Teaching standards and teacher evaluation

This document contains the review of literature, which maps recent and current developments in relation to standards for school leadership, professional learning and purposes for standards, such as professional development and certification, in Australia and overseas. It also provides a brief review of contemporary theory and research on leadership relevant to leadership standards. There is widespread concern about the recruitment, preparation, continuing professional development and recognition of school leaders. Leadership standards are a central component of most proposals for addressing these concerns.

Factors Contributing To Career Success: Perceptions From African American Male School Administrators, Oliver Wilson

In this qualitative study, interviews were conducted with seven Black male school administrators in the Michigan school district who held the position of assistant principal or principal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of Black male school administrators in Michigan school districts. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. Using a phenomenological approach the participant responses were codified, grouped, and analyzed for emergent themes. Five themes emerged as a result of the data analysis: (1) Colleague support is a key mechanism in the success of Black male school administrators. (2) Parental involvement is important in the success …

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Previous research has shown that there are not distinct career lines leading to the chief academic officer (CAO) position in community colleges. Rather, it appears that a variety of skills and experiences contribute to advancement to this position. This paper examines the perceptions of women CAOs as to the importance of professional development activities to their career advancement. Responses from women community college CAOs from nine states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming) indicate that current position holders perceive that a number of professional development experiences were important to their advancement to the CAO position.

The book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, discussed the challenges women still face as they transition to leadership positions. According to the authors, "with their numbers exceeding 50%, women are well represented in the middle ranks of management and the professions, yet, today they hold less than I % of the top leadership positions" (p. 2). The lack of women in these positions is attributed in part to research demonstrating that women lack "the presumption of credibility and competence when she takes on a leadership role" (p. 3). It is a revealing portrait of the friendships that have endured in their lives. Families, careers, distance and years have not weakened the bonds of friendship for these five friends. Their commitment to each other in a time of great challenge is memorable and worthy of attention. They remind us how we have lived our friendships.

My professional career has varied in leadership experiences. Unlike women who are coming of age today in leadership positions, I never had a "plan" for my professional career moves. I simply went about selecting the next interesting opportunity. Looking back, this may not have always been in my best interest, but I certainly had a full life of experiences because of this serendipitous approach. Here are some ideas I learned along the way. In some cases, they were great discoveries. However, in most cases, they were painful-at-the-time mistakes that turned into life lessons.
