In “Defining Honors Culture,” Charlie Slavin’s statement that “[w]e surely all know students who are motivated, either by internal or external factors, but are not at all interested in taking risks or in stepping outside their comfort zone academically, socially, or culturally” reminded me of an annual discussion that I have at the national conference with Anne Rinn, an educational psychologist whose body of work includes research on how a postsecondary honors program may be a good fit for the high achieving student but perhaps not as good for the gifted student. Academic integrity has become a topic of increasing concern to faculty and administrators in colleges and universities across the country (Davis, Seeman, Chapman, & Rotstein, 2008; McCabe, Trevino, & Butterfield, 2002). Indeed, the level of concern has led to the development of highly articulated academic integrity procedures at a number of institutions of higher learning. In some instances, schools have felt the need to develop honor pledges and oaths, such as the honor oath recited voluntarily by graduate students entering the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto (Davis et al., 2008).

When the Roman poet Martial applied the Latin term for the kidnapping of slaves and children (“plagiario”) to those who stole his literary work (Epigrams I, 52), he became the first victim of plagiarism in its modern sense. Words are the author’s children, and one can understand how the author might suffer when another claims (or kidnaps) them. But plagiarism has further victims: the reader is tricked into thinking the plagiarist clever; the words themselves are cheapened by unauthorized replication; the scholarly enterprise, the community of authorship, and the process of writing all bear the marks of injury. …

As the director of an honors program just taking its first steps, I found myself returning again and again to the limits of my own role in shaping a nascent honors culture. Can honors administrators create an “honors culture”? Probably not, even in the case of a newly created honors program. This study made inquiry into teacher leadership and its relationship with school climate in American public schools by using the data from SASS 2003-04 by National Center for Education Statistics. The study was focused on the statistical assessment of public school teachers' perceptions of teacher leadership in the areas of school operation and classroom operation. Another aspect to be inquired was teachers' perceptions of school climate in the dimensions of school leadership and teacher collaboration.

The purpose of this study was to examine principals’ perception on what beginning teachers can do to ensure success in schools and what principals can do to assist them. Principals claimed that they assisted beginning teachers in mentoring, supervision, and performance evaluation. They advised beginning teachers for successful practices in effective teaching strategies, working with diverse learners, interacting with parents and guardians, handling disciplinary issues, confidentiality of student information, and continuing professional development.

As the accountability movement has gained momentum, policy makers and educators have strived to strike a difficult balance between the sometimes competing demands at the local, state, and federal levels. Efforts to improve accountability and teacher evaluation have taken an especially unique route in Iowa, where local control and resistance to state mandated curricular standards have been popular topics from the statehouse to the convenience store. This research explores principals’ impressions of Iowa’s state-mandated standards for best-practice teaching (as opposed to state mandated curricular standards).
