women and men. Moreover, Black women account for 15 percent of all master’s degrees and 10 percent of earned doctoral degrees among all women.
